Mexico City, Mexico - The UFC® announced today that UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Cain-Velasquez?id=) suffered a right knee injury during training and was forced to withdraw from his championship fight against No.1 contender Fabricio Werdum (http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Fabricio-Werdum?id=) in Mexico City on November 15.
As a result, No.4 heavyweight Mark Hunt (http://www.ufc.com/fighter/mark-hunt) (10-8-1 in professional MMA, fighting out of Auckland, New Zealand), who is coming off a walk-away knockout against the iron-chinned Roy Nelson in Tokyo in September (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGunUlEd50A), will face Werdum (18-5-1, fighting out of Los Angeles via Porto Alegre, Brazil) in the five-round main event for the interim UFC heavyweight title.
“I’m so unbelievably disappointed that this happened,” Velasquez said. “To say I was looking forward to fighting in Mexico for the first time is an understatement. I wanted to fight on that card so bad. Looks like it wasn’t meant to be and it’s not going to happen. I’m going to get my [right] knee fixed and get back to training as soon as I can. I’m sorry to the fans in Mexico who were expecting this fight, and I hope to be able to come down and still be a part of this historic event.”
For Werdum, it was never about Cain, it was always about the title.
“I’m ready for whatever comes. I have been training in Mexico for nearly two months and accept the challenge that is presented to me. I'll continue to prepare and will arrive ready to fight on behalf of all my Latin American fans," said Werdum.
Mark Hunt, never one to shy away from a big opportunity, wasted no time accepting a dream opportunity to fight for UFC gold.
“I feel blessed to have this opportunity to fight for another world title. This is something that doesn’t happen often to people. First K1 and now UFC – how can I say no, even though it’s on short notice? I’m dropping everything and flying to Mexico tomorrow so I can best prepare myself for this fight. I have to get into shape and acclimatize to that environment, which is really important.
“There’s nothing to lose when you’re competing against the best at the top level,” Hunt added.
UFC 180: WERDUM vs. HUNT scheduled for November 15 at the Arena Mexico City, sold-out in only eight hours, and will welcome more than 20,000 fans. Along with the explosive main event, fans will also be treated to six other bouts featuring Latin American contenders.

Helemaal mee eens.

Fan favorite Mark Hunt finally gets crack at (interim) UFC heavyweight title

Hunt is 5-1-1 in his last seven UFC fights and has won five post-fight bonuses in the span. (Getty)

Mark Hunt's life story is turning into a movie before our eyes.
Four years ago, Hunt was at home, unwanted by the UFC, forgotten by the fans. The massive striker who'd won the K1 World Grand Prix kickboxing championship in 2001 had lost five mixed martial arts fights in a row and seemed on a fast track to nowhere.
All of them had ended in the first round. Josh Barnett and Fedor Emelianenko submitted him in 2006 with a Kimura. Alistair Overeem forced a tap with a keylock and Melvin Manhoef stopped him with strikes in 2008.
Gegard Mousasi submitted him with an arm bar in 2009.
Four of the five losses were 2:02 or less. The UFC owned his contract following its purchase of PRIDE, but White had no interest in Hunt.
Hunt, though, didn't want to sit at home and collect money for doing nothing. He's a fighter and fighters fight. When White told him the UFC didn't want him, Hunt fought back. He argued with White and asked for a chance.
After a long back-and-forth, White relented and gave Hunt a shot at UFC 119. Hunt then promptly went out and was submitted by Sean McCorkle just 63 seconds into his UFC debut on Sept. 25, 2010.

