Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley targeted for June 15 Canada event, likely UFC 161

A welterweight matchup between onetime welterweight title challenger Jake Shields (27-6-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and Tyron Woodley (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is in the works for this summer, sources told MMAjunkie

The fight is being targeted for a yet-unnamed event, likely UFC 161, on June 15 in Canada. A host city is not yet finalized.

Woodley recently called out Shields upon signing a new UFC fight contract, which followed his impressive first-round knockout of Jay Hieron in his promotional debut at UFC 156.

The win put the fighter back on track following a fourth-round KO at the hands of UFC vet Nate Marquardt, who claimed the Strikeforce welterweight title at an event this past July for the now-defunct promotion. It was Woodley's first professional loss in 11 outings.

The former Missouri wrestler earned wins over Andre Galvao, Paul Daley and Jordan Mein in his time with Strikeforce.

Shields, a former Strikeforce middleweight champ, makes his return to welterweight after a decision over 185-pound fighter Ed Herman at UFC 150, which was overturned when he tested positive for a banned substance. The Cesar Gracie-trained fighter was suspended six months and fined for the infraction.

Prior to Herman, Shields earned a unanimous decision over Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 144, which put him back on the right track following back-to-back losses to champ Georges St-Pierre and Jake Ellenberger, respectively.

UFC 161 set for Winnipeg with Nogueira-Rua; Henderson-Evans targeted

The UFC will visit the Canadian province of Manitoba for the first time as Winnipeg's MTS Centre hosts UFC 161 on June 15.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the plans with USA TODAY Sports on Monday.

According to White, a rematch between Brazilian veterans Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (21-7 MMA, 5-5 UFC) and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (21-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) has been booked for the evening's main card, which will air on pay-per-view.

Brazilian website Tatame first reported the possibility of the matchup, though a location for the card was not reported.

Additionally, former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans (17-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) could face ex-PRIDE and Strikeforce titleholder Dan Henderson (29-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC), White said, adding Henderson was awaiting medical clearance.

Winnipeg becomes the fifth Canadian city to host a UFC show.

Evans looks to end a two-fight losing streak after dropping back-to-back decisions to current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Nogueira.

He had flirted with the idea of a potential move down to middleweight in recent months but instead will likely face Henderson, who dropped a close split decision to Lyoto Machida last month at UFC 157.

The bout was the first in 15 months for Henderson, who missed out on a promised title shot with Jones while he recovered from a knee injury in 2012.

Rua and Nogueira, meanwhile, renew a rivalry that began in 2005 when the two faced off in the quarterfinal round of PRIDE's middleweight grand prix.

In a fight that many news media outlets dubbed fight of the year, Rua earned a hard-fought unanimous decision victory. Rua went on to win the star-studded and historic 16-man tournament a few months later.

The two fighters have seen mixed results in recent years. Rua has alternated between wins and losses during his past eight fights, which included a brief UFC title run from 2010-2011 and a December defeat to Alexander Gustafsson. Nogueira, meanwhile, recently halted a two-fight losing skid with back-to-back wins over Tito Ortiz and Evans.

As MMAjunkie previously reported, UFC 161 also is expected to feature a welterweight bout between Jake Shields (27-6-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and Tyron Woodley (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC).

UFC officials will announce additional UFC 161 bouts, as well as a ticket on-sale date, in the coming weeks.

Stipe Miocic meets newly signed Soa Palelei at UFC 161 in June heavyweight tilt

It didn't take long for Soa Palelei to get his first work in his UFC return.

Palelei (18-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC), an Australian heavyweight will meet Stipe Miocic (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at UFC 161 this summer. UFC officials on Tuesday confirmed the new fight booking, citing a report from the Australian website MMA Kanvas.

UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MPS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It will be the UFC's first show in Winnipeg.

Miocic will be looking to rebound from his September loss to Stefan Struve in the main event of UFC on FUEL TV 5 in Nottingham, England. The second-round TKO was the first loss of the Ohio-based fighter's MMA career. Despite the loss, Miocic picked up a "Fight of the Night" bonus for the slugfest, his second UFC bonus in three fights.

He started his career with the promotion 3-0 with wins over Joey Beltran, a "Knockout of the Night" 43-second stoppage of Phil De Fries and a second-round TKO of Shane del Rosario at UFC 146 this past May.

