When UFC (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=news.search&phrase=UFC) light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/f/54494EFC3CC798A0/Jon-Jones/) fought Alexander Gustafsson (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/f/6D0BC38F2330A9C3/Alexander-Gustafsson/) at UFC 165 on Sept. 21, 2013, it was so close many fans thought an immediate rematch was in order. As it turned out, "The Mauler" next mauled JimiManuwa at UFC Fight Night 37 on March 8. And Saturday night Jones beat Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 live on PPV.
Thus the stars were aligned for a rematch.
"Gustafsson gets the next fight against Jones," said UFC President Dana White at the post-fight press con. "We gotta see how that plays out. I don't know, physically, how Jones is right now."
While Las Vegas is the natural choice for a fight of this magnitude, White was asked if he would consider doing it in Gustafsson's native Sweden.
"We've got to take the fight wherever the fight is going to do the best," said White. "This thing could do 50 or 60,000 seats or more. If we go to Europe to do it, we will."
Sweden is a long way from Jones' native upstate NY, and White was asked if the champ might balk at fighting in his opponent's hometown.
“Jon’s going to agree to whatever fight we make,” said White. “What’s Jon going to agree to? Where’s he going to want to fight? Seattle?”
“Sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. We don’t ever have people say, ‘This is where I’m going to fight my fight.’ It’s never happened. It won’t happen. We’ve got to take the fight wherever the fight is going to do the best.”
White added that the fight would be on US, not European time.
For his part, the victorious Jones was understandably not ready to talk about it.
"I don't really want to talk about... I don’t really wanna talk about that kid at all,” said Jones. “I’m not gonna talk about him at all. No, man. I’m having a good time. I just won a fight.”
“I have no clue when I want to fight again. I’m not really thinking about the future at this point. I just want to live in the moment right now and just be grateful with what’s happening right now.”
What is happening right now is the ascension of Jones to the top of the pound for pound list, and if his win streak continues, his inclusion on the very short list for greatest of all time.
