UFC (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=news.search&phrase=UFC) heavyweight Junior Dos Santos (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/f/38C6BAA5BBEE0AEB/Junior-Dos-Santos/) has not fought since October of 2013. He lost a title shot vs. Cain Velasquez then, and was scheduled to fight at the TUF Brazil 3 Finale in May, but a hand injury has kept him out since.
At a recent media event, JDS (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=news.search&phrase=JDS) was asked about the hand.
“It’s almost 100 percent,” said Dos Santos as transcribed by John Morgan (https://twitter.com/MMAjunkieJohn) for MMAJunkie (http://mmajunkie.com/2014/09/junior-dos-santos-almost-100-percent-aiming-for-december-return). “I’m not going to say 100 percent because it’s going to be too much, but it’s almost there. I’m feeling OK from the injuries, and actually I’m ready to go. I’m just training hard, and I think I can prepare for a fight already.”
JDS said the injury did not require surgery, that he is training with Andre Pederneiras' Nova Uniao, and that he expects to be back in the cage in December.
“Right now, it doesn’t really matter to me (who I fight),” said dos Santos. “I just want to fight. I want to fight before the end of the year because it’s very important. In October, it’s going to be one year that I haven’t had a fight. It’s making me very frustrated, and I’m feeling very nervous about that. That’s what I do. That’s what I love to do, and that’s what I do to live, and I can’t wait to be back.”
Ben Rothwell (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/f/9B4C6F6680545D4B/Ben-Rothwell/), coming off a big win over Alistair Overeem, has asked for a fight with dos Santos, who said he had not received an official offer, but that he was game.
“Whatever UFC wants me to do, I will do,” said JDS. “I love what I do. Of course, he did very well against Alistair Overeem, and I think it could be a good fight.”
JDS also said that a often discussed fight with Overeem was not compelling.
"Alistair is a very tough athlete, but it's not very interesting for me to be fighting against him, you know?" said dos Santos as transcribed by Jesse Holland (http://twitter.com/Jesse_Holland) for MMAMania (http://www.mmamania.com/2014/9/12/6139837/junior-dos-santos-abandons-alistair-overeem-fight-says-ufc-hard-mma). "If UFC tells me to fight against him, I will fight against him. Right now, I don't think it's an interesting fight for me. He's an excellent athlete but he's having a very tough time. He just lost to Ben Rothwell (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/f/9B4C6F6680545D4B/Ben-Rothwell/), I think it's very hard for him. He's having a very tough time right now. Maybe in the future we can face each other."