Palelei's management team on Monday announced "The Hulk" had inked a deal with the UFC, where he fought one time in 2007. He has an eight-fight win streak – all TKO stoppages. His lone UFC fight came against Eddie Sanchez at UFC 79, where he dropped a third-round TKO. He didn't return to action for 15 months, but when he did he went on a streak that currently has him 10-1 with the lone loss coming to unbeaten UFC contender Daniel Cormier.

The latest UFC 161 card includes:

Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua
Jake Shields vs. Tyrone Woodley
Stipe Miocic vs. Soa Palelei

Dan Henderson vs. Rashad Evans official for UFC 161; main event still to come

Winnipeg has a major addition to its UFC 161 lineup, but the Canadian city still has a main event on the way.

On Tuesday MMAjunkie reported that the event, which is slated for June 15 at MTS Centre, would get a light heavyweight bout between former champion Rashad Evans (17-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) and Dan Henderson (29-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC), though Henderson needed medical clearance.

UFC officials have since announced Henderson is cleared. Additionally, they announced the fight won't serve as the main event and that as-yet-unannounced headliner is still on the way.

UFC 161, which marks the UFC's debut in Winnipeg and Manitoba, airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Evans, who had won four straight fights after losing his title to Lyoto Machida in 2009, looks to end a two-fight losing streak after dropping back-to-back decisions to current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

The 33-year-old had flirted with the idea of a potential move down to middleweight in recent months but instead will face Henderson, who dropped a close split decision to Lyoto Machida this past month at UFC 157. The loss, which snapped a four-fight win streak and came after a 15-month injury layoff, likely cost the 42-year-old a title shot.

The latest UFC 161 card now includes:

Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua
Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley
Stipe Miocic vs. Soa Palelei

Pat Barry-Shawn Jordan joins UFC 161; Jake Shields-Tyron Woodley official

heavyweight bout between Pat Barry (8-5 MMA, 5-5 UFC) and Shawn Jordan (14-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is the latest addition to the recently announced UFC 161 card.

Officials today announced the bout, confirming a report from winnipegfreepress.com. They also confirmed a bout MMAjunkie first reported: welterweights Jake Shields (27-6-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) vs. Tyron Woodley (11-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC).

UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MPS Centre in Winnipeg and marks the UFC's debut in the Canadian city. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

It's not clear where Barry vs. Jordan and Shields vs. Woodley will be placed on the lineup.

Barry recently avoided a fourth loss in five fights, as well as a potential UFC release, after scoring a "Knockout of the Night" bonus in a win over Shane Del Rosario. It accounted for the veteran kickboxer's seventh knockout in eight career wins, and it followed recent losses to Cheick Kongo, Stefan Struve and Lavar Johnson.

Jordan, meanwhile, recently scored a TKO win over Mike Russow to move to 3-1 over his past four fights. The former Strikeforce and Bellator fighter, who also won a national title with LSU's football team in 2007, scored Zuffa wins over Johnson (submission) and Oli Thompson (TKO) before the Russow victory.

The latest UFC 161 card now includes:

Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland - for interim bantamweight title
Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua
Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley
Patrick Barry vs. Shawn Jordan
Stipe Miocic vs. Soa Palelei

Stout vs. Vallie-Flagg, Pierson vs. Waldburger added to UFC 161 in Winnipeg

A lightweight matchup between Canadian native Sam Stout (19-8-1 MMA, 8-7 UFC) and Strikeforce import Isaac Vallie-Flagg (14-3-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and a welterweight contest between former Toronto polic officer Sean Pierson (13-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and grappling specialist T.J. Waldburger (16-7 MMA, 4-2 UFC) are the latest additions to the recently announced UFC 161 event in Canada.

UFC officials recently revealed the new bookings.

Featuring a championship headliner between UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao and former WEC title holder Eddie Wineland, UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg and is the promotion's first visit to the Manitoba province in Canada.

It's not clear where the new matchups will be placed on the lineup.

Stout wastes little time in booking another fight following a hard-fought split-decision win over another Strikeforce veteran, Caros Fodor, at February's historic UFC 157 event. While "Hands of Stone" has suffered through a few recent setbacks against John Makdessi and Thiago Tavares, Stout is still 4-2 in his past six fights and is a five-time UFC "Fight of the Night" winner.

Meanwhile, two-time Strikeforce vet Vallie-Flagg recently made his UFC debut with a split-decision win of his own, downing longtime veteran Yves Edwards at UFC 156. The result pushed Vallie-Flagg's current unbeaten run to 12 fights – a stretch that includes 11 wins and one draw. Vallie-Flagg, a Jackson's Submission Fighting product, has actually earned his past three wins all by split decision.

