Background

A Middleweight Championship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_Middleweight_Championship) bout between the current champion Chris Weidman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Weidman) and number one contender Vitor Belfort (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitor_Belfort) was scheduled to headline this event.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-weidmanbelfort-1) However, on February 27, the Nevada State Athletic Commission officially banned testosterone-replacement therapy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Androgen_replacement_therapy) (TRT) from combat sports. Belfort, who has admitted to using such therapy, was forced to withdraw from the bout and stated, "Given the time constraints involved between now and my proposed next bout in May, I have determined not to apply for a license to fight in Nevada at this time."
The main event was quickly changed as former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyoto_Machida) agreed to step in to face Weidman for the title in the main event. However, on March 24, the UFC announced that Weidman had suffered a knee injury and that a new headline bout would be found. The Weidman title defense against Machida was moved to July's UFC 175 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_175).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-2)[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-3)
After the announcement that Weidman/Machida bout had been moved, a Bantamweight Championship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_Bantamweight_Championship) bout between Renan Barão (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renan_Bar%C3%A3o) and Raphael Assunção (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raphael_Assun%C3%A7%C3%A3o) was targeted as the event headliner. However, Assunção opted to decline the bout as a rib injury sustained in his last bout at UFC 170 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_170) had not healed enough to resume the proper training in advance of the event.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-4) Barão will now face T.J. Dillashaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T.J._Dillashaw) in the main event.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-5) As a result, Dillashaw's original opponent at the event, Takeya Mizugaki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeya_Mizugaki), will face Francisco Rivera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Rivera_%28fighter%29).[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-6)
The originally scheduled co-main event was Junior dos Santos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_dos_Santos) against Stipe Miocic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stipe_Miocic).[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-7) However, that bout was moved and will take place a week later on May 31, 2014 at The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 Finale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ultimate_Fighter:_Brazil_3#The_Ultimate_Fighte r_Brazil_3_Finale:_dos_Santos_vs._Miocic).[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-8) Subsequently, the bout between Dan Henderson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Henderson) and Daniel Cormier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Cormier), briefly linked to UFC 175 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_175)[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-9) was moved up to this event to bolster the card.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-Henderson.2FDC-10)
The coaches bout between The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ultimate_Fighter:_Brazil_3) participants Chael Sonnen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chael_Sonnen) and Wanderlei Silva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanderlei_Silva) was briefly linked to this event. However, the fight was moved twice - first being on May 31, 2014 at The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3 Finale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ultimate_Fighter:_Brazil_3#UFC_Fight_Night:_So nnen_vs._Wanderlei),[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-11) but now it will be contested on July 5, 2014 at UFC 175 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_175).[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-12)
A lightweight bout between Yves Edwards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yves_Edwards) and Piotr Hallman was expected to take place at this event. However, the bout was moved to UFC Fight Night 42 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_Fight_Night_42).[13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-13)
Chris Holdsworth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Holdsworth) was expected to face Kyung Ho Kang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyung_Ho_Kang) at the event. However, Kang pulled out of the bout and was replaced by Chico Camus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chico_Camus).[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-14)
Doo Ho Choi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doo_Ho_Choi) was expected to make his promotional debut at the event against Sam Sicilia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Sicilia). However, Choi was forced out of the bout with an injury,[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-15) and was replaced by UFC newcomer Aaron Phillips.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-16)
Danny Mitchell was expected to face promotional newcomer Li Jingliang. However, Mitchell pulled out of the bout with an injury.[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-17) Replacing Mitchell will be The Ultimate Fighter: Team Carwin vs. Team Nelson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ultimate_Fighter:_Team_Carwin_vs._Team_Nelson) cast member David Michaud.[18] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_173#cite_note-Li.2FMichaud-18)

Hendo on Cormier: Everyone loses

Former US Olympic wrestling team captain Daniel Cormier (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=news.search&phrase=Daniel%20Cormier) has never lost in mixed martial arts. Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 174 (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=news.search&phrase=UFC%20174), he fights Dan Henderson (http://www.MixedMartialArts.com/f/890D91EBBBB5D9D5/Dan-Henderson/), one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport.
Hendo appeared recently on MMA Fight Corner Radio, and addressed the streak.
"I'm not really worried about anybody's record," said Henderson. "Everybody starts out undefeated, and eventually they will lose, and May 24 will be his day."

