Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira title fight moved to UFC 172

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (19-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) and challenger Glover Teixeira (22-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) can’t seem to hold on to a fight date.

After initially saying the fight would remain a part of UFC 171 despite the recent booking of a Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler title fight, UFC President Dana White later clarified Jones vs. Teixeira instead will headline UFC 172.

A date, as well as a location and venue, haven’t been finalized for the pay-per-view card, which is expected to take place in late March or early April.

This is now the fourth different booking for Jones vs. Teixeira.

UFC officials briefly linked the fight to February’s UFC 169 event before shifting it to UFC 170. However, champ Jones was still on the mend from a “Fight of the Year” candidate win over Alexander Gustafsson, and the bout was then booked for UFC 171.

Now, it’ll be UFC 172.

Jones currently boasts a 10-fight winning streak that includes victories over the likes of Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort, Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Most recently, he defeated a game Gustafsson in a “Fight of the Year” candidate. Following the fight, White hinted that a rematch seemed the most likely scenario but ultimately backed off that decision and plugged Teixeira into the title fight.

Teixeira, meanwhile, was named the No. 1 contender following a first-round TKO win over Ryan Bader in September. The Brazilian slugger boasts a 20-fight winning streak and has also downed James Te Huna, Jackson, Fabio Maldonado and Kyle Kingsbury in his five UFC appearances to date. Among his 22 career wins are 13 knockouts and six submissions.

Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira set for April 26 at UFC 172 in Baltimore

Jon Jones ‘ next light heavyweight title defense finally has a date and a home.

Jones (19-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) will meet Glover Teixeira (22-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) at UFC 172 on April 26 at Baltimore Arena in Maryland. The pay-per-view event will be the UFC’s first visit to the city and state.

UFC officials made the announcement on Friday, citing an original report from the Baltimore Sun.

The fight has had several dates and locations, but now finally has a firm one locked in. The show originally was announced for the UFC 169 main event next month on Super Bowl weekend. Then it moved to UFC 170 in Las Vegas, three weeks later. Then it found a spot at the top of the bill of UFC 171 in March in Dallas. But Johny Hendricks-Robbie Lawler took that spot, pushing Jones-Teixeira to later in the spring.

A month ago, Jones’ brother, Baltimore Ravens defensive end Arthur Jones, tweeted that he was excited his brother would be fighting in Baltimore on April 26. But that date remained merely a rumor until Friday’s official announcement.

Jones is coming off arguably his toughest test yet in MMA, a five-round decision win over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in September. The “Fight of the Year” candidate won “Fight of the Night” honors, but it also sent Jones to the hospital, bloodied and battered after a unanimous nod that many observers scored for Gustafsson.

The win over Gustafsson was his sixth straight title defense since winning the 205-pound belt against Mauricio Rua nearly three years ago. Since then, he has defended against Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen and Gustafsson.

Jones’ lone MMA loss remains a controversial disqualification against Matt Hamill in December 2009 for illegal elbows. Most, including UFC President Dana White, consider that loss to come with an asterisk on his resume, at best.

Jammer deze partij. Ik gun het Glover van harte, maar het was netjes geweest als Gus het nog een keer mocht doen.

Henderson vs Cormier toegevoegd aan deze card. Toch nog een vrij behoorlijk maincard.

Ome Dana noemt het 'the most stacked card ever' haha.
