UFC 163: Aldo vs. Pettis | booked for Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena

Texas, Chicago and Las Vegas' loss will apparently be Rio de Janeiro's gain.

According to Brazilian website Tatame, Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena will play host to August's UFC 163 – an event first reported by MMAjunkie that features featherweight champ Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) defending his title against Anthony Pettis (16-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC).

When the fight was first booked this past month, UFC President Dana White said that sites in Texas, Chicago, Las Vegas and Rio de Janeiro were all under consideration to host the event.

UFC executives have yet to make an official announcement regarding the fight card's location, and multiple sources close to the event told MMAjunkie.com that contracts have not yet been finalized. Still, it appears Rio de Janeiro is the leading candidate to host the card. If finalized, UFC 163 would mark the promotion's fourth trip to the city in the past two years.

The bout marks Pettis' first fight at 145 pounds, as he drops down from lightweight for the promise of an immediate title shot.

The 26-year-old Pettis is best known for his December 2010 win over current UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson in the final event for the now-shuttered World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. In that bout, "Showtime" clinched a decision win by leaping off the cage wall and knocking down his opponent with a flying kick to the face. After dropping a decision to Clay Guida in his UFC debut, Pettis has since put together a three-fight win streak that includes back-to-back "Knockout of the Night" wins over top contenders Joe Lauzon and Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone.

Meanwhile, Brazilian striker Aldo boasts a 15-fight win streak and has not tasted defeat since 2005. He's earned 11 career first-round stoppages and possesses some of the sharpest and most devastating muay Thai skills in the sport. Still, tae kwon do black belt Pettis believes he's capable of upsetting the 26-year-old champ.

Should the location be made official, Aldo will have pulled headlining duties in two of the UFC's trips to Rio de Janeiro, with Anderson Silva handling that role in the other two events.

Demian Maia vs. Josh Koscheck targeted for UFC 163 in August

A welterweight fight is about to be added to UFC 163.

Demian Maia vs. Josh Koschech is slated to take place on the Aug. 3 card, MMAFighting.com confirmed with sources close to the fight after Brazilian Web site News MMA first reported it earlier this week. The UFC has yet to officially announced the 170-pound fight.

Maia (18-4) is coming off a dominant unanimous decision win over Jon Fitch at UFC 156 in February. That win improved his record as a welterweight to 3-0.

Koscheck (17-7) has lost his last two fights in a row. He most recently lost via first-round TKO to Robbie Lawler at UFC 157 in February,

UFC 163 will be headlined by Jose Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis for the UFC featherweight title. The event will take place in Brazil, and while some outlets have reported it will be held in Rio de Janeiro, that has yet to be made official by the organization, as well.

Officials confirm UFC 163 for Rio de Janeiro with Jose Aldo-Anthony Pettis main

The UFC next returns to Brazil next month for UFC on FUEL TV 10. But in August, a return to Rio de Janerio has been confirmed.

The UFC 163 pay-per-view, as expected, will take place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena. The card will be headlined by a featherweight title fight between champ Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and Anthony Pettis (16-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), who drops down from lightweight, where he was the top contender.

In addition, a welterweight bout between Demian Maia (18-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) and Josh Koscheck (17-7 MMA, 15-7 UFC) also is official for the card.

UFC officials made the announcement at the post-event news conference for UFC on FX 8, which mmajunkie attended. UFC on FX 8 took place at Arena Jaragua in Jaragua do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Though HSBC Arena has long been expected to host the event in Rio, as previously reported, final contracts had not yet been finalized. But that hurdle has been cleared, paving the way for the UFC's fourth trip to the city in the past two years.

Aldo will come into the fight on a 15-bout win streak. He hasn't lost since 2005. In February, he beat former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar by unanimous decision in his first fight in more than a year.

Pettis beat Donald Cerrone in January and was named the top contender for Benson Henderson's lightweight title, riding a three-fight win streak. But he asked for a chance to move down and challenge Aldo and received it.

Koscheck has lost back-toback fights for the first time in his career. He dropped a split decision to Johny Hendricks at UFC on FOX 3, then was knocked out by Robbie Lawler this past February at UFC 157. He'll fight in Brazil for the first time.

Maia has won three straight since dropping down to welterweight, including a dominant performance over former title challenger Jon Fitch at UFC 156 in February.