Cormier: I wasn't exactly happy about fighting Hendo
Three months ago, UFC president Dana White told heavyweight Daniel Cormier (http://www.MixedMartialArts.com/f/53958F286CF4E375/Daniel-Cormier/), 35, that a title shot was his. However, first current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones had to fight Glover Teixeira, which took place at UFC 172 last month, and then the winner, which ended up being Jones, had a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson.
So Cormier had a title shot, but it probably wouldn't happen until 2015. The lure of a guaranteed title shot is huge.
"I didn't win the Olympics. I didn't win the world championships. I didn't win the NCAA tournament. I always have been one of the best guys, but I have never been the best guy," said Cormier recently.
"It will be great to be 35, 36 years old and to finally achieve what I strived so many times in my life to be: The absolute best at whatever it is I'm doing. I've always been close, but I've never been the best, and winning the UFC championship would be the completion of an athletic dream that started when I was fricking 8-9 years old."
However, Cormier is risking his position Saturday night live on PPV vs. Dan Henderson (http://www.MixedMartialArts.com/f/890D91EBBBB5D9D5/Dan-Henderson/) at UFC 173 (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=news.search&phrase=UFC%20173).
Further complicating the decision, Cormier did not want to fight Hendo. Cormier was a member of the 2004 and 2008 US Olympic wrestling teams. Hendo competed for the US in 1992 and 1996.
“I wasn’t exactly happy about it,” said Cormier to MMAJunkie (http://mmajunkie.com/2014/05/why-daniel-cormier-didnt-want-to-fight-dan-henderson-but-will-anyway)'s Steven Marrocco (https://twitter.com/MMAjunkieSteven). “I would much rather not fight Dan Henderson (http://www.MixedMartialArts.com/f/890D91EBBBB5D9D5/Dan-Henderson/). He’s a guy that I’ve looked up to for a long time.
“Dan is the first guy I can go into the cage with and say this guy’s done everything that I’ve done, and he’s actually done things at a much higher level than I have.”
“I wrestle and I compete to win, and that’s what I plan on doing against Dan."
“I have a mad amount of respect for him, and I believe he’s going to push me and make me fight harder than most opponents have ever made me fight."

Jake Ellenberger on facing Robbie Lawler: 'This is my world title fight'

Mike Chiappetta
FOX Sports
MAY 19, 2014 3:29p ET

“In my mind this is my world title fight right here. I have to succeed at this. Every fight is important but I haven't looked an inch past this fight. This is it. This is my world title fight right here.”

Jake Ellenberger

Ellenberger's heavy hands are ready for Saturday night, and an old friend.

During the last days of his UFC 173 training camp, Jake Ellenberger was hit by a small wave of nostalgia. Speaking with an old coach, the 29-year-old thought back nearly a decade, when he occasionally used to make the 300-mile drive from Omaha, Nebraska to Bettendorf, Iowa. A long ride made with an important purpose: to train with that coach, Pat Miletich, and what at that time was the preeminent team in the sport, Miletich Fighting Systems.
"There were so many studs in the gym at that time," he told FOX Sports. "It was a killer room."
Among those who called it home: Matt Hughes, who at the time was still wearing the UFC welterweight title belt; Tim Sylvia, then one of the best heavyweights in the world; Jens Pulver, Spencer Fisher.
And then there was the other kid, the quiet southpaw who was already in the UFC, cast in the role of the next big thing.
Robbie Lawler was a prodigy, and from time to time, he was an Ellenberger training partner.
Fast forward to the present day, and much has changed. Ellenberger is based in California; Lawler trains with the Florida-based American Top Team. But all this time later, a lifetime in MMA years, really, Ellenberger and Lawler are more relevant than ever.

