Francisco Rivera recovers, slugs way past Edwin Figueroa

Francisco Rivera was hurt in the first round, and he knew it. Truth told, he said he was hurting in the second round, as well.

But he recovered, and he did so in a big way, backing Edwin Figueroa to the cage and landing at will until he finally got a TKO stoppage deep into the second round to stay unbeaten in his past five fights.

The bantamweight bout opened up the preliminary card of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and a main card on pay-per-view.

Figueroa came forward early in the fight with a pair of kicks and a quick flurry, but Rivera hung in the pocket, staying relaxed. He looked for leg kicks of his own, but then Figueroa landed and hurt him.

As the two stood in tight with each other, Figueroa landed a flurry, then a big left hand that dropped Rivera. He quickly followed him to the ground and landed a few punches there, but Rivera survived and got back to his feet for more brawling.

Rivera landed a good kick to the body, but Figueroa landed a left hand. Rivera then dragged the fight to the ground and looked to pound as Figueroa fell into guard. He couldn't keep it there for long as Rivera pulled off an easy pass. But Figueroa got back to his feet – just in time for a high kick for Rivera landed, and he dragged the fight to the floor again.

After a close first round, Figueroa caught a Rivera kick in the second and used it to knock him backward and onto his back. Rivera looked for a triangle, but it wasn't there and Figueroa went to work from the top. Rivera tried to wall-walk, and eventually he was able to get back with half the round left. Figueroa, landed, and the two then began winging punches.

Rivera landed a right, and Figueroa would answer back. But Rivera pinned him against the fence and began landing at will. Rivera landed more than a dozen big punches on the fence, and Figueroa was on roller skates backing away. Rivera chased him down, throwing all the while – and landing against a backpedaling and hurt Figueroa. Kim Winslow finally stepped in to stop it.

"He caught me, and I remember waking up on my back, so I had to recover and get back to where I started," Rivera said of the first-round knockdown. "I was definitely down in that first round, so I knew I had to come back very strong and make up for lost time. After my first stint in the UFC, I was planning on retiring – but my family encouraged me to continue and supported me all the way. I'm very thankful they did."

"When I dropped him in the first round, I just took my time because I didn't think that I hit him very hard," Figueroa said. "I didn't go crazy on him, and that was probably a mistake. Everything was pretty blurry, and when he started throwing combinations it was hard to see the second and third shots coming. I guess he caught me."

Rivera (9-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) won for the fourth time in his past five fights. A win over Roland Delorme at UFC 149 this past July had been overturned when Rivera failed a drug test. Figueroa (9-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) had a two-fight win streak snapped and heads to the loss column for the first time since his UFC debut nearly two years ago.

Dustin Kimura taps Chico Camus in promotional debut

Sure, it wasn't the type of finish we all secretly wanted, but if you're going to go the mat with Dustin Kimura, prepare to fend off a smorgasbord of submissions.

The high-energy promotional newcomer fired off multiple submission attempts before finally tapping out fellow bantamweight Chico Camus with a third-round rear-naked choke.

The bout was part of the preliminary card of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and a main card on pay-per-view.

Kimura, who's never actually tapped out a fighter with a kimura, instead attempted nearly everything else. After he was dropped with a straight right in the first minute of the fight, he regrouped and looked sharp. Camus scored multiple takedowns throughout the fight, but Kimura was active off his back, swept his opponent and often took a dominant top position once on the canvas.

The end of the second round cut short his triangle choke and armbar attempts, but Kimura got his opening in the third round. When the Duke Roufus-trained Camus shot for a single-leg takedown, Kimura reversed it on the way down, took back mount, and then quickly secured a rear-naked choke.

The tap-out came at the 1:50 mark of the round.

"I was looking for a lot of submission, but he has really good defense," the 23-year-old Hawaiian said. "The whole game plan was to take down such a great striker from such a great striking school."

