At today’s Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) – Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) kickoff press conference in Los Angeles, California, Lara revealed that if he gets past the 23-year-old Canelo in their fight on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Lara will be targeting Floyd Mayweather Jr. to get that fight.
Lara said “This is the fight we pushed for and this is the fight we got. Now it’s time to go to work. It’s going to be a great fight. Canelo is young and strong. I’m going to do what I do, which is box beautifully and fight if I have to, and it’s going to be a really interesting fight for the fans.

First, I’ll be focused on Canelo Alvarez, and I’m going to handle business on July 12th. Once I get that done with Canelo 100 percent, Floyd Mayweather is who I want. But first things first, let’s take care of business.Canelo was bent out of shape about Lara having trash talked him on twitter, and he feels that he was disrespected. Canelo says the reason why the boxing fans wanted him to fight Lara was because of the things that Lara said rather than what he accomplished in the ring. It doesn’t make much sense, but that’s what Canelo feels. Anyone with two eyes can see that Lara is a very good fighter. Canelo will find that out for himself on July 12th.
“I was offended on Twitter, social media,” Canelo said. “They said a bunch of things about me, but it doesn’t matter. I’m here to prove who I am and I’m going to win on July 12th. The fans kept asking for it, not because he’s such a great fighter, but because he was talking so much [expletive] on twitter. He offended me and he offended my character. And that’s what the fans wanted, so I wanted to give the fans what they want. I always want to fight the best. To be the best, you have to fight the best. That’s one of the things I’ve always said. It’s a goal of mine to be the best and fight the best. It’s doing honor and glory. It’s not about a title. No, I feel fine [in making 154]. I can still make the weight comfortably. My body feels fine. I’m going to stay here for awhile.”
Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions was the one working the press conference instead of Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer. It’s unknown why Schaefer wasn’t there. You don’t want to speculate too much, but you have to wonder where Schaefer was at because he’s been the one running the press conferences for years as Golden Boy’s front man.
The fight won’t have Lara’s WBA title on the line because Canelo has no interest in fighting for that title so they’re just going to have a regular fight without it.
