View Full Version : UFC 165: Alexander Gustafsson vs Jon Jones
The UFC will return to Toronto in September for a pay-per-view that will be UFC 165.
UFC officials on Tuesday made the announcement on FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight."
UFC 165 will take place Sept. 21 at Air Canada Centre. No main event or other fights were announced for the card.
The show will be the UFC's fourth in the Ontario city, which is the largest in Canada. Most recently, UFC 152 took place at Air Canada Centre on Sept. 22, 2012 – so UFC 165 will return there exactly a year later to the weekend.
At UFC 152, light heavyweight champion Jon Jones defended his title with a fourth-round submission of Vitor Belfort. That card drew 16,800 fans for a gate of $1.9 million.
Before that, the UFC's two trips to Toronto were to Air Canada Centre for UFC 140 and Rogers Centre for UFC 129, the promotion's first stadium show, which drew a North American record 55,724 fans and a gate in excess of $12 million.
The UFC was in Canada in March for UFC 158 at Montreal's Bell Centre, where Georges St-Pierre defended his welterweight title against Nick Diaz. Next month, the UFC makes its first trip to Winnipeg for UFC 161, which features an interim bantamweight title fight between Renan Barao and challenger Eddie Wineland.
After UFC 161, the UFC will have held 14 events in Canada, which will pull it ahead of the United Kingdom for second place behind the United States.

Zal tijd worden. De enige die het verdient, maar steeds geen kans krijg. Begrijp de Ufc daarin niet altijd. Sommige mogen met een gewonnen partij voor een 2e keer voor de titel, terwijl ze 1 partij daarvoor nog voor de belt verloren hebben. En sommige moeten wel 6 a 7 partijen winnen

Grapje hoop ik? Als iemand het verdiend is het Henderson wel. Onze zweed heeft van de toppers alleen shogun verslagen. Nu doe je net als de ufc beetje aan de gun factor en wie je zelf graag zou zien.

Kijk er wel naar uit!! In mijn ogen is Gustafsson misschien wel de enige die nog een beetje tegen gas kan geven tegen Jones. Allebei ongeveer even lang word een interessante partij!!

Jones zal gewoon zijn eigen spelletje spelen en gustafsson vaak naar de grond brengen om vervolgens flink schade te maken met zijn ellebogen. De enigste die ik een kleine kans geef tegen jones is cormier als die dropt naar 205.

Ik denk dat ook gustafssen weinig kans maakt helaas. Het wordt pas echt interessant als Jones naar hw gaat. En als spong wat meer ervaring opdoet in mma zie ik hem wel een goede kans maken tegen Jones.

Aangezien ik hier negreps voor krijg van Minotauro met de mededeling: "bash" Spong niet zo man!
Dan ben ik toch wel heel erg benieuwd hoe ik hem hier bash.

Goed argument! Dit is ook de partij die ik wil zien, daar niet van. Maar jij doet net alsof Gustafson al vele malen is overgeslagen maar dat vind ik gewoon onzin. Hoe zouden een Machida of Henderson zich dan moeten voelen toen Sonnen de partij kreeg? Is die overwinning van Gustafson op Shogun nou zou indrukwekkend dat hij direct een titleshot had moeten krijgen? Het is nu een logische partij en ik denk dat iedereen tevreden is dat hij komt.
Als Gustafsson verliest van Davis, Davis van Evans, en Evans van Jones, dan is het toch niet redelijk om Gustafsson de volgende te laten zijn? De enige die het Jones moeilijk maakte en het nog steeds moeilijk kan maken is Lyoto Machida, Gustafsson vs Mousasi vindt ik daarom een betere partij.

Ik wil Gustafsson ook nog eigenlijk een potje zien draaien voor die de titleshot zou moeten krijgen, ik ben ook nog niet helemaal onder de indruk, tegen shogun draaide die inderdaad een goeie partij maar dat is helaas tegenwoordig geen garantie op succes tegen een jones... Maar aan de andere kant heb je wel het probleem wie nu voor jones? en dan kom je uiteindelijk toch bij Gustafsson uit, tenzij Henderson komend weekend Rashad binnen 2 minuten KO mept en okselfris uit de match komt zou ik niet weten tegen wie Jones moet vechten net na de zomer. Ik hoor overigens vaak mensen hebben over het feit dat Gustafsson net zo lang is als Jones en daarom wel kans zou maken, maar dat vind ik kort door de bocht, in elke aspect is Jones beter en behoudt z'n Reach voordeel want ondanks Gustafsson z'n lengte heeft die maar een Reach net als machida,shogun en/of henderson

Is Jones dan zo geweldig op de grond? ik zie vooral dat hij redelijk sterke top control heeft en z'n stoten goed weet te plaatsen, verder niet echt veel technische poespas ofzo. Hij moet het hebben van het moment vlak na de takedown wanneer hij gelijk losgaat, als het op het pure grapple werk aan komt zijn er tig brazillianen die het beter kunnen, zo ook het worstelen. Jones combineert alle spelletjes vooral erg soepel, niet zoals sommige vechters die eigenlijk komen om te BJJ'en of te kickboxen.

