UFC 166 bonuses: Melendez, Sanchez, Dodson and Ferguson win $60,000

Gilbert Melendez, Diego Sanchez, John Dodson and Tony Ferguson each earned $60,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday's UFC 166 event.

Melendez and Sanchez earned the "Fight of the Night," Dodson won "Knockout of the Night" and Ferguson picked up "Submission of the Night" honors.

UFC President Dana White announced the winners at the night's post-event news conference, which MMAjunkie attended.

UFC 166 took place at Houston's Toyota Center. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and Facebook.

To say that Melendez (22-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Sanchez (24-6 MMA, 13-6 UFC) is merely the "Fight of the Night" would probably be an understatement. As of now, it's arguably the "Fight of the Year." And UFC commentator Joe Rogan, immediately after the fight, had already anointed it the best fight he'd ever seen. Melendez bloodied up Sanchez in the first round with an elbow that sliced him open above his left eye. That cut would be an issue for the doctors throughout the fight – but not for Sanchez, who continually said he was fine to continue when it was looked at. Likely needing a finish to win the fight in the third, Sanchez nearly got it. He dropped Melendez and went after him. But Melendez survived and took the unanimous decision. Aside from the massive amounts of blood from Sanchez's head, the fight featured many wild combinations with the two slinging and swinging at each other. What it may have sometimes lacked in technical mastery, it made up for in entertainment, without question.

Dodson (15-6 MMA, 4-1 UFC) returned for the first time since a flyweight title fight loss to Demetrious Johnson in January, and he shut down UFC newcomer Darrell Montague (13-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in a big way. He drilled him in the first round, but didn't move in for the kill, instead staying patient. That paid off for him moments later when he hit Montague with a left, sending him face first to the canvas.

Ferguson (14-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) returned from a lengthy injury layoff and showed virtually no cage rust in stopping Mike Rio (9-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in the first round. Ferguson landed a short left hook that had Rio wobbling, and he then went right after a D'Arce choke, locking it up with relative ease on the ground to force the tap.

Mooie UFC inderdaad.

Dana heeft het na het gevecht perfect verwoord: "JDS is too tough for his own good".

On November 12, 2011, Junior Dos Santos (http://www.MixedMartialArts.com/f/38C6BAA5BBEE0AEB/Junior-Dos-Santos/) knocked out Cain Velasquez (http://www.MixedMartialArts.com/f/C2080A16A554CE39/Cain-Velasquez/) in 62 seconds, and became the UFC heavyweight champion. On December 29 of the next year, Cain regained the title, with an emphatic five round decision. On October 19 the pair had a rubber match, in a fight so one sided that many feel there should be a rules change around stopping non competitive fights.
However, in an exclusive interview with Tatame, dos Santos says that Cain did not prove he is tghe better fighter.

Carlos Antunes: What went wrong in the fight?
Junior Dos Santos (http://www.MixedMartialArts.com/f/38C6BAA5BBEE0AEB/Junior-Dos-Santos/): It was a fight that, for sure, was heavily studied beforehand by both sides, my team as much as his. But I believe that in the end, his team brought a more effective strategy in order to fight just to win. My strategy was to impose my game and, as always, get the knockout. Perhaps it was a more emotional strategy than a rational one.
CA: You knocked Velasquez out in 2011. Why weren't you able to repeat that result this time?
JDS (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=news.search&phrase=JDS): What was missing for me was the distance to finish my combinations. His goal was accomplished, as every time he felt one of my punches, he clinched and leaned into me, allowing himself enough time to recover.
CA: Do you regret going for the choke that directly led to your being finished in the fight?
JDS: No. I was confident that I was able to win and was trying to in every way that I could, even including this choke attempt that ended up turning against me, as in the process of Velasquez defending the choke, I hit my head on the mat, which caused the technical knockout.
CA: After the fight, you took photos with Cain. Did you guys get the chance to talk?
JDS: I had just finished a huge fight against the athlete I consider my biggest rival in my weight class. Putting the result aside for a second, I have grown a lot and learned a lot from this rivalry. And what continues is the feeling of respect.
CA: Do you consider Cain the greatest UFC heavyweight of all time?
JDS: I think that today we are fighting at a different level than what had ever previosuly been fought. It's difficult to compare, but he's one of the best for sure.
CA: You received an indefinite medical suspension. When do you think you're going to be back inside the Octagon?
JDS: I'm not sure yet. My team and I are waiting for some analyses that will be taken. My facial bruises and swelling have already healed.
CA: Do you believe this loss will make you stronger in the future?
JDS: I believe so, yes. The more I fight, the more I learn and the stronger I get, thus making me a better fighter each and every time. The biggest lesson I learned from this fight is that besides counting on ability, training, and heart, it is necessary to formulate an effective strategy and follow it, which is not as simple as it seems. Negative results should not bring us down but rather become agents which make us better each and every time.
CA: Do you intend to change anything in your training?
JDS: We always haveto look for ways to improve ourselves, and life requires constant change. I'm not satisfied with the way things went in this fight, such an important fight for my career. So, definitely, there will be some changes made.
CA: Where do you see yourself in the heavyweight division right now?
JDS: I still consider myself one of the main challengers to the title. He showed that he had an effective strategy to win the fight, looking to play it safe while not taking many chances to show he was the better fighter, blocking my punches in a way that is typical of wrestlers. He applied pressure, grabbing hold of me and avoiding the fight, making the fight boring, making the audience boo a lot. An effective strategy to win, but he didn't prove he was the better fighter.

Chael Sonnen Thinks JDS Should Fire Cornermen For Taking Years Off His Life
Everyone’s favorite analyst, hype-man, and opinionated troublemaker Chael Sonnen had some choice words for Junior Dos Santos’ corner man in a recent Q&A in Manchester, England. He expressed a sense of negligence on the part of Cigano’s corner after the October 19th fight against defending Heavyweight Champion, Cain Velasquez.
“Junior Dos Santos’ cornerman needs to be cut, period. That was beyond inappropriate, that they sent him back out there. The doctor comes in twice, what that doctor was looking for I have no idea. The referee didn’t stop the fight, though he should have. Ultimately, it defaults to your cornerman, who you trust, who is like a father figure, and that guy let Junior Dos Santos down, period. The commission licenses these cornermen. I don’t have the foggiest idea why; I guess just to take their $25. That should be the first cornerman that’s suspended, that was beyond wrong what he did. You do not stop the fight when your fighter can no longer continue. You stop the fight when your fighter can no longer win. The second your guy can’t win, you get him out of there. That fight should have been stopped way earlier. It knocked years off of Junior’s life and career, that cornerman should be fired.”

Ultimately, this leads me (and probably many other fans and fighters) to wonder; when, exactly, is the point where you realize that you can not win? There are plenty of terrific UFC fights that only shot their way into the top 100 because of a devastating, unforeseen upset. One of my personal favorites even includes Sonnen: the infamous Silva v Sonnen I. The creed of almost any fighter is to not be pulled out when they still have a chance, and with this sport one well placed, hazy punch can be the difference between contender and champion.