In the most recent UFC welterweight rankings, Lawler is listed as the No. 1 contender while Ellenberger is four slots behind at No. 5. Which means when they meet at UFC 173 on Saturday night, there will be very real implications to their respective careers. The guys who met all those years ago in Iowa now stand in each other's path to the belt.
"It's going to be hard not to have an exciting fight," he said. "There's absolutely no way this couldn't be an exciting fight. We're both familiar with each other. There's no secret to either guy's skills. We're two guys who are dangerous. He knows where I'm good and I definitely know where he's good. It's going to be who's more disciplined in the later rounds, in my opinion."
There's no ignoring the first part of his answer as it pertains to entertainment value. Coming off a three-round decision loss to Rory MacDonald in a bout that was roundly characterized as a stinker, Ellenberger can't afford a similar outcome this time.
That's mostly because tops among that fight's critics was UFC president Dana White, who when asked his opinion simply said, "that fight sucked so bad."
No fighter wants to hear those words after a lengthy camp, but it seems mostly to be water under the bridge now. For one, Ellenberger has since signed a contract extension he was thrilled with. For another, White called himself to offer the Lawler fight, and was "extremely excited" to make the match, according to Ellenberger. That means there can be no disappointing the boss this time around.
"Dana is the most honest guy you'll meet," he said. "It was a disappointing fight. We both got chewed out a little bit and that's it. But he's the first guy to tell you,' Hey, don't dwell on this. Move on, get back to training and refocus.' As i expected, Dana's all about it. He wants to see us succeed. After that night it's over. Unfortunately, that's what competing is. One guy wins, one loses, and we happen to be in the toughest sport in the world."

The 10 months between then and now have given Ellenberger a rare break, allowing him time to improve his health, focusing on postural strengthening and a nagging knee injury. It also offered him a new perspective on his career. While he continues to work with longtime team Reign and renowned coach Rafael Cordeiro, around the start of 2014, he joined forced with trainer Edmond Tarverdyan, who is most well known for his work with women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.
Ellenberger characterizes Tarverdyan as a "brilliant mind."
"The difference that stands out between him and other coaches is his constant communication," he said. "In a sport where details are so important, you can't communicate too much. That individual attention, that extra level of communication, that's the biggest value to me. He understands distance, he understands so much about the striking game. We just clicked."
Whether or not the union works as a long-term arrangement, it certainly has some utility against Lawler, who makes no secret that his striking style is heavily influenced by boxers like Evander Holyfield. That fusion style is right up the alley of Tarverdyan, who teaches several standup arts.

Like Ellenberger, Lawler is known for throwing bombs.

The resulting matchup of Ellenberger and Lawler is one of power -- both each have 18 career knockouts. Still, Ellenberger believes it's not KO power but intelligence that will decide the outcome, which is why any little edge could make a difference. Those fine details that are a Tarverdyan trademark? One of them could provide the final piece of the puzzle.
The winner's prize includes a possible date with champion Johny Hendricks, but in MMA, most successful athletes learn never to focus on dates too far ahead or dwell on what's already been left behind. That's why that winner's prize is so easy to ignore for Ellenberger. It is a maybe, a possibility when there is something so tangible standing before him. His past brought around full circle into a measurement of how far he's come and where he stands.
"In my mind this is my world title fight right here," Ellenberger said. "I have to succeed at this. Every fight is important but I haven't looked an inch past this fight. This is it. This is my world title fight right here."

Lawler: If they scored damage, I'd be champion

http://media.ufc.tv/photo_galleries/ufc171_13_hendricks_vs_lawler/ufc171_13_hendricks_vs_lawler_007.jpgUFC welterweight Robbie Lawler
(http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Robbie-Lawler)While George Thorogood fancies himself “Bad To The Bone,” for “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler, on the day he was born the head nurse likely spoke up too, and said ‘Leave this one alone,’ she could tell right away, he was “Ruthless To The Bone.”

Lawler, currently ranked number one in the welterweight division following a razor-thin loss to now-champ Johny Hendricks (http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Johny-Hendricks), will put himself to the test once again this weekend at UFC 173, against another hard-hitting fighter from the Midwest, Jake Ellenberger (http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Jake-Ellenberger).

Taking another fight just two months after putting in 25 minutes against the champ is not a common event in one of the world’s toughest sports, but for Lawler, it’s just another day at the office.

“I was ready to fight, it’s as simple as that,” he says. “I told (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva I wanted to get back in as soon as possible. I didn’t take any damage against Hendricks, so why not?”

Didn’t take any damage against Hendricks?

That’s a scary proposition for “The Juggernaut,” as Hendricks, like Ellenberger, is considered one of the hardest-hitting welterweights in the division, with KOs against some of the toughest contenders in the sport.

“I did the most damage in that fight, but I lost. He did a good job in winning enough rounds I guess. It’s not PRIDE. They don’t score damage in the UFC. If they did, I would be the champ today. Now I just have to work my way back, but I’m not thinking about Hendricks anymore. I’m thinking about Jake,” he said.