Kimura (10-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who said he was in disbelief when broadcaster Joe Rogan interviewed him post fight, now has nine stoppages in 10 career wins, including seven via submission. Camus (12-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC), meanwhile, snaps a four-fight win streak, which included a UFC-debut win over Dustin Pague in August.

Isaac Vallie-Flagg wins split decision vs. Yves Edwards

The hits just keep on coming for Isaac Vallie Flagg.

The lightweight, making his UFC debut after crossing over from Strikeforce, extended his unbeaten streak to 12 fights over the past five and a half years and upset Yves Edwards with a split-decision victory.

The lightweight bout was part of the preliminary card of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on FX after additional prelims on Facebook and prior to a main card on pay-per-view.

Vallie-Flagg threw big early and landed a body kick, but Edwards countered with an uppercut. Edwards came with a high kick and nearly landed it But Vallie-Flagg wasn't afraid to throw, and he had a good right hand, then a knee in the clinch. But when they finally broke, Edwards landed a high kick, and then got a good trip takedown. After the fight moved back to the feet, as they got in close again, Vallie-Flagg held Edwards' head in place and looked to get an uppercut through. He landed a right hand on the button, then tried a Superman punch. Edwards tagged him with a kick to the body, and as he tried to turn it to a single-leg takedown, Edwards landed a flying knee.

Vallie-Flagg pushed forward in the second, and the two tied up against the cage. Vallie-Flagg just missed a spinning back fist on the break, but his punches to the body were there. Edwards landed a flurry after a jab, but Vallie-Flagg continued to come forward, which was the theme of the fight

Edwards then went after a single-leg takedown, and though Vallie-Flagg defended for a moment, he managed to trip Vallie-Flagg to the ground. From there, Edwards transitioned nicely to side control as Vallie-Flagg held on with two minutes left. Edwards then got to full mount, and as Vallie-Flagg looked to escape, Edwards took his back and went after the rear-naked choke. Vallie-Flagg was able to survive the round, though.

A push kick from Vallie-Flagg opened the third, and he pushed forward – following his corner's instructions. Edwards ducked nicely away from a pair of uppercuts. He then landed a good knee. Although Vallie-Flagg kept pushing forward, Edwards looked the fresher man midway through the third – until he couldn't land a takedown. After he let off the attempt, Vallie-Flagg landed a body shot and a right hand, and he started to look for some momentum to close out the round. With a minute left, Edwards tried to mount some bigger offense late. But Vallie-Flagg kept going after the finish, coming forward with his standup attack.

Two of the three judges scored the fight 29-28 in his favor. A third saw the fight 29-28 for Edwards.

Vallie-Flagg (14-3-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) continued his impressive run and extended his unbeaten streak to 12 fights. He hasn't lost in five and a half years. Edwards (42-19-1 UFC, 10-7 UFC) now has alternated wins and losses for six fights. He falls back into the loss column after a first-round knockout of Jeremy Stephens in December.

Bobby Green gets gutsy tap-out win over Jacob Volkmann

Guts and guile and a whole lot of resiliency carried Bobby Green to a remarkable comeback win over fellow lightweight Jacob Volkmann.

Green, an import from the recently shuttered Strikeforce promotion, survived Volkmann's takedowns and smothering top game – as well as a terrible referee gaffe – before securing a third-round submission victory.

The bout was part of the preliminary card of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on FX after additional prelims on Facebook and prior to the pay-per-view main card.

As expected, former NCAA Division I wrestler Volkmann attacked with takedowns from all angles. The ground specialist rode Green for much of the first round and threatened with a rear-naked choke late in a dominant first round.

Green, though, got things going in the second round and scored a takedown of his own. He then unloaded some vicious elbows from the top that bloodied Volkmann's face and ear. However, almost at the peak of Green's attack, referee Kim Winslow called for a head-scratching standup that saved Volkmann from the attack and got him out of the round.

