For as long as they can remember, these two younglings have been fighters-in-training. Under the guidance of Martjin De Jong (https://twitter.com/martijndej) (Head Coach of Team Golden Glory), they are now pro MMA fighters moving up the ranks.Without further ado, here is our interview with Egzon and Gzim Selmani.

How long have you been fighting for and was it always MMA or did you get involved in the sport later on in your career?
Egzon: I started with Karate when I was very young, At that age I didn’t liked it that much so i quit training it. After a few years I started training kickboxing, I liked it a lot and did it for six years. After those six years I wanted a little change and MMA was the sport I was looking for. Now i am training MMA for four years and 5 months of training under the professional guidance of Golden Glory’s MMA Head coach Martijn de Jong.
Gzim: My first sport I ever practiced was Judo, I was training Judo from 5-10 years old. At the age of 12 I started practicing Kickboxing and went to the gym were my brother trained. When I turned 14 years old I started MMA and fell in love with it, never stopped since and never will. The last 5 months we are training under the professional guidance of Golden Glory’s MMA Head coach Martijn de Jong.
What about MMA attracted you to the sport?
Egzon: The combination of all the different styles of martial arts. You can’t be the best MMA fighter with only boxing, because you will be out wrestled. You can’t be the best with only grappling or BJJ, because u will get knocked out. That’s the reason what attracted me the most. To be the best in every perspective of the sport.
Gzim: The thing that attracted me the most to the sport of MMA, is that there are two individuals that go out in the cage and try to finish each other. The adrenaline that gets involved in the sport when you step into the ring or cage is just unreal , and that is what I like, I never felt it before at a other sport.
Where would you like to see your MMA career go?
Egzon: I would like to be the best Heavyweight fighter in the world, I would like to see me and my brother on the top of the world. A big dream that comes true, with good training and a good trainer, team and management we can accomplished that, lucky enough we got it all now.
Gzim: I would love to capture all the heavyweight titles, in spectacular way. Brutal knockouts and submissions, that’s my goal, to finish all my fights and win them all. And to give the fans the show they deserved, because without the love from the fans MMA wouldn’t be where it is right now.

Explain to us what goes through your mind on fight night and when you walk into the cage?
Egzon: On fight night i try to be very relaxed but at the same time very focused. The atmosphere is always relaxed, we make jokes and laugh. But when we start hitting the mitts and warm up me and my trainer get very focused and get to work. When i hear my entrance song the adrenaline starts coming up and i only see my opponent. The first step i walk into that cage, that feeling is amazing. That’s the moment u can show how good u are and how hard you have trained for this.
Gzim: At the fight day, I´m relaxed but there is always a sort of anger inside, that I need to get out. I think of all the time I spent training for this fight and how much afford I put in this. One thing is always in my mind ´winners never quit and quitters never win´ so giving up is no option.
What has been your most memorable fight and why?
Egzon: My most memorable fight was the fight against Direnc Daymaz. I won that fight by total domination of two rounds Ground and Pound. When I heard the crowd go crazy when i was punching, I punched harder and harder. I never felt a rush like that.
Gzim: My most memorable fight was the fight against Tolea Ciumac, it was the hardest fight I´ve been in my young career. He was twenty years older and had a lot of experience, he was a former world champion Kempo karate champion. But I liked the challenge and I took the fight. The fight was very exciting for the fans we were both going for the early knockout and we were both going back and forth, after the second round he and his corner decided that he couldn´t continue the fight, so I won by corner stoppage after round two.
Do you have a different game for each opponent or is it the same every time you step in the cage?
Egzon: I am always going in for the kill, off course me and my trainer discus a game plan. For every opponent another game plan and strategy. It depends on what kind of background the fighter has and a lot more other factors. But at the end all i want is the kill.
Gzim: Of course there is for every fight an different game plan, but one thing that is the same in all the fights, is that I want to finish him, and I will.

What is does your weekly training regime consist of?
Egzon: We train 13 times a week, that means on Monday three times, and Tuesday till Friday two times a day, and on Saturday once. That means every day once strength and conditioning and once MMA/BJJ/K1 . In the rest of the day we try to rest as much as possible.

And how does it feel training under the great Martijn de Jong? Or if you want with team Golden Glory who trained many great fighters?
Egzon: Before I joined team Golden Glory I trained at many other places with my brother, like the blackzillians and a lot of other familiar Dutch gyms. And I can tell you that no one teaches like Martijn de Jong and the level of training here is outstanding. When he explains techniques and other things u know that he has a lot of experience and he knows what he is talking about. He knows for everything an solution. I think that’s why they call him ‘ the tatsujin ‘ meaning for ‘ the specialist’.
Gzim: I am really blessed to be a part of the team Golden Glory and to get trained by Martijn de Jong. The level of training here is at the top, you learn so much things, that makes you a great fighter.

Which weight class each of you belong too?
Egzon: I fight in the Heavyweight division. I walk around at 258 pounds / 117 Kg.
Gzim:I Fight also in the Heavyweight division. I walk around 266 pounds/ 121 Kg. But I like to drop some weight before a fight, I lose like 11 pounds/ 5 Kg. I just feel like i am faster at that weight and more explosive.
Do you guys ever fight like all brothers do? I bet that would be disastrous and dangerous. (laughs)
Egzon: I don’t think that would be a good idea, our whole house would be upside down then. (laughs). Fortunately I can kick his ass when we spar with each other. All the irritation we have or something else we have we can use in our training session. But at the end we are brothers so we know when to stop.
Gzim: We never got into real fights, but when we were young our dad bought us a GI for training. So we used to where that and fight for fun. But right now we are both older and bigger so we use each other as great sparring partners, so we can get ourselves better every time.
You both have good records so far. What are your strength and weaknesses?
Egzon: I like the standup game a lot, I practiced kickboxing for almost 10 years so I am not afraid to bang with someone. BJJ is something i like to improve, I learn every day more and more. I won my second fight with a submission after a short period of training with Martijn de Jong. BJJ is something that u never stop learning.
Gzim: My strengths are that I always keep coming forward, I have a good wrestling/ Judo base, but my standup is my best wapon. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t have a ground game, I’m training allot of BJJ with GI an NO-GI. So if I need to submit someone I can but I prefer to keep it standing and bang!

Do you focus more on boxing or grappling? And what do you think is most important?
Egzon: What I like about the way Martijn de Jong teaches us is that we teach every aspect of MMA at once. Like in the fight we start standup, we make the combination and go for the takedown. After that we learn how to finish someone with a submission or ground and pound.
Gzim: Martijn de Jong learns us every aspect of the game, that includes boxing and grappling, we train it all, because you never know where the fight goes, you need to train every aspect so you won’t worry when you’re fighting.
Guys, where do you hope to be in the next 5 years?
Egzon: I would like to fight in a couple of years in big organizations and putting in great performances and fights. I would like to be known as a fighter who is one to watch and someone who puts in exciting fights. I hope to fights in great organizations like the Glory World Series, UFC or Dream, and capture a lot of titles.
Gzim: I want to fight like four to six times a year and stay busy. I hope to be at the top in the next 5 years, and headline the greatest shows in the MMA world. I am sure with the help of Golden Glory team and my Coach it will come true. I hope to stay healthy so I can improve myself and be better each time I fight and win a lot of fights and belts.
Any shout outs?
Egzon: & Gzim: We want to thanks our Family for believing in our dreams and supporting it. Martijn de Jong for believing in us, Golden Glory management for helping us with everything and all the sparring partners at Golden Glory & Tatsujin Dojo, that are helping us to prepare for every fight!