Much has been made of Lawler’s comeback since knocking Josh Koscheck (http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Josh-Koscheck) out in the first round of his UFC return, but what many forget, or simply ignore, is that prior to his latest success inside the Octagon, he was mostly fighting at catchweights and in a higher weight division in several different promotions.

Not only was he inconsistent in the win column, but on the scales as well.

“I’m leaner now than I’ve ever been before weigh-ins,” he said. “Fighting at 170 is good for me. It keeps me eating clean and in the gym, so I am living like a welterweight instead of a middleweight.”

The change has served him well. And while the surging Matt “The Immortal” Brown may very well lay claim to the number one contender spot with a title elimination in his next bout, there’s no doubt that a win over Ellenberger would put Lawler back in the mix sooner rather than later.

“I want the belt,” says Lawler. “But at the same time it’s not something I think about all the time. I just focus on myself and getting better.”

For MMA observers, fighting consistently at 170 isn’t the only recent change in Lawler’s career. The 2014 version of “Ruthless” is someone more comfortable with the media and the fans.

“I remember watching Matt Hughes (http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Matt-Hughes) become champion and it became a job for him,” he said. “I didn’t want that to happen to me but then Matt also embraced it and was professional about media obligations and appearances and things. And that’s just part of our job these days. And I’m having fun doing it. Plus, the media guys have gotten a lot better than when we were first coming up in the sport. Back then there were only a few of you guys who knew anything about the sport. Now the questions we get are a lot better than the ones we used to get, so it’s easier to talk to the media now.”

Indeed, the MMA media have, for the most part, come a long way in the 13 years since Lawler first donned a pair of four-ounce gloves in April 2001. But so has Lawler.

While he has always possessed pure punching power, Lawler’s game is not as one-dimensional as it once was, as evidenced by his ability to stuff Hendricks’ takedown attempts. Gone are the days when a Jake Shields (http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Jake-Shields) could easily catch him in a submission on the ground.

“I’ve been getting a lot better,” said the American Top Team product. “I’ve taken my game up a couple of notches, but I’m constantly learning new things in this sport.”

Perhaps the greatest change in Lawler’s curriculum has been an attitude adjustment. At 170, Lawler looks like he’s going to the playground, rather than going to the job.

“I’m having fun, yeah,” says Lawler. “I’m looking forward to putting on a great show for the fans, especially the veterans on Memorial Day weekend.”

UFC 173's Renan Barao: 'T.J. Dillashaw Thinks He's a Striker and He Isn't'

T.J. Dillashaw has certainly made improvements to his striking skill set over the past two years, but apparently Renan Barao (http://bleacherreport.com/renan-barao) isn't all too impressed.
The Ultimate Fighter 14 alum came into the UFC with strong wrestling skills and a well of athleticism that propelled him to victories in his first two showings inside the Octagon. While his talents were obvious, the 28-year-old's attack was borderline one-dimensional, and he knew his arsenal of weapons would have to expand if he were ever going to make a run at the bantamweight title.
Enter Duane "Bang" Ludwig and the evolution (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mma--tactical-genius--duane-ludwig-has-team-alpha-male-a-step-ahead-of-the-game-220048961.html) of Team Alpha Male.
The retired UFC veteran set up shop as the head coach of the Sacramento-based collective, and the results were immediate. In addition to several standout performances by his teammates, Dillashaw earned impressive stoppage wins in his next two outings, as his much-improved striking dismantled Issei Tamura and Hugo Viana, respectively. While his next bout resulted in a controversial split-decision loss to Raphael Assuncao last October, Dillashaw's performance was solid as he gave the Brazilian veteran all he could handle throughout the 15-minute affair and proved he belonged in the upper tier of the bantamweight fold.
http://img.bleacherreport.net/img/article/media_slots/photos/001/548/689/hi-res-8059f73bada3f9519244867b06bfc3a9_crop_exact.jpg?w= 340&h=227&q=85 USA TODAY Sports