In the third, Green again got a takedown, but a tiring Volkmann popped back up, caught a kick and took the fight back to the mat. Green, though, was still fresh, and he quickly swept his opponent, moved to mount, and then rained down some heavy ground and pound. Volkmann began gushing blood, and once he turned over, Green secured a body lock and forced the tap-out with a rear-naked choke.

It came with just 35 seconds left in the fight.

It was a memorable UFC debut for Green (20-5 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who's now won five straight fights, including his final four in Strikeforce.

Volkmann (15-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC), meanwhile, has now dropped two of three since a five-fight win streak that had moved him into title contention.

Tyron Woodley delivers brutal KO against Jay Hieron

If Tyron Woodley was looking to make a statement on behalf of Strikeforce, consider it made.

If he was looking to rebound after a rough knockout loss his most recent time out, consider it done.

Woodley wasted no time and delivered a brutal 36-second knockout of Jay Hieron, knocking the veteran down and pouncing before leaving him out cold on the canvas.

The welterweight bout was part of the preliminary card of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on FX after additional prelims on Facebook and prior to a main card on pay-per-view.

Woodley came forward quickly and landed a right hand right to Hieron's left ear that dropped him. He gave Hieron no time to recover.

Woodley pounced on him, landing several big shots on the ground from Woodley's back. As Hieron rolled over onto his back, Woodley landed four strikes – the fourth of which was nothing short of massive.

Referee Herb Dean stopped it as Hieron went stiff on his back, his legs shaking from the knockout.

It was the third straight win on the card for fighters crossing over from Strikeforce and making their UFC debuts.

"It feels amazing," Woodley said. "I'm declaring war on the welterweight division. I want to make a statement in the UFC for my family and the people who support me. I'm glad I finished by knockout. This year is mine."

Woodley (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is back in the win column after suffering a fourth-round knockout loss to Nate Marquardt this past July in a Strikeforce welterweight title fight. That setback was the first loss of his pro career. Hieron (23-7 MMA, 0-4 UFC), a highly prized signing in 2012, now has dropped two straight since his return to the UFC. The recent Bellator title challenger lost his return by unanimous decision to Jake Ellenberger in October.

Evan Dunham edges Gleison Tibau in grueling affair

It wasn't pretty, and it's unlikely to occupy much space on his highlight reel, but Evan Dunham outlasted fellow lightweight Gleison Tibau and picked up a split-decision victory.

Dunham simply soldiered through fatigue and finished strong to win over two of the night's three judges.

The lightweight bout closed out the preliminary card of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on FX after additional prelims on Facebook and prior to the pay-per-view main card.

The fighters traded heavy blows early, and each connected with some powerful shots. Tibau eventually used some strikes to set up a takedown, but Dunham escaped, and they closed out the round in the clinch.

As the second round kicked off, Tibau was already showing signs of fatigue. But even with a takedown, Dunham couldn't really capitalize during.

In the final frame, Tibau scored a quick takedown and worked for a pair of guillotine chokes. Dunham, though, returned to his feet, and his striking started to take over. Quick jabs were landing flush, his takedown defense proved solid, and his footwork gave him openings. As the fight closed out, Dunham unloaded a trio of lunging knees, each landing cleaner than the previous one.

The final sequence likely is what netted him the split decision, which came via 29-28, 28-29 and 29-29 scores.

"Whenever I don't finish a fight, the decision is up in the air," Dunham said. "Unless I get the knockout or submission, I'm nervous no matter how far ahead I think I am.

"Gleison was very strong. It took me a few shots before I woke up and really started getting into a rhythm out there. He's a very muscled guy and it takes a lot to feed those muscles. Going into the third I think he tired a lot and I was pretty sure I had him. I haven't met many guys who can hang with me in the third round."

Dunham (14-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), who fell out of title contention with back-to-back losses to Sean Sherk in Melvin Guillard in 2011, has won three of four since then.

Tibau (26-9 MMA, 11-7 UFC), meanwhile, has dropped two of three since a 5-1 streak that had him flirting with contention in 2011.