Sergio Moraes vs. Neil Magny joins UFC 163 lineup

A welterweight bout between Sergio Moraes (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Neil Magny (8-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is the latest addition to August's UFC 163 lineup.

Globo first reported the bout, though UFC officials haven't made a formal announcement.

UFC 163 takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Moraes vs. Magny likely will be part of the prelims.

Moraes, a semifinalist on "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil," fights for the first time since October, when he submitted fellow Brazilian Renee Forte at UFC 153. Prior to that, he made his official UFC debut and suffered a decision loss to Cezar Ferreira. The world champion grappler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, who's been on the mend following a knee injury in his most recent bout, now fights in his home country for the third time under the UFC banner.

Magny, meanwhile, looks to build off his UFC-debut win over Jon Manley at UFC 157 earlier this year. The "TUF 16" semifinalist and Torres MMA fighter, who defeated the likes of Bristol Marunde and Cameron Diffley on the reality show, fights outside of the U.S. for the first time in his career.

Jose Aldo has been in Amsterdam training with the former K-1 MAX champion Andy Souwer.

On August 3, Aldo will defend his featherweight title against top contender Anthony Pettis in the main event of UFC 163 in front of a Rio de Janeiro crowd.

It isn’t the first time that Aldo has trained with Souwer. He explains that the trips take him out of his comfort zone and have given him some new moves for his upcoming title defence.

“Andy Souwer is a great friend and a spectacular fighter. He always helped me a lot and I’m very happy to always count on this training in Netherlands. It was very useful the first time and now it was again.

“I’m sure I’ll show moves that Pettis doesn’t expect to see and I’ll keep this belt for Brazilian fans and my friends.

“Pettis is a big challenge, but I’ll be more than ready to face him. I’ll only be able to defend my belt if I train a lot, if I always seek to improve myself.

“And these trips are great because apart from training, I can develop the psychological part by being in a different country alone, focused only on training. There are new cultures and training and it only brings good things.

“I [have now returned to] train in Nova Uniao to fight, because it’s my home and where the best training in the world for light fighters reside.”

Hester vs. Ferreira added to UFC 163 in Brazil, Magalhaes vs. Perosh official

A middleweight matchup between "The Ultimate Fighter 17" contestant Clint Hester (8-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil" winner Cezar Ferreira (5-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is official for UFC 163.

UFC officials recently announced the matchup.

Additionally, a previously reported light-heavyweight contest of Vinny Magalhaes (10-6 MMA, 1-3 UFC) and Anthony Perosh (13-7 MMA, 3-2 UFC) was also made official for the card.

Featuring a featherweight title fight between current champ Jose Aldo and challenger Anthony Pettis, UFC 163 takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Hester was Jon Jones' first pick on "TUF 17," though he was ousted in the opening round of the tournament when he was submitted by Jimmy Quinlan. Still, he was given a slot on the finale card, and he made the most of the opportunity by scoring a knockout win over Bristol Marunde. Hester now boasts an official four-fight win streak.

Ferriera claimed the "TUF: Brazil" tournament title with a convincing win over Sergio Moraes at this past June's UFC 147 event. He was expected to return to action at May's UFC on FX 8 event but was forced to withdraw due to injury. He'll now face a 14-month layoff between fights.

Magalhaes, who fights in his home country, was a runner-up on "The Ultimate Fighter 8" who lost his first two UFC fights, but he eventually fought his way back to the organization. At UFC 152, the 28-year-old submitted Igor Pokrajac for his sixth straight win. However, in his most recent outing, the former M-1 champ and Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist suffered a decision loss to wrestling standout Phil Davis at UFC 159.

He looks to get back on track against Perosh, a 41-year-old who had won three straight UFC fights in 2011 and 2012. However, he returned from a 16-month injury layoff this past July and suffered a seven-second knockout loss to Ryan Jimmo. The Australian has been nursing a toe injury since then and now fights for the first time in 2013.

Phil Davis vs. Lyoto Machida reportedly targeted for UFC 163 in Rioby MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jun 03, 2013 at 4:10 pm ET
http://www.mmajunkie.com/files/thumb/59599/0Light heavyweight Phil Davis (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/phil-davis) (11-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) could get a chance to cut back in line for No. 1 contender if he gets past his next challenge.

