Two years after losing to former WBC champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, WBC interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) will be facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) in 10 days on October 18th in a fight televised by HBO Championship Boxing at the StubHub Center, in Carson, California.
Rubio, 34, has gained a lot of confidence from being pumped up by his trainer Robert Garcia, who believes strongly that the hard hitting Rubio has a good chance of pulling off an upset in beating Golovkin.

“I feel very confident and focused for this fight and training with Robert Garcia gives me the confidence to know that I can have a big win over Golovkin,” Rubio said to Fightnews.com.
Rubio might need a little bit more than confidence to beat a guy like Golovkin. It’s going to take some skills, power and a lot of good luck on Rubio’s part for him to pull off an upset in this fight. That’s not to say that it’s not possible for Rubio to get the win, but it’s just going to likely take a lot of things to fall in his direction on October 18th for him to get the victory.
Golovkin is younger, stronger, faster, better defensively and more talented than Rubio. That’s kind of the whole ball of wax right there. For Rubio to overcome all the advantages that Golovkin has going for him, he’s going to need to fight at an extremely high level and hope that he catches him with a big shot.
Daniel Geale landed a huge right hand to the chin of Golovkin in their fight last July. Unfortunately for Geale, Golovkin took the punch and game back with a right hand of his own to knock him out.
If Geale had the kind of power that Rubio has then it’s possible that he might have dropped Golovkin, because he was caught cleanly by the punch Geale threw due to him not seeing it.
Robert Garcia probably has a good game plan for Rubio to follow in this fight, but even the best game place likely won’t work against a fighter in Golovkin’s league unless Rubio can catch him with a big shot while he’s looking to throw one of his own big punches.