He would get things back on track in his next showing against Mike Easton at Fight Night 35 back in January as he worked a well-rounded game to earn a lopsided unanimous-decision victory. While his win over "The Hulk" put him within striking distance of a title shot, a booking against Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 173 (http://bleacherreport.com/ufc-173) meant it was going to take at least another win for a championship opportunity to materialize.
Yet, when the UFC's annual Memorial Day event lost its headlining bout (http://mmajunkie.com/2014/03/ufc-bantamweight-champ-renan-barao-faces-t-j-dillashaw-in-new-ufc-173-headliner), the organization tapped the surging contender to face bantamweight champion Renan Barao in the main event on May 24.
"The Baron" has been a wrecking machine since joining the UFC in 2011. In just three years, the Nova Uniao product has racked up seven consecutive victories on an impressive run that landed him a seat on the bantamweight throne. Those victories also extended his overall unbeaten streak to 32-straight bouts—a monstrous number in the modern era of MMA (http://bleacherreport.com/mma)—and put his well-rounded attack on display at every turn.
The matchup between Barao and Dillashaw this Saturday night in Las Vegas will pit the rising talent against one of the most dangerous stand-up fighters in MMA. While Dillashaw has certainly made improvements in the striking department, Barao believes the California native is confused about the type of fighter he is, and that will create the opportunity he needs to end the fight.
"I believe T.J. [Dillashaw] thinks he is a striker now, and he isn't," Barao told Bleacher Report through the assistance of a translator. "I think he will mess up and make mistakes in this fight, and this will present the chance for me to finish him. I'm very calm and ready for this fight, and I believe I will win this fight because I'm the better fighter."
http://img.bleacherreport.net/img/article/media_slots/photos/001/548/691/hi-res-1c463f824bb16b9de312dfd628b09c40_crop_exact.jpg?w= 340&h=227&q=85 USA TODAY Sports

While the two fighters will meet for the first time on May 24 in Las Vegas, their respective camps are certainly familiar with one another. The team at Nova Uniao holds three victories in title bouts over the Sacramento-based collective, with two of those wins coming from Barao defeating Dillashaw's team leader and mentor, Urijah Faber. "The California Kid" was also dealt a lopsided loss by Barao teammate and close friend, Jose Aldo, when the two top featherweights scrapped it out for the 145-pound crown under the WEC banner back in 2010.
Although Barao doesn't pay much mind to the past holding any sway on what is yet to come, he does credit his coach Andre "Dede" Pederneiras, Aldo and the rest of their close-knit team for driving him to be the best fighter he can be.
“We have an amazing team at Nova Uniao," Barao said. "We have great fighters that all push one another to be better. 'Dede' is an amazing guy. He has fought in the past and is very strategic, and that helps us very much. Aldo is like a brother to me, and I feel like I learn something new from him every day. It is a great team and an amazing thing to be a part of."

10 reasons to watch UFC 173, and nine of them aren't Renan Barao

http://usatmmajunkie.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/renan-barao-tj-dillashaw-ufc-173.jpg?w=1000
Renan Barao (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/renan-barao) has got a bump in the rankings.
Following UFC Fight Night 40, the UFC’s Brazilian bantamweight champ was the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter behind light heavyweight champ Jon Jones on UFC President Dana White’s list, even though Barao apparently was the No. 1 guy to the executive before Jones recently steamrolled Glover Teixeira at UFC 172.
Now, Barao is the unquestionable top dog, and White is singing it from the rooftops in advance of Saturday’s UFC 173, where the champ attempts the fifth defense of a title that began as an interim strap and morphed into the undisputed variety with now-former kingpin Dominick Cruz’s injury woes.
It’s no great surprise that White’s shift coincides with the promotional buildup of a pay-per-view event, which takes place at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena and features prelim fights on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. But it’s hard to argue that the sales pitch for Barao isn’t getting more extreme, and perhaps less plausible, as he cuts through the bantamweight division, which could be one of the more top-heavy weight classes in the UFC.
With Barao having twice cut down posterboy Urijah Faber and picking up other wins over Eddie Wineland and Michael McDonald, the threats to his crown are bound to be oversold along with his dominance.