After starting his UFC career with a disappointing 1-2 mark, Pierson has since rebounded with back-to-back decision wins over Lance Benoist and Jake Hecht. Pierson was originally expected to fight at this month's UFC 158 event, but an injury forced him to withdraw from a planned matchup with Rick Story. Pierson now hasn't fought since September 2012.

Meanwhile, Waldburger boasts a 3-1 mark in his past four UFC appearances. The lone setback was a disappointing decision loss to Brian Ebersole. However, Waldburger has also picked up a pair of "Submission of the Night" bonuses in that run during tap-out victories over Nick Catone and Mike Stumpf.

With the latest addition to the card, UFC 161 now includes:

Champ Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland - for interim bantamweight title
Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua
Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley
Patrick Barry vs. Shawn Jordan
Stipe Miocic vs. Soa Palelei

John Maguire drops to lightweight, faces Mitch Clarke at UFC 161

British fighter John Maguire (18-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) will make the move to lightweight and take on Canadian 155-pounder Mitch Clarke (9-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) at UFC 161.

The Canadian Press first reported the matchup, and UFC officials later confirmed the booking.

Featuring an interim bantamweight title fight between current champ Renan Barao and top contender Eddie Wineland, UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The evening's main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

The positioning of the Clark vs. Maguire matchup was not revealed but is expected for the evening's preliminary card.

Maguire, who at one time competes as a middleweight, dropped to 170 pounds in 2010 and opened his UFC run with a pair of wins over DaMarques Johnson and Justin Edwards. The win over Johnson even earned Maguire a "Submission of the Night" bonus. However, he's since dropped back-to-back decisions over powerful wrestlers Matt Riddle and John Hathaway and will now make the move to lightweight in an attempt to right the ship.

Meanwhile, "Danger Zone" Clark came to the UFC in 2011 as an undefeated prospect. However, he's since suffer a split-decision loss at the hands of Anton Kuivanen and was handed a TKO defeat by John Cholish.

A third-straight loss for either fighter would likely mean their release from the promotion.

UFC 161 adds Ryan Jimmo vs. Igor Pokrajac to Winnipeg card

A light-heavyweight bout between Ryan Jimmo (17-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Igor Pokrajac (25-9 MMA, 4-4 UFC) is the latest addition to this summer's UFC 161 lineup.

UFC officials today announced the bout, citing an original report from The Canadian Press' Neil Davidson.

UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg and is the promotion's first visit to the Canadian province of Manitoba. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Jimmo vs. Pokrajac likely will be part of the prelims.

Jimmo looks to rebound from his first loss in six years after he suffered a decision defeat to James Te Huna at UFC on FUEL TV 7. Prior to the February bout, the former MFC champion and Canadian fight circuit vet had won 17 consecutive fights, which included a quick stoppage of Anthony Perosh in his UFC debut. The seven-second knockout is tied as the fastest in the promotion's history.

Pokrajac, meanwhile, had posted three consecutive wins (with knockouts of Todd Brown and Krzysztof Soszynski) before his recent two-fight winless streak. The Croatian suffered a submission loss to Vinny Magalhaes in September and then a decision defeat to Joey Beltran in December. However, the Beltran loss was overturned and ruled a no-contest after the fighter failed a post-fight drug test due to an anabolic steroid.

The latest UFC 161 card now includes:

Champ Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland - for interim bantamweight title
Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua
Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley
Sean Pierson vs. Anthony Waldburger
Patrick Barry vs. Shawn Jordan

Roland Delorme meets Edwin Figueroa at UFC 161 in Winnipeg

For the first time in the UFC, Roland Delorme gets a true home fight.

The bantamweight fighting out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has a slot on this summer's card in Canada in his home city. Delorme (8-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) will meet Edwin Figueroa (9-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) at UFC 161. UFC officials announced the fight booking late Wednesday.

UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MPS Centre in Winnipeg with a main card on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. The main event is an interim bantamweight title fight between interim champ Renan Barao and former WEC champion Eddie Wineland.

Delorme will be fighting for the first time in 11 months. He suffered a knockout loss to Francisco Rivera at UFC 149 this past July, but that fight was overturned to a no contest after Rivera failed a post-fight drug test. Delorme, a cast member on Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter," won his first two official UFC fights by submission against Josh Ferguson and Nick Denis, the latter coming with just one second left in the first round at UFC on FOX 3.