Misschien in een BJJ match ja, maar in een mma-partij zijn dat er echt niet zoveel denk ik, en al helemaal niet in zijn divisie. Gustafsson wordt overigens gewoon weer another day in the office.

Ik vind het nog steeds jammer dat de Partij van Gegard tegen Gustafsson niet is doorgegaan. Ik had het gevoel dat Gustafsson een goede match-up was voor Mousasi.
Ik denk ook dat Jones Gustafsson met gemak pakt. Er zijn in de 205 divisie nog zat mooie matches voor Jones.

Er zijn nu ook veel meer events dan toen. Plus een stuk meer vechters. Tel dit bij elkaar op en de cards hebben veel minder grote namen erop. Vooral de europese cards zijn tot nu toe wel erg karig geweest.

A day after the UFC 165 main event was announced, an intriguing lightweight bout has been added to the card.
Undefeated Myles Jury will meet Mike Ricci at UFC 165, which is scheduled to take place Sept. 21 in Toronto, according to sources close to the fight.
Jury (12-0) recently extended his unbeaten streak when he knocked out Ramsey Nijem at UFC on FOX 7 in April. That win improved his record to 3-0 inside the Octagon.
Ricci (8-3), a finalist on the sixteenth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," picked up the first win of his young UFC career in March when he defeated Colin Fletcher via unanimous decision in his hometown of Montreal.UFC 165, headlined by Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson for the UFC light heavyweight title, will take place at the Air Canada Centre.

A bantamweight bout between Ivan Menjivar (25-10 MMA, 4-3 UFC) and Norifumi Yamamoto (18-6 MMA, 0-3 UFC) reportedly is slated for UFC 165.
TVA Sports' Nancy Audet first reported the bout, the UFC officials haven't made a formal announcement.
UFC 165 takes place Sept. 21 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The main card airs on pay-per-view and features a light-heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and challenger Alexander Gustafsson.
Menjivar vs. "Kid" likely will be part of prelims, which air on FX and stream on Facebook.
Menjivar, a Salvadoran-Canadian fighter who sets up camp at Tristar Gym, recently was on a solid 4-1 run in the UFC that included submission wins over John Albert and Azamat Gashimov. However, in his most recent bout, the former WEC fighter suffered a submission loss to Urijah Faber at UFC 157. Despite the defeat, the 31-year-old is ranked No. 15 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com MMA bantamweight rankings.
Yamamoto, meanwhile, is undoubtedly in a must-win situation. The DREAM vet and former K-1 HERO'S tournament winner is winless since joining the UFC in 2011. The 36-year-old has suffered consecutive losses to Demetrious Johnson, Darren Uyenoyama and Vaughan Lee. The Japanese fighter will return from a 19-month layoff at UFC 165.

The UFC's interim bantamweight title fight planned for June is back on again.
Interim champ Renan Barao (30-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will defend the title against Eddie Wineland (20-8-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in September as the co-main event of UFC 165. UFC officials announced the rebooking on Wednesday night.
UFC 165 takes place Sept. 21 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. A light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and top contender Alexander Gustafsson headlines the pay-per-view main card, which makes the show a relatively rare two-title-fight event for the UFC. Prelims air on FOX Sports 1 and stream on Facebook.
Barao and Wineland were scheduled to fight in June's UFC 161 main event in Winnipeg. But in May, Barao suffered a foot injury, forcing him out of the fight.
UFC President Dana White said on several occasions he was unsure just how soon Barao would be able to return – and even told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that if he were Wineland, he would consider taking another fight in the meantime rather than waiting too long for Barao to get healthy. But now that won't have to be the case for Wineland, who was the first bantamweight champion in WEC history prior to that promotion's purchase by UFC parent company Zuffa.
Barao looks to defend the interim title for the second time. Regular champ Dominick Cruz has been sidelined for nearly two years after back-to-back knee surgeries, and a timetable for his return still is uncertain.
Barao won the interim belt against Urijah Faber at UFC 149 nearly a year ago. He then defended it with a fourth-round submission of Michael McDonald in England in February. Barao has won 30 straight fights and is unbeaten in the UFC.
Wineland won the WEC's 135-pound title in 2006 but lost it in his first defense against Chase Beebe. After a couple fights on his local circuit in Northwest Indiana, Wineland returned to the WEC with a loss to Rani Yahya before rattling off four straight wins – with back-to-back "Knockout of the Night" bonuses – before the merger with the UFC.
Wineland's UFC career started on a down note with consecutive losses to Urijah Faber in a top-contender's fight and Faber teammate Joseph Benavidez. But he rebounded by becoming the first fighter to knock out Scott Jorgensen in June 2012, and he then took a split decision from Brad Pickett in December (though that split featured a pair of 30-27 scores for Wineland).