According to a report from Brazilian website Porto do Vale Tudo (http://portaldovaletudo.uol.com.br/br/noticias/item/4848-lyoto-machida-encara-phil-davis-no-ufc-rio-4), the 28-year-old fighter is set to meet ex-champ Lyoto Machida (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/lyoto-machida) (19-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) at UFC 163, which takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

The fight delays an anticipated title shot for Machida, who most recently defeated Dan Henderson (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/dan-henderson) via decision at UFC 157.

After turning down a fight with Jon Jones (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/jon-jones) at UFC 152 due to a lack of preparation time, "The Dragon" has found himself on the backburner for a rematch with the champ, who rendered him unconscious via guillotine at UFC 140.

Machida has since set his sights on staying active rather than campaigning for the belt. Recently, he was targeted by Alexander Gustafsson (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/alexander-gustafsson), but Jones recently quashed that idea by requesting a bout with Gustafsson.

Since losing the belt in a rematch with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 113, Machida is 3-2 against top-fight competition. He won the No. 1 contender position with a KO of Ryan Bader (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/ryan-bader) at UFC on FOX 4, only to lose it upon turning Jones down and later win it back with a decision over Henderson.

Machida won the title at UFC 98 with a knockout of Rashad Evans (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/rashad-evans).

Davis takes a steep step up in competition following a recent decision over Vinny Magalhaes (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/vinny-magalhaes) at UFC 159. The former NCAA champ brushed with title contention early this past year when he fought Evans at UFC on FOX 2. But Evans dominated him over five rounds, and he was forced to go back to the drawing board. A pair of bouts with Wagner Prado (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/wagner-prado) ended in a no-contest (via accidental eyepoke) and a submission win before he met Magalhaes.

With the reported addition to the card, UFC 163 now includes:

Champ Jose Aldo (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/jose-aldo)
vs. Anthony Pettis (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/anthony-pettis)
- for featherweight title
Phil Davis vs. Lyoto Machida
Josh Koscheck (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/josh-koscheck)
vs. Demian Maia (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/demian-maia)

Thales Leites (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/thales-leites) vs. Tom Watson (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/tom-watson)
Vinny Magalhaes vs. Anthony Perosh (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/anthony-perosh)
Cezar Ferreira (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/cezar-ferreira) vs. Clint Hester (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/clint-hester)
Neil Magny (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/neil-magny) vs. Sergio Moraes (http://www.mmajunkie.com/fighters/sergio-moraes)

----------------------------------------------------------

Bristol Marunde vs. Viscardi Andrade joins Rio's UFC 163 fight card

A welterweight bout between Bristol Marunde (12-8 MMA, 0-1 UFC) and promotional newcomer Viscardi Andrade (13-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is the latest addition to August's UFC 163 fight card.

MMAjunkie today confirmed the bout with UFC officials. Globo initially reported it earlier today.

UFC 163 takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Marunde vs. Andrade likely will be part of the prelims.

Marunde, 31, has had a tough go of it under the Zuffa banner. After a 9-1 run with a decision victory over Jay Silva that earned him a Strikeforce contract, he took a late-notice fight and submitted to ex-champ Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in his debut. Then, after a move to the UFC, he suffered a knockout loss to Clint Hester in April.

The native Alaskan looks to end the streak against the Brazilian-born Andrade, who makes his UFC debut on the strength of a six-fight win streak. Recently, the 29-year-old posted a semifinal-round finish on "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2" but wasn't booked for a fight at Saturday's UFC on FUEL TV 10 event, which serves as the show's live finale.

The latest UFC 163 card now includes:

Champ Jose Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis - for featherweight title
Phil Davis vs. Lyoto Machida
Josh Koscheck vs. Demian Maia
Thales Leites vs. Tom Watson
Vinny Magalhaes vs. Anthony Perosh
Cezar Ferreira vs. Clint Hester

Iliarde Santos vs. Ian McCall, John Lineker vs. Phil Harris added to UFC 163 fight card

A pair of flyweight bouts have been added to the UFC 163 fight card as Iliarde Santos will square off against top contender Ian McCall and hard-hitting John Lineker is set to face Phil Harris. The UFC announced the match-ups on Twitter on Saturday.

UFC 163 takes place on August 3rd at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main card, which will air on pay-per-view, is headlined by a featherweight title fight between champion Jose Aldo and challenger Anthony Pettis.