Figueroa will be looking to get back in the win column after a February loss to Rivera at UFC 156, where he fell by second-round TKO. Prior to that, he had built up a two-fight streak with wins over Alex Caceres and Jason Reinhardt following a "Fight of the Night" loss in his UFC debut in March 2011.

The latest UFC 161 card now includes:

Champ Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland - for interim bantamweight title
Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson

T.J. Waldburger out, Sean Pierson meets Kenny Robertson at UFC 161

With T.J. Waldburger (16-7 MMA, 4-2 UFC) forced off the card, Sean Pierson (13-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) now will face Kenny Robertson (12-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at next month's UFC 161 event in Canada.

UFC officials on Thursday revealed the new welterweight fight booking. The nature of Waldburger's removal from the card was not announced.

Featuring a headliner between UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao and former WEC title holder Eddie Wineland, UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg and is the promotion's first visit to the Manitoba province.

Pierson-Robertson will be part of the preliminary card on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and a main card on pay-per-view.

Robertson in February picked up the first win of his UFC career with a "Submission of the Night" kneebar victory over Brock Jardine at UFC 157. Prior to that, Robertson had a pair of UFC losses in two separate stints – a 2011 loss to Mike Pierce at UFC 126 and a 2012 loss to Aaron Simpson.

After starting his UFC career 1-2, Pierson has rebounded with back-to-back wins over Lance Benoist and Jake Hecht. Pierson was originally expected to fight at UFC 158 in March, but an injury forced him to withdraw from a planned matchup with Rick Story. He'll be fighting for the first time since September 2012.

Waldburger was looking for his fourth win in five fights, a run that included a pair of "Submission of the Night" bonuses.

With the change to the card, UFC 161 now includes:

Opportunity knocks.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/promotion/ufc) (UFC) featherweight Urijah Faber (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122468/urijah-faber) is fresh off a short notice main event victory over Scott Jorgensen (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/127866/scott-jorgensen) last month (April 13, 2013) at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight-card/121521/the-ultimate-fighter-17-finale), but in light of recent events in the bantamweight division, he'd be willing to do it again if asked.
UFC 161 (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fight-card/126605/ufc-161-barao-vs-wineland) was supposed to be headlined by an interim title fight between Renan Barao (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/129571/renan-barao)and Eddie Wineland (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/122968/eddie-wineland), but a foot injury to the Brazilian champion (http://www.mmamania.com/2013/5/18/4344118/report-interim-ufc-bantamweight-champion-renan-barao-out-of-ufc-161-injury-mma) has left that fight in serious jeopardy.
While no one has reached out to Faber about filling in to fight Wineland in a number one contender bout, he tells MMAmania.com (http://www.mmamania.com/) that he'd definitely be interested:

"I just found out and from what it sounds like, we've got the champ injured and now the interim champ is hurt. This sucks. No one has reached out to me about filling in but if the opportunity comes knocking, I'll definitely consider it."
When informed that UFC 161 would take place in just under a month, the former WEC champion Faber, who's been busy promoting an upcoming MMA art show and his new amateur MMA website MMADraft.com (http://www.mmadraft.com/), warmed up to the idea.

"That would work. I feel like in the rankings I'm number two, it's kinda like waiting to see what happens. If an opportunity comes take it. That's always been my mentality."
If Faber does end up filling in, he'd be competing in a rematch. "The California Kid" defeated Wineland at UFC 128 via unanimous decision in his UFC debut to initially earn a title fight against Dominick Cruz (http://www.sbnation.com/mma/fighter/127865/dominick-cruz). Stay tuned to MMAmania.com (http://www.mmamania.com/)for more details as the Barao injury situation develops.

With Renan Barao hurt, Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson headlines UFC 161

UFC interim champ Renan Barao is injured and out of next month's UFC 161 event. With little time to find a suitable replacement, the night's co-feature between Rashad Evans (17-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) and Dan Henderson (29-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC) has been promoted to headlining status.

UFC officials today made the change. Evans vs. Henderson remains a three-round bout.

UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MTS Centre in the Canadian city of Winnipeg. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Evans, who had won four straight fights after losing his title to Lyoto Machida in 2009, looks to end a two-fight losing streak after dropping back-to-back decisions to current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Antonio Rogerio Nogueir.

Barao looked to defend his interim title for a second time as champion Dominick Cruz recovers from a knee injury. Barao, who's won 30 straight fights (and five straight in the UFC), defended his interim belt for the first in February with a submission win over Michael McDonald.