Joseph Benavidez gets past Ian McCall with unanimous nod

About four months after fighting for the flyweight title, Joseph Benavidez may be right there knocking on the door again.

Benavidez won a hard-fought unanimous decision against Ian McCall on Saturday, and the win keeps him in the upper echelon of the UFC's 125-pound division.

The flyweight bout opened up the main card of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view after prelims on FX and Facebook.

The two traded leg kicks early until Benavidez moved inside. McCall looked for a takedown along the fence, and Benavidez defended, then came back with an elbow as they broke apart. They traded kicks, but it was Benavidez coming forward and keeping McCall on the outside. He landed a left that clipped McCall, and he followed it with a right hand that had McCall backing up.

After a low blow, Benavidez landed another big right, then ducked under to land a left hook. Benavidez landed again, then again, and McCall told him to come forward. McCall caught a Benavidez kick and landed a jab. McCall landed a shot to the body, but it was Benavidez landing the bigger punches. A clash of heads left Benavidez cut, but it was a cut that never would appear to be a factor in the fight.

The two traded punches and kicks throughout the second round, with neither one gaining a clear advantage. But when Benavidez ducked under a McCall punch, he wound up in trouble. McCall took Benavidez's back and landed some hammerfists. Benavidez then had to defend against McCall going after a choke. He was able to get back to his feet, but McCall stole the round away.

In the third, Benavidez went for the kill early. He landed a big right hand that had McCall hurt and on the fence, and after a scramble he landed an elbow. Benavidez landed a kick to but McCall on his backside, and then landed a good shot as they clinched up. McCall landed a beautiful takedown after ducking under a Benavidez punch, but Benavidez scrambled nicely out of it to get back to his feet. Benavidez landed some good strikes with 90 seconds left with the round perhaps still hanging in the balance. A body kick from Benavidez was on target, and after that McCall had a takedown attempt stuffed.

The judges scored the fight 29-28 on all three cards for Benavidez, who now may become the next top contender for flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson, who defended his belt this past week in Chicago.

"I knew he was a tough guy," Benavidez said. "He's got a big head that was meant to take a shot. Finishing a guy in the first doesn't necessarily teach you a lot. You learn way more going the distance with a guy like Ian McCall. My corners didn't sugarcoat it. They told me very clearly that I had to get the third round. It was 1-to-1 going into the final five minutes, and I had to go out there and take it. You always want a title shot because that's what we're all working for. I had an impressive win over a top guy, but I want to continue to grow and be ready when the time comes to take that shot again."

Benavidez (17-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) gets back in the win column after his loss to champion Johnson in the inaugural UFC flyweight title fight this past September in Toronto. McCall (11-4-1 MMA, 0-2-1 UFC) again fell short of his first UFC win after a draw and unanimous decision loss to Johnson in 2012.

Demian Maia shuts down Jon Fitch for decision sweep

Demian Maia did to Jon Fitch what Fitch has done to so many of his past opponents: He simply shut him down.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace easily handled the college wrestler and simply shut him down on the mat to cruise to a lopsided unanimous-decision victory.

The welterweight bout was part of the main card of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

In a clash of styles, Maia's submission game was no match for Fitch's usually solid jiu-jitsu defense.

In the first round, Maia took his opponent's back and never let go. After an early takedown, he took Fitch's back, secured a body lock and clung to him while trying to secure a rear-naked choke. Fitch carried the weight of the Brazilian for three minutes before Maia finally returned to his feet, dragged him back to the mat, and closed out the round with knees to the legs, as well as punches to the head and body.

The second round didn't start any bette for Fitch. Maia scored a quick single-leg takedown, moved to his back, secured the body lock and ultimately torqued a rear-naked choke. Fitch, though, fought it off for the better part of three minutes to survive the round.

In a desperate situation entering the third round, Fitch immediately threw a head kick. Maia, though, secured the leg and again forced the fight to the mat. Although Fitch reversed the position and looked for a guillotine, Maia quickly escaped and ultimately returned to a familiar position of clinging to his opponent's back while looking for a rear-naked choke.