The champ is not meeting a fighter on a great winning streak, but rather, the No. 4 guy on the UFC’s official list, T.J. Dillashaw, who sits even further down the ladder on the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA bantamweight rankings (http://mmajunkie.com/rankings) at No. 7. Dillashaw is getting the title shot essentially on the strength of his affiliation with popular MMA squad Team Alpha Male and a recent performance, which ended in a dominant decision win over No. 12 ranked Mike Easton. Prior to that, Raphael Assuncao, who owns a six-fight streak but was passed over the title shot while he recovers from an injury, narrowly outpointed Dillashaw.
Assuncao should get the next title shot if the humble Barao is successful on Saturday night, but the UFC really needs Cruz to get back into the cage to solidify the champ’s credibility. Dillashaw looked like a world beater against Easton, but so did Faber in two run-ups to the belt. Barao waxed “The California Kid,” and probably would do the same to Easton. Indeed, he is on a different level.
He isn’t a monster, though. What kind of monster washes his own clothes in the bathtub?
Not surprisingly, though, Barao is one 10 reasons to watch UFC 173:
1. The dominance of the Boogie Man

A Barao (32-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) fight is a violent thing to watch these days. Since a lackluster UFC debut, the Brazilian 135-pound champ has built a wall of competitive scalps. It’s going to be tough for Dillashaw (9-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) to take the belt away given all the ways he can lose this fight – by fists, kicks or submissions, all of which Barao seems hard-wired to land on a moment’s notice. The Team Alpha Male fighter needs to have a perfect night – and needs Barao to have an off one. As a 5-1 dog in current betting lines, Dillashaw is unlikely to see that convergence of circumstances.
2. Setting up for Jones

Next to Alexander Gustafsson, light heavyweights Daniel Cormier (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/daniel-cormier) (14-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) and Dan Henderson (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/dan-henderson) (30-11 MMA, 7-5 UFC) are the most promotable matchups for champ Jon Jones. Henderson is the second-chance man after sending a planned “Bones” fight and the entire UFC 151 card to the scrap yard due to a knee injury. Cormier is a well-spoken antagonist with some bad blood. Both of the contenders have Olympic wrestling pedigrees, which offers more on paper than in reality. Both have heavy hands and would try to put leather on Jones, and they’ll do the same against each other. Whoever wins the bout, however, is should be up after Gustafsson.
3. The possibility of the H-Bomb

http://usatmmajunkie.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/dan-henderson-ufc-161.jpg?w=300&h=223It still boggles the mind to see 43-year-old “Hendo” lumber around the octagon only to see his right fist change everything on impact. While Henderson’s ability to withstand punishment may be diminishing – he was twice knocked silly by Mauricio “Shogun” Rua before rearranging Rua’s nose – he is still the guy you can’t ever count out. Cormier is younger, faster and may be just as powerful, but we’ve said that about a lot of Henderson opponents, and look what happened.
4. Two sluggers unite on main card

Welterweights Robbie Lawler (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/robbie-lawler) (22-10 MMA, 7-4 UFC) and Jake Ellenberger (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/jake-ellenberger) (29-7 MMA, 8-3 UFC) are on the mend after impressive runs, but Ellenberger is coming into Saturday’s event with a lot of time on the bench courtesy of injuries and scheduling difficulties. After twice-booked opponent Tarec Saffiedine was scratched with yet another injury, Lawler stepped into face Ellenberger in a bout that could put him right back in the title picture. Ellenberger’s path is less clear; after a wholly lackluster loss to Rory MacDonald, he has a few more wins to build before he’s back in the title picture.
The UFC certainly wouldn’t mind seeing Lawler vs. champ Johny Hendricks after the two delivered an all-time barnburner at UFC 171. Lawler’s counter-wrestling mostly kept him out of danger against the new titleholder, and he’ll likely be forced to put it to use again against Ellenberger. The power in Lawler’s hands and Ellenberger’s previous knockout losses mean it’s a bout that could go up and down as “The Juggernaut” tries to keep his heavy-handed opponent’s punches away from his chin. A spot-on Lawler makes a tough night for anyone, which doesn’t seem reflected in the relatively narrow odds.
5. ‘Cisco’ proving a standout

http://usatmmajunkie.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/francisco-rivera-ufc-on-fuel-tv-3.jpg?w=300&h=205If you’ve seen bantamweight Francisco Rivera (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/francisco-rivera) (10-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), it’s probably been as a resident on UFC preliminary cards. So it doesn’t come as much surprise that he might be an underrated asset, particularly with Barao lording over the division. But that could be changing when “Cisco” gets a main-card shot against Takeya Mizugaki (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/takeya-mizugaki) (19-7-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC), who is one of the most reliable measuring sticks for talent and toughness. Beat the Japanese vet, and you’re on to something. And Rivera, who boasts three UFC wins (four if you’re counting a knockout of Roland Delorme that was overturned due to positive test for a banned substance), is on the cusp of a big bump.
6. Varner’s check to cash

