Do you like fun fights? I think you'll like this main event that Bellator has just announced.
Yesterday afternoon, middleweight veteran Brian Rogers teased a "big fight announcement" coming from Bellator. While rumors of Gina Carano and Marloes Coenen being involved were squashed, and the fight they've announced isn't that "big" in the grand scheme of things, it's still something that should be of great interest to fans.
Earlier today, the promotion announced that Melvin Manhoef will make his Bellator debut against former title challenger Doug Marshall in the three-round main event of their September 19th show in Fresno, CA. Additionally, Brian Rogers will take the co-main event slot opposite UFC veteran James Irvin.
Manhoef (28-11-1, 1 NC) last fought in MMA in April, TKOing Evangelista Santos in 46 seconds in a rematch of their 2006 classic in England. The famed kickboxing specialist also competed in the recent Glory "Last Man Standing" tournament, where he lost in the opening round against Filip Zerlinden. He followed that up with a July 26th TKO loss to Cesar Cordoba.
Marshall (18-7) earned a middleweight title shot by decking Brett Cooper in the season 8 tournament final, but against champion Alexander Shlemenko, the 37-year-old was felled by body shots and lost by 1st round TKO. To make matters worse, it was revealed that "The Rhino" had tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended by the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission.
In total, these two have recorded an incredible 38 knockout or TKOs out of a combined 46 wins, so the odds of this one going the distance are fairly slim. It's fun matchmaking between two highly entertaining fighters, and it's something that I'll certainly be looking forward to come mid-September.
Bellator 125 will air live on Spike TV, with preliminary bouts streamed on Spike.com.