Maia never got it, but he produced a no-doubter on the scorecards and ultimately took the unanimous decision via 30-27 scores across the board.

Maia (18-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC), a former middleweight title challenger, moves to 3-0 since his move down to welterweight.

Meanwhile, Fitch (24-5-1 MMA, 14-3-1 UFC), who went 21-2 from 2003 to 2010, is just 1-2-1 since then.

Antonio Silva scores devastating KO of Alistair Overeem

It wasn't quite the knock-down, drag-out affair many people were expecting. Until suddenly, it was.

After two rounds of Alistair Overeem controlling the fight with his striking, Antonio Silva ran straight to the middle of the cage in the third. And very soon after, he began landing bombs. And he landed and landed until Overeem was unconscious on the floor.

It was a right hand, followed by combination after combination. And when he finally was done, Herb Dean pulled Silva off – and had to keep pulling him as he yelled down at Overeem on the floor. The end came just 25 seconds into the third.

Silva worked a leg kick early, but Overeem tried to back him up. He got inside for a left hook to the body, and he tied Silva up and started to work on knees to the body. Silva broke apart, but that would be the theme of the first 10 minutes – Overeem mostly controlling the pace of things and landing strikes that while never enough to put Silva in danger, were wearing on them.

In the second, Silva again landed a leg kick, but Overeem landed a good left jab on the counter. After a short flurry, the two tied up and Overeem was able to land on top after a thudding takedown. Silva worked from the bottom to land elbows, but it was Overeem trying to punch to the body from on top in Silva's guard.

Silva kicked to Overeem's knees when he stood up, but Overeem was soon back on the ground in Silva's guard looking to wear him down. He landed a big right hand from there. With 30 seconds left, Herb Dean stood them up, and Silva landed his best shots of the fight thus far.

After the horn sounded, Overeem looked at him, grinned and nodded. Little did he likely know what was to come 90 seconds later.

Silva sprinted right to the center to start the third. And after getting Overeem's attention, he began getting some big right hands through. He pushed Overeem to the fence, and with his back there, he landed relentlessly. Overeem was stunned early and unable to get his hands up to defend, possibly out on his feet early on in the barrage. And after a dozen or more blows, Overeem finally crumpled to the canvas.

"After I knocked him out, I was yelling at him, 'Let's go! I want more! Come fight!,'" Silva said. "It really bothered me that he hasn't respected me in interviews leading up to the fight. He talked a lot of trash, and I told him that I'd make him respect me tonight. I’m going to go home and rest with my family for two weeks and then go right back to training. I'm ready for whatever the UFC wants for me next."

I worked a lot of right hands up against the fence. I'm ready for anyone. The UFC's a big show, and now that I'm here, I'm very happy."

The heavyweight bout was part of the main card of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view after prelims on FX and Facebook.

Overeem (36-12 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was in line for a title shot against heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez had he won. Instead, he lost for the first time since September 2007. Silva (18-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) wins for the second straight time after a TKO victory over Travis Browne in October.

Jose Aldo retains title by outstriking Frankie Edgar

Another 25-minute title fight for Frankie Edgar? Who'd have thunk it?

But for the third straight time, he came out on the short end of a decision, this time in a new division, falling to featherweight champion Jose Aldo in an entertaining battle. Aldo won with scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47.

The featherweight title bout was the main event of Saturday's UFC 156 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view after prelims on FX and Facebook.

Edgar threw an early leg kick as the crowd chanted "Frankie! Frankie!" to open the fight. But Aldo kicked back, and then landed a left jab. Aldo landed a pair of rights a couple minutes into the fight that were on the button. Edgar came forward and threw a spinning back kick. But Aldo threw a pair of punishing leg kicks late, an expected part of his game plan.