Former WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/jamie-varner) (21-9-1 MMA, 3-4 UFC) has been a bankable attraction in his second UFC stint, delivering “Fight of the Night” performances. They don’t always go his way but entertain nonetheless. Still, the fighter is 1-3 in his past four fights, and he needs a win very badly against James Krause (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/james-krause) (20-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC), who might have picked up more notoriety for taking several illegal kicks to the junk before a legal one ended his night against Bobby Green. Krause impressed in his UFC debut with a bottom-of-the-third submission of Sam Stout, which put dual bonuses in his hand. The stage appears set for a raucous fight.
7. ‘TUF’ on Brazil

http://usatmmajunkie.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/michael-chiesa-ufc-fight-night-31.jpg?w=300&h=212“The Ultimate Fighter 15″ winner Michael Chiesa (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/michael-chiesa) (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) still needs more seasoning after falling short to vet Jorge Masvidal this past July, and following his submission win over “TUF 16″ winner Colton Smith, it’s time for him to take a step up. Opponent Francisco Trinaldo (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/francisco-trinaldo) (14-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) is an uneven fighter, with wins over unheralded competition and losses to experienced vets such as Iuri Alcantara and Gleison Tibau. If Chiesa wants to get back onto main cards, he’s got to impress.
8. ‘TUF’ on Japan

“TUF 13″ winner Tony Ferguson (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/tony-ferguson) (14-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is still rebuilding his career after a loss to Michael Johnson was followed by a yearlong injury layoff. After a win over the unheralded Mike Rio this past fall, he takes on former DEEP champion Katsunori Kikuno (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/katsunori-kikuno) (22-5-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who notched an unspectacular decision win over Quinn Mulhern at UFC Fight Night 34. Kikuno’s resume is peppered with losses to top-notch foes, so Ferguson will either prove he’s more than a “TUF” flameout, or he’ll languish on prelims.
9. Just off the ‘TUF’ boat

http://usatmmajunkie.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/chico-camus-kyung-ho-kang-featured.jpg?w=300&h=175Team Alpha Male product and “The Ultimate Fighter 18″ winner Chris Holdsworth (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/chris-holdsworth) (5-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is the newest kid on the block of “TUF” winners. But he doesn’t have an easy test in the Duke Roufus-trained Chico Camus (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/chico-camus) (14-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC), who has three times the fights and more UFC experience. This may be too much for Holdsworth to chew on, but we’ll see.
10. Old and new blood

Lightweight Vinc Pinchel (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/vinc-pinchel) (8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) got a rude awakening to the UFC when he took on Rustam Khabilov and was suplexed into unconsciousness. After a solid win over Garrett Whiteley, he steps back into the cage with striking specialist Anthony Njokuani (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/anthony-njokuani) (16-7 MMA, 3-3 UFC), who always impresses with his slick, fundamentals-based muay Thai.

http://usatmmajunkie.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/renan-barao-tj-dillashaw-ufc-1731.jpg?w=1000

LAS VEGAS – The UFC 173 fighter weigh-ins are in the books, and all 26 fighters on the card hit their marks for Saturday’s event.
In the main event, bantamweight champion Renan Barao (32-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) defends his title against T.J. Dillashaw (9-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC). Dillashaw is the latest Team Alpha Male fighter to fight Barao after teammate Urijah Faber failed twice.
Dillashaw weighed in first and hit 135 pounds on the button. Barao was next to the scale, and he, too, was 135. The fighters then had a tense face-off in front of UFC President Dana White.
“I’m hungry, I’ve got what it takes, I believe in myself, and I ain’t scared,” Dillashaw said.
The co-main event sees Daniel Cormier (14-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) fighting at light heavyweight for just the second time. He meets former PRIDE and Strikeforce champ Dan Henderson (30-11 MMA, 7-5 UFC). Henderson came in well under the mark at 199 pounds. Cormier was 205 on the nose.
And in a crucial fight in the welterweight division, Jake Ellenberger (29-7 MMA, 8-3 UFC) and Robbie Lawler (22-10 MMA, 7-4 UFC) each were 171 pounds for their fight. They then had arguably the event’s most icy staredown before leaving the stage.