Ik zie Lyoto wel de belt pakken. Sinds dat gevecht met Jones heeft hij zijn grondwerk flink verbeterd. Kijk naar de Lyoto vs Hendo, Hendo had Lyoto op de grond, maar Lyoto had bijna zijn rug.

Dat hoop ik! Ik mag Lyoto zijn stijl wel. Hij praat alleen niet zo veel helaas ;) Jones is een geweldenaar maar in zijn uitingen vind ik hem vaak niet heel oprecht overkomen. Iets te arrogant terwijl hij bescheiden probeert te zijn. Ben dan gewoon volle bak arrogant á la Phil Baroni, daar kan ik van genieten. Maar ik kan het missen hebben ook natuurlijk.
Spong maakt nooit kans tegen Jones? Jullie hebben er weinig verstand van.

Bantamweights Roland Delorme (9-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) and Alex Caceres (8-5 MMA, 3-3 UFC) will meet at next month's UFC 165 event in the show's 13th matchup.

Delorme vs. Caceres is expected to be part of the Facebook stream.
Delorme is technically undefeated over his past four fights, all of which have come in the UFC. It includes submission wins over Josh Ferguson and Nick Denis, as well as a recent decision victory over Edwin Figueroa. However, a no-contest with Francisco Rivera initially was a TKO loss, but the latter failed a post-fight drug test due to an over-the-counter stimulant, and the bout was changed to a no-contest.

Newcomer Jesse Ronson in for injured Mark Bocek vs. Michel Prazeres at UFC 165
With Mark Bocek injured, a fellow Canadian has been signed by the UFC to take his place next month in Toronto.
Bocek (11-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) has been forced out of his UFC 165 fight against Michel Prazeres (16-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC), and Jesse Ronson (13-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will make his promotional debut in Bocek's place.
The London Free Press first reported the news, which was subsequently confirmed by UFC officials.
UFC 165 takes place Sept. 21 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The pay-per-view main card features a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson and an interim bantamweight title fight between Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland. The main card follows prelims on FOX Sports 1 and Facebook.
Ronson has gone more than two years since his most recent loss, which came to current UFC fighter and "TUF" finalist Mike Ricci. Since then, he has won eight straight fights with five by stoppage. In July, he submitted Shane Campbell under the Aggression Fighting Championship banner in Canada. Overall, "The Body Snatcher" has 10 of his 13 wins by stoppage.
Prazeres made his UFC debut in May as an unbeaten fighter. But he dropped a unanimous decision to Paulo Thiago at UFC on FX 8 in his native Brazil for the first loss of his career. He was looking to rebound against Bocek in Bocek's native Canada, but now will make the same attempt against Ronson.
Bocek was looking to rebound himself from a loss in November to Rafael dos Anjos, a unanimous decision that snapped a two-fight win streak. Bocek confirmed his injury on his official Twitter account, saying, "I'm very sorry to report that I have sustained an injury during training and I will not be able to fight at #UFC165. I will be back stronger!"

Inderdaad, ik word hier zo moe van. Denk dat ze het allemaal roepen vanwege de paychecks die die boksers krijgen (klitschko geloof ik 13 miljoen voor zijn volgende gevecht).

Dat zijn leuke bedragen ja. Nog niks vergeleken met mayweather trouwens.
Denk dat het morgen snel gebeurt is met Gustafsson, hij is samen met Machida toch een beetje best of the rest.

Jones kan deze partij beslissen wanneer hij wilt.
Dit wordt een enorm pak slaag voor Gustaffson.
Als gustaffson zich niet tegen de kooi laat vastzetten en de partij in het midden van de kooi houd geef ik hem een kans. Denk en hoop iig niet dat dit een eenzijdig gevecht gaat worden.

Net partij nog een keer bekeken, Gustafsson is zeker bestolen!
Gustafsson deed het heel goed, maar vond Jones aan het einde het toch echt beter.
Toch bizar dat de UFC doctor Jones wilde laten stoppen aan het eind van de 4e en toch door liet vechten. Jones mag echt van geluk spreken.

Waarom de 4e partij stoppen voor een sneetje boven zijn wenkbrauw en een gezwollen boven lip, kom op zeg.
Ben persoonlijk blij dat de ref. en cq dokters de 4e partij door heeft laten gaan.