Edgar stayed active in the striking department in the second, but it was Aldo's relentless leg kicks that kept him in constant trouble. Aldo worked repeatedly at his lead leg, and midway through he knocked him from his feet with a kick. Aldo threw a jumping knee along the cage, and the two had a brief exchange before Edgar tied things up momentarily.

But with another leg kick, Edgar finally caught one – and pushed Aldo to the canvas. But Aldo was able to pop up quickly without sustaining much damage beyond one good punch from Edgar.

Edgar wanted an early takedown in the third, but Aldo defended it and kept the fight on the feet. Edgar stayed surprisingly mobile despite the kicks he had taken. Aldo nearly landed a front kick that grazed Edgar's chin and that could've ended the fight another inch or two forward.

Edgar again went after a takedown in the fourth, midway through. But Aldo again defended it. Edgar landed a few punches in close. But with a mouse forming under Edgar's left eye and his nose bleeding, Aldo had a continued target.

But soon after, Edgar finally came forward to get a takedown, and it was big. Aldo popped back up quickly, but Edgar stayed on him to land a few punches in close.

Down the stretch in the fifth round, Edgar landed some good combos before pushing forward looking for a takedown. But again he couldn't get it. And Aldo landed good counters of his own. With just seconds left in the bout, Aldo jumped backward and pushed off the cage – Anthony Pettis-style – to land a big punch as time ran out.

"It was a great fight and I knew I had to work step by step and round by round to get the victory," Aldo said. "He was trying to take me down, so I stopped it with my kicking."

Edgar said it's back to the drawing board now for him – after some time off.

"It was a close fight, and I keep finding myself in these situations," Edgar said. "It is what it is, so congrats to Jose on a good fight. I (thought I won the third), but it don't matter. Jose's the winner. I'm just going to go home and take some time, that's all."

Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) remained unbeaten in the UFC and defended his title for the sixth time. Edgar (14-4-1 MMA, 9-4-1 UFC) lost for the third straight time – all in title fights. The former lightweight champion lost his title to Benson Henderson nearly a year ago, then lost a five-round rematch in August before making the decision to drop to featherweight.

UFC 156 bonuses: Aldo, Edgar, Silva, Green win $50,000 each

Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar, Antonio Silva and Bobby Green each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday's "UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar" event.

Silva earned the "Knockout of the Night," Green won "Submission of the Night" and Aldo and Edgar picked up "Fight of the Night" honors.

UFC President Dana White announced the winners at the night's post-event news conference, which MMAjunkie attended.

UFC 156 took place at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Silva (18-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) notched an absolutely devastating TKO win over Overeem (36-12 MMA, 1-1 UFC), who was in line for a title shot against heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez had he won. Instead, he lost for the first time since September 2007, and Silva picked up another giant win for his resume. He also beat Fedor Emelianenko while in Strikeforce. Early in the third, Silva backed Overeem to the fence with punches and landed until referee Herb Dean finally had to pull him away – with Overeem crumpled on the canvas.

Green (20-5 MMA, 1-0 UFC) survived some rough moments in his fight against Jacob Volkmann (15-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) – including a standup by referee Kim Winslow that seemed anything but appropriate given Green was on top and landing. But Green turned things around in the third and was able to take Volkmann's back and submit him with a rear-naked choke with just 35 seconds left in the fight.

And in the main event, Aldo and Edgar went five rounds for Aldo's featherweight title. The champion again defended his belt, this time with a unanimous decision win with scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47. Aldo seemed to be the clear winner in the first two rounds, and Edgar came alive in the last two rounds – making the third a potentially fight-swinging round. But just one judge gave the final two frames to Edgar, and none gave him the close third.

Shut out of the bonus picture was Tyron Woodley (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who stopped Jay Hieron (23-7 MMA, 0-4 UFC) just 36 seconds into their preliminary-card fight. His brutal knockout left Hieron stiff and twitching on the canvas, but Silva's major upset of Overeem was deemed the bonus winner.