Santos, 32, is 27-7 in professional MMA. He most recently competed at UFC on FX 8, where he dropped a unanimous decision loss to Yuri Alcantara. The bout was his UFC debut. McCall, 28, is 11-4-1 in professional MMA and is 1-4-1 in Zuffa-owned organizations. He most recently competed at UFC 156 in February where he lost by unanimous decision to Joseph Benavidez.

Lineker, 23, holds a 21-6 record in MMA. He is 2-1 inside the UFC's Octagon and most-recently competed at UFC on FX 8 where he stopped Azamat Gashimov by second-round TKO. Harris, 30, is 22-10-1 in MMA and 1-1 in the UFC. He last fought in February at UFC on FUEL TV 7 where he defeated Ulysses Gomez by unanimous decision.

UFC 163 lineup finalized with 13 bouts, including Aldo vs. Pettis title fight

The fight card is set for UFC 163, which marks the UFC's return to Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian champion Jose Aldo's next featherweight title defense, against former lightweight Anthony Pettis.

UFC 163 takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Although the bout order isn't official, the fight card now features 13 fights.

A ticket pre-sale began Tuesday, and they're on sale to the general public today. They range from R$145 to R$1,600 ($68 to $750).

The headliner sees top lightweight contender Pettis (16-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) drop a weight class as he hopes to keep Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) from claiming his 16th straight win and seventh consecutive WEC/UFC title defense. If victories, Aldo will move up to lightweight, and as MMAjunkie recently reported, he's been promised an immediate title shot.

The event also has some firsts. In the co-headliner, Brazilian light heavyweight and former champ Lyoto Machida (19-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) fights for the UFC for the first time in his home country when he takes on fellow contender Phil Davis (11-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC). It's a both with potential title implications.

Additionally, Brazil gets its first women's UFC bout as Brazilian Amanda Nunes (7-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) takes on fellow bantamweight Sheila Gaff (10-5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC).

The full UFC 163 card includes:

Champ Jose Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis - for featherweight title
Phil Davis vs. Lyoto Machida
Josh Koscheck vs. Demian Maia
Cezar Ferreira vs. Clint Hester
Vinny Magalhaes vs. Anthony Perosh

UFC 163 main card adds Leites-Watson, McCall-Santos replaces Clopton-Yahya on FX

A middleweight contest between Thales Leites and Tom Watson has been promoted to main-card status at next month's UFC 163 event.

The promotion came following the loss of a planned Josh Koscheck vs. Demian Maia bout, which was recently removed from the evening's lineup.

Additionally, the night's preliminary bouts have undergone a slight shuffle, as a flyweight matchup of Ian McCall vs. Iliarde Santos was promoted to the evening's FX broadcast in favor of a featherweight contest of Josh Clopton vs. Rany Yahya, which now streams on Facebook.

Featuring a featherweight title fight between current champ Jose Aldo and challenger Chan Sung Jung, UFC 163 takes place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 3. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Leites' most recent octagon appearance came at UFC 101, where he lost a split-decision call to Alessio Sakara. The setback followed the most notable fight of his career, which was unfortunately the most lackluster.

Leites earned a title shot after five straight wins in the middleweight division, and despite critics who said he wasn't of Anderson Silva's caliber, he met the middleweight kingpin at UFC 97. What followed was a frustrating encounter that saw him all but concede defeat against Silva, who at times seemed less than enthusiastic about his work, as well.

Since his UFC release, Leites has earned a 6-1 record on the international circuit and beaten UFC vets Dean Lister, Jesse Taylor, Jeremy Horn and Matt Horwich.

Watson, by contrast, is on his way up in the UFC's middleweight division. The former BAMMA champion got back on the winning track this past February with a second-round TKO over Stanislav Nedkov at UFC on FUEL TV 7. Previously, he lost a decision to Brad Tavares in his octagon debut at UFC on FUEL TV 5.

The British fighter already has grabbed headlines for his challenge of Wanderlei Silva and outspoken views on testosterone replacement therapy.

With the lineup change, UFC 163 now includes:

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET)

Champ Jose Aldo vs. Chan Sung Jung - for featherweight title
Phil Davis vs. Lyoto Machida
Cezar Ferreira vs. Clint Hester
Thales Leites vs. Tom Watson
John Lineker vs. Phil Harris

PRELIMINARY CARD (FX, 8 p.m. ET)

Vinny Magalhaes vs. Anthony Perosh
Sheila Gaff vs. Amanda Nunes
Neil Magny vs. Sergio Moraes
Ian McCall vs. Iliarde Santos