His original opponent, Eddie Wineland, a former WEC champion, recently fought his way back into title contention with back-to-back wins over veterans Scott Jorgensen and Brad Pickett. Wineland's next move has yet to be announced.

With the loss of the Barao vs. Wineland contest, the UFC 161 main card has room for one more fight. It's currently unknown if UFC officials will secure a new opponent for Wineland or promote another contest from the evening's preliminary card.

Nelson vs. Miocic added to UFC 161, six-fight main card possible

With the loss of UFC 161's planned headliner between Renan Barao (30-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) and Eddie Wineland (20-8-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC), Ultimate Fighting Championship officials looked to add some firepower to the event's lineup. Roy Nelson (19-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC) and Stipe Miocic (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) answered the call.

USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie today confirmed with UFC President Dana White that Nelson and Miocic have agreed to meet on the main card of the event, which takes place June 15 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Rashad Evans (17-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) vs. Dan Henderson (29-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC) now headlines the card.

The planned main event was scratched when Barao suffered torn ligaments in his foot. UFC officials are currently seeking another opponent for Wineland, and if one is secured, the event will feature six fights on the evening's pay-per-view card instead of the traditional five contests.

Nelson, the No. 8-ranked heavyweight in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com Rankings, enters the fight with an impressive three-fight win streak that includes three first-round knockouts over Cheick Kongo, Matt Mitrione and Dave Herman. The win streak is Nelson's longest since 2008 and has "Big Country" knocking on the door of title contention.

Meanwhile, Miocic recently cracked the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com Rankings' top-15 list. The 30-year-old Ohio native opened his career with nine straight wins, including three UFC victories. He fought most recently in the main event of this past September's "UFC on FUEL TV 5: Struve vs. Miocic" event, where he suffered a TKO loss to Stefan Struve.

Miocic had been expected to face Australian heavyweight Soa Palelei (18-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC), who is now left without an opponent. Palelei will now serve as a backup opponent should any injuries disrupt UFC 161's heavyweight bouts of Nelson vs. Miocic or Pat Barry vs. Shawn Jordan.

Isaac Vallie-Flagg reportedly scratches from UFC 161 bout with Sam Stout

A back injury has forced lightweight Isaac Vallie-Flagg (14-3-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) to withdraw from a fight with Sam Stout (20-8-1 MMA, 8-7 UFC) at UFC 161.

Sherdog first reported the scratch. However, as of Thursday evening, the bout was still part of the card on the UFC's official website. MMAjunkie could not reach the fighters' camps for comment.

UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Vallie-Flag vs. Stout was part of the FX-televised preliminary card prior to main-card bouts on pay-per-view.

Strikeforce veteran Vallie-Flagg successfully crossed over to the octagon in February, when he outpointed veteran Yves Edwards by split decision at UFC 156. In the now-defunct Zuffa sister promotion, he went 2-0 with wins over Brian Melancon and Gesias Cavalcante. Vallie-Flagg hasn't lost a fight in six years and has won 11 of his past 12.

Stout most recently fought at UFC 157, where he won a split decision over Strikeforce vet Caros Fodor. The six-time bonus winner has alternated between wins and losses in his past four outings. Still, the Canadian boasts significant wins over standouts such as Matt Wiman, Joe Lauzon and Spencer Fisher.

It's not known if officials will seek a replacement or scratch the fight outright.

The latest UFC 161 card now includes:

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET)

Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua
Stipe Miocic vs. Roy Nelson
Alexis Davis vs. Rosi Sexton

Ivan Raupp, a Brazilian reporter (http://sportv.globo.com/site/combate/noticia/2013/06/chael-sonnen-vai-substituir-rogerio-minotouro-contra-shogun-no-ufc-161.html) that first broke news of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira's recent injury, is saying that Chael Sonnen (http://www.fightline.com/fl/profiles/212/chael-sonnen/) will step in as a replacement. Sonnen made it known on Twitter that he would be willing to face Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 161: Evans Vs. Henderson (http://www.fightline.com/fl/events/2013/247/ufc-161-evans-vs-henderson/) on June 15. The card takes place on pay-per-view from Winnipeg.
Sonnen was defeated by Jon Jones (http://www.fightline.com/fl/profiles/216/jon-jones/) earlier this year in his return to the light heavyweight division. Expect more news to come out no later than Tuesday concerning this rumored bout, as the UFC (http://www.fightline.com/fl/news/ufc-news/) has a conference call planned.