JDS, Werdum, Cormier, Big Nog, Struve, allemaal serieuze tegenstanders waar Overeem tegen zal moeten presteren.

Klote, maar karma is a bitch indeed. Néver éver underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. En zo was 't ... REALITY CHECK bingo

This is why people in Holland do not like mister Overeem, and why I had to ko his simple soul. As much as even I wanted him to win for the cain fight, he could not back up his arrogant attitude.
Buying a plane ticket back to Holland is not an option, so I hope he is going to brutal ko his next opponnents to put him back on track.

UFC 156 salaries: Evans, Overeem and Aldo earn biggest payouts

Rashad Evans ($300,000), Alistair Overeem ($285,714.29) and Jose Aldo ($240,000) were the top earners at this past weekend's UFC 156 event.

MMAjunkie.com today requested and obtained the list of disclosed paydays from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The total payroll for the event was $1,755,714.29.

UFC 156 took place this past Saturday, Feb. 2, at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The main card, including Aldo's successful title defense over Frankie Edgar, aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

The full list of UFC 156 paydays included:

Jose Aldo: $240,000 (includes $120,000 win bonus)
def. Frankie Edgar: $120,000

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira: $174,000 (includes $67,000 win bonus)
def. Rashad Evans: $300,000

Antonio Silva: $70,000 (includes no win bonus)
def. Alistair Overeem: $285,714.29

Demian Maia: $120,000 (includes $60,000 win bonus)
def. Jon Fitch: $66,000

Joseph Benavidez: $60,000 (includes $30,000 win bonus)
def. Ian McCall: $9,000

Evan Dunham: $46,000 (includes $23,000 win bonus)
def. Gleison Tibau: $33,000

Tyron Woodley: $87,000 (includes $43,500 win bonus)
def. Jay Hieron: $12,000

Bobby Green: $20,000 (includes $10,000 win bonus)
def. Jacob Volkmann: $22,000

Isaac Vallie-Flagg: $20,000 (includes $10,000 win bonus)
def. Yves Edwards: $21,000

Dustin Kimura: $16,000 (includes $8,000 win bonus)
def. Chico Camus: $8,000

Francisco Rivera: $16,000 (includes $8,000 win bonus)
def. Edwin Figueroa: $10,000

Now, the usual disclaimer: The figures do not include deductions for items such as insurance, licenses and taxes. Additionally, the figures do not include money paid by sponsors, which can oftentimes be a substantial portion of a fighter's income. They also do not include any other "locker room" or special discretionary bonuses the UFC oftentimes pays. They also do not include portions of the pay-per-view revenue that some top-level fighters receive.

For example, as previously reported, UFC officials handed out additional $50,000 UFC 156 bonuses to Silva ("KO of the Night"), Green ("Submission of the Night"), and Aldo and Edgar ("Fight of the Night").

In other words, the above figures are simply base salaries reported to the commission and do not reflect entire compensation packages for the event.

All fight-night drug tests come back clean for UFC 156

All 22 fighters who competed at this month's UFC 156 event tested clean for performance-enhancing drugs and recreational drugs/drugs of abuse.

However, the results of a blood test administered to main-card competitor Alistair Overeem won't be available for at least a week.

MMAjunkie today requested and received the drug-testing results from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the Feb. 2 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The main event saw featherweight champ Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) defend his belt with a unanimous decision win over ex-champ Frankie Edgar (14-4-1 MMA, 9-4-1 UFC).

Overeem (36-12 MMA, 1-1 UFC) fought Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (18-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and was knocked out in the third round, which foiled a planned matchup with champ Cain Velasquez.

Overeem passed a drug test administered immediately following the event, but also was required to take a blood test.

While the fighter had no trouble getting a license for UFC 156, he was denied one this past April after failing a pre-fight drug test for UFC 146. During a commission hearing, he said he took a mixture of vitamins from a doctor that unknowingly contained testosterone, which caused his test to come back with elevated levels.
