Rony Jason vs. Jeremy Stephens targeted for unannounced UFC Fight Night 29 event

A featherweight matchup between Rony Jason (13-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) and Jeremy Stephens (21-9 MMA, 8-8 UFC) has been targeted for as as-yet-unannounced event expected to serve as UFC Fight Night 29.

The bout is expected to take place on Oct. 9 in Brazil, at a city and venue to be determined. The night's main card is expected to air on FOX Sports 1, but official plans have yet to be revealed.

The Jason vs. Stephens contest was first reported by MMAWeekly, and Stephens also took to Facebook to confirm his participation.

"Looks like my first trip to Brazil will be fighting in hostile territory on a UFC main card," Stephens wrote. "Now we just need a certain someone to confirm to lock this up."

Jason, a 29-year-old Brazilian native, was the featherweight winner of the debut season of "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil." He claimed that season's tournament crown with a UFC 147 win over Godofredo Pepey and has since registered two more official wins after earning stoppage victories over Mike Wilkinson and Sam Sicilia.

Meanwhile, Stephens returns to action after a successful featherweight debut in May, scoring a decision win over Estevan Payan at UFC 160. The much-needed result snapped a three-fight losing streak for "Lil' Heathen," who had fallen short against Yves Edwards, Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis.

'UFC Fight Night 29: Maia vs. Shields' official for Oct. 9 in Brazil

The long-rumored UFC Fight Night 29 event is now set for Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The event, which includes a main card on FOX Sports 1 and prelims on Facebook/YouTube, features a previously reported five-round non-title headliner between welterweight contenders Jake Shields (28-6-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and Demian Maia (18-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC).

That bout, as well as seven others, are now official for the card.

Since a move down to welterweight, Maia, a former middleweight title challenger, has won three consecutive bouts. The Brazilian, who made the drop after a decision loss to now-champ Chris Weidman in early 2012, has defeated Dong Hyun Kim (TKO via injury), Rick Story (submission) and Jon Fitch (decision).

Shields, meanwhile, looks to build on a recent split-decision victory over Tyron Woodley in June. If not for a failed drug test (due to an undisclosed substance) at UFC 150, he'd be on a three-fight winning streak. Still, the former Strikeforce champion remains undefeated since back-to-back losses to UFC champ Georges St-Pierre and Jake Ellenberger in 2011.

Other previously reported bouts that are now official include welterweights Erick Silva (15-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) vs. Dong Hyun Kim (17-2-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC) and featherweights Rony Jason (13-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) vs. Jeremy Stephens (21-9 MMA, 8-8 UFC).

New additions include light heavyweights Thiago Silva (15-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) vs. Matt Hamill (11-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC), light heavyweights Fabio Maldonado (19-6 MMA, 2-3 UFC) vs. Joey Beltran (14-8 MMA, 4-5 UFC), bantamweights Raphael Assuncao (20-4 MMA, 4-1 UFC) vs. T.J. Dillashaw (8-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC), featherweights Rodrigo Damm (11-6 MMA, 2-1 UFC) vs. Hacran Dias (21-2-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC), and flyweights Chris Cariaso (14-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) vs. Iliarde Santos (27-8-1 MMA, 0-2 UFC).

The latest UFC Fight Night 29 card now includes:

Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields
Dong Hyun Kim vs. Erick Silva
Rony Jason vs. Jeremy Stephens
Matt Hamill vs. Thiago Silva
Joey Beltran vs. Fabio Maldonado
Raphael Assuncao vs. T.J. Dillashaw
Rodrigo Damm vs. Hacran Dias
Chris Cariaso vs. Iliarde Santos

Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Pierce targeted for UFC Fight Night 29

A welterweight bout between Rousimar Palhares (14-5 MMA, 7-4 UFC) and Mike Pierce (17-5 MMA, 9-3 UFC) is in the works and expected to be part of October's UFC Fight Night 29 lineup.

MMAjunkie confirmed the likely matchup following an initial report from Lancenet.

UFC officials haven't made a formal announcement.

UFC Fight Night 29 takes place Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The main card airs on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on Facebook.

Palhares vs. Pierce is likely to be part of the main card.

It's another head-scratching booking for Pierce, who's won four consecutive fights but again finds himself fighting a non-top 10 opponent. In fact, Palhares has dropped two straight fights, is debuting in the weight class after a drop down from middleweight, and fights for the first time since a failed drug test due to high testosterone levels.

Pierce, who's ranked No. 11 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com MMA welterweight rankings, is 8-2 in his past 10 fights. The wrestler's only losses during the span came via split decision to perennial contenders Johny Hendricks and Josh Kocheck.

Palhares, a submission specialist, looks to rebound from back-to-back knockout losses to Alan Belcher and Hector Lombard. Prior to the setbacks, the Brazilian was on a 6-1 run that pushed him into the title picture. However, he may now be fighting for his job.

The latest UFC Fight Night 29 card includes:

Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields
Dong Hyun Kim vs. Erick Silva
Rony Jason vs. Jeremy Stephens
Matt Hamill vs. Thiago Silva
Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Pierce*
Joey Beltran vs. Fabio Maldonado
Raphael Assuncao vs. T.J. Dillashaw
Rodrigo Damm vs. Hacran Dias
Chris Cariaso vs. Iliarde Santo

UFC Fight Night 29 in Brazil adds Alcantara vs. Araujo, Patrick vs. Whiteley

The UFC's October event in Brazil continues to take shape as two more contests have reportedly been added to the UFC Fight Night 29 lineup.

Brazilian outlet Combate first reported that UFC officials have booked Ildemar Alcantara (19-5 MMA, 2-0 UFC) vs. Igor Araujo (23-6 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and Alan Patrick (10-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) vs. Garett Whiteley (5-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC). MMAjunkie has since verified that verbal agreements are in place and bout agreements are expected to be finalized shortly.

Featuring a welterweight headliner between Demian Maia and Jake Shields, UFC Fight Night 29 takes place Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The evening's main card airs on FOX Sports 1, though the night's bout order has not yet been determined.

Alcantara, brother of bantamweight contender Yuri Alcantara, fights for the third time under the UFC banner. After taking a short-notice fight against Wagner Prado at 205 pounds, Alcantara has since dropped down to his more natural division at welterweight and currently boasts a nine-fight win streak.

Araujo was a cast member on "The Ultimate Fighter 16," where he fought for Shane Carwin's team. Aruajo was eliminated in the quarterfinal round by eventual winner Colton Smith. Araujo wasn't immediately invited to the UFC and picked up a recent win over Nic Herron-Webb in a fight for California's Flawless Fighting Championship organization.

Lightweights Patrick and Whiteley also make their UFC debuts.

Brazilian Patrick has been fighting professionally since 2008, appearing most recently under the Bitetti Combat banner. "Nuguette" is perfect through his first 10 professional contests with three of his wins coming by knockout and two by submission.

Meanwhile, Whiteley hails from Indiana and also sports a perfect professional record. All five of his wins have come by submission, including four fights that were finished in the very first round.

With the additions to the UFC Fight Night 29 lineup, the card now includes:

Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields
Dong Hyun Kim vs. Erick Silva
Rony Jason vs. Jeremy Stephens
Matt Hamill vs. Thiago Silva
Joey Beltran vs. Fabio Maldonado
Raphael Assuncao vs. T.J. Dillashaw
Rodrigo Damm vs. Hacran Dias