Denk het ook ja... ik denk zelfs dat Sonnen een UD gaat winnen door de hele partij lang boven op Shogun te gaan liggen...

Chael Sonnen vs. Shogun Rua in the works for UFC 161 on June 15 in Winnipeg

UFC officials today confirmed that a light heavyweight fight between Chael Sonnen vs. Mauricio Rua is "being discussed" for UFC 161 on June 15 in Winnipeg.

 SHARE (39)  TWEET (8) 22 COMMENTS
Just a few hours after former middleweight and light heavyweight number one contender Chael Sonnen tweeted that he was ready, willing and able to fight Mauricio Rua on less than two weeks notice, word comes in today from Brazil's Ivan Raupp that Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is considering the 205-pound contest for next week's UFC 161 co-main event.

UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said the bout is not confirmed, but is currently "being discussed."

Sonnen (27-13), who benefits from not having to worry about cutting to 185 pounds, would step in for the injured Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (find out what happened here) to battle "Shogun" on June 15, 2013 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

"The American Gangster" could probably use a win to keep pace with his mouth. He was able to talk the talk in his two most recent fights, but failed to walk the walk, coming up empty in consecutive title challenges against Anderson Silva at UFC 148 and then Jon Jones at UFC 159.

In his defense, those are the two best fighters in the world.

Not that it's been all peaches and cream for Rua (21-7). The Brazilian has been unable to win consecutive fights inside the Octagon since knocking out Chuck Liddell back in 2009, a 4-4 record over that span including a recent unanimous decision defeat to budding contender Alexander Gustafsson last December on FOX.

You can argue that Rua would be at a disadvantage, with only a couple of days to transition his training from striker to wrestler, which may nullify all those boxing lessons he received from Freddie Roach (see them here).

Should be interesting, to say the least.

Stay tuned.

UFC 161 will be headlined by a 205-pound contest between division title contenders as former champion Rashad Evans tries to work his way back into "the mix" at the expense of Dan Henderson, while heavyweight knockout artist Roy Nelson makes a quick turnaround to challenge Stipe Miocic.

Visa issues reportedly scrap Sonnen-Rua at UFC 161, Jimmo-Pokrajac head to main

Chael Sonnen tried to get himself into a fight, but it looks like his effort will go wasted.

Despite reports on Monday that Sonnen (27-13-1 MMA, 6-6 UFC) would fill in for an injured Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (21-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) in the co-main event of UFC 161 later this month against Mauricio Rua (21-7 MMA, 5-5 UFC), that fight won't happen. Instead, UFC 161 will move forward with 11 fights, and "Shogun" will wait to fight another day – perhaps still against Sonnen.

The UFC made the announcement late Monday night that Rua had been removed from the card. But Globo, which first reported that Sonnen and Rua would meet, reported that visa issues created a problem for Sonnen to get into Canada – and that the two are expected to meet on Aug. 17 at UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 in Boston. The UFC has yet to announce the fight is in the works.

But as far as UFC 161 is concerned, with Rua's slot falling off the main card, UFC officials confirmed to MMAjunkie that a preliminary card light heavyweight fight between Ryan Jimmo (17-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Igor Pokrajac (25-9 MMA, 4-4 UFC) will be promoted to the pay-per-view.

UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

After Nogueira fell off the card on Sunday with a back injury, "Shogun" was in need of an opponent. Sonnen tried to ask for the fight on Twitter, and a Monday report from Globo surfaced that his tweet had done the trick.

But instead, Sonnen won't be making a late-notice trip to Canada, and Rua will wait for another card. Whether that proves to be Sonnen later this summer, of course, remains to be seen.

UFC 161 was set to be headlined by a interim bantamweight title fight between Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland. But an injury to Barao forced him out of the headliner, which bumped the co-main event between Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans into the top position.

Now with Rua out of the co-main event spot, a heavyweight bout between Roy Nelson (19-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC) and Stipe Miocic (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) climbs a spot on the card.

With the change to the card, UFC 161 is again finalized:

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET)

Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson
Stipe Miocic vs. Roy Nelson
Alexis Davis vs. Rosi Sexton
Pat Barry vs. Shawn Jordan
Ryan Jimmo vs. Igor Pokrajac

PRELIMINARY CARD (FX, 8 p.m. ET)

Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley
James Krause vs. Sam Stout
Sean Pierson vs. Kenny Robertson
Roland Delorme vs. Edwin Figueroa

PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook, 7 p.m. ET)

Mitch Clarke vs. John Maguire
Yves Jabouin vs. Dustin Pague