Four years later, White picked up the phone and called Hunt again. This time, he needed Hunt to save his show. Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez got hurt in training, suffering a right knee injury that will keep him out of competition until sometime next year, and the mega-show that the UFC was planning was suddenly in trouble.
With only about three weeks until the fight at Mexico City Arena, White had to act quickly when he learned of Velasquez's setback. He offered the bout opposite Fabricio Werdum to Hunt, who was both eager and available.
"I said yes before he even got the question out," Hunt told Yahoo Sports during a brief telephone interview on Tuesday.
Hunt said he weighs "137 kilos, maybe even 138." And then he laughed and said, "No big deal."
Translated to pounds, Hunt weighs a little over 300 now with three-and-a-half weeks before the weigh-in when he has to make 265 pounds on the nose.
That, though, didn't deter him. Hunt loves nothing more than a good fight, and one with big stakes makes it all the better.
"You don't say no to this kind of opportunity," Hunt said. "This is an amazing opportunity and even though I'm not in fight shape or anything, there was never a doubt I was going to take it."
The card is the UFC's first in Mexico, and it was built around Velasquez. The heavyweight champion means so much to the UFC in his home country and throughout Latin America that while he was rehabilitating from left shoulder surgery, White held off on putting a card in Mexico. Velasquez was the UFC's biggest Spanish-speaking star and White repeatedly said the UFC wouldn't go to the country without him.
But fate dealt Velasquez another difficult hand and White had no choice but to find a replacement, because canceling or postponing the show was not an option at such a late date.
So now in steps this unlikely 40-year-old, one who has been beaten in the first round of seven fights overall, coming in dramatically at the last moment to save the show.
And while most would agree that Werdum has the far better all-around game, no one is discounting Hunt's chance to win and earn the interim belt.
"What he has done, and is doing now at 40 years old, is in my opinion, the greatest story in sports," UFC president Dana White told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday. "His record was upside down. He wasn't looking that great. He was on a long losing streak. It didn't make sense for us to bring him in given his record and how things were going for him.

"I told him, 'Look man, we'll pay you what we owe you for the rest of the contract and go ahead and do your thing.' But he got so mad when I said that. '[Expletive] you! [Expletive] you! I'm not doing that. I'm fighting.' And look at him. It turns out that in the long run, he was right and we were wrong. He's earned 10 times what he'd have made if we'd just paid him off and here he is fighting for the title." When White called him this time to offer him the interim title shot against Werdum, Hunt never had a doubt.
He'd knocked out Roy Nelson in the second round of a card in Japan on Sept. 20, and immediately returned home to Australia to enjoy life until his next bout.
Hunt is just 1-1-1 in his last three fights, but the draw was arguably the greatest heavyweight MMA fight ever and one of the best UFC fights of all-time, a match against Antonio "Big Foot" Silva in Brisbane, Australia, on Dec. 6, 2013.
He laughed when his first conversation with White was mentioned, and he said there was no way he was going to take the money and run.
"I've never been a quitter, ever, and I've always had the knack of being able to turn a negative situation in my life into a positive one," Hunt said. "I'm a big believer in Christ and his hand is over my life, and is a big influence on me.
"And I just love what I do. I love it. This is a great opportunity and nothing was going to get me to say no. Yeah, I'm not in fighting shape and I have some weight to drop, but you have to remember, fighting is the easy part. It's what I love to do. So of course I was going to say yes."

Cain Velasquez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/37/cain-velasquez) was planning on fighting Fabricio Werdum (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/38/fabricio-werdum) with a slightly torn meniscus in his right knee, but after spraining his MCL in the same knee late last week, he was forced to pull out of the fight.
According to Javier Mendez (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/2260/javier-mendez), Velasquez's coach at the American Kickboxing Academy, Velasquez has been dealing with a torn meniscus for quite some time, however, he suffered the sprained MCL during a training session (sprawl drills) on Oct. 16 or 17 and that ended his dream of headlining a show in Mexico City (for now, of course).
Velasquez is scheduled to have surgery on his right knee on Thursday in San Jose, Calif. The surgery will fix the torn meniscus, while rehab will be needed for the sprained MCL.
According to UFC president Dana White (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/2230/dana-white), the promotion is hopeful the UFC heavyweight champion will be able to return to action by March, and Mendez, who said Velasquez was in "good spirits" all things considered, agreed with that timeline.
The UFC announced on Tuesday that, as a result of the Velasquez injury, Mark Hunt (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/139/mark-hunt) will now meet (http://www.mmafighting.com/2014/10/21/7034179/cain-velasquez-injured-fabricio-werdum-vs-mark-hunt-interim-title) Werdum at UFC 180 (http://www.mmafighting.com/fight-card/625/UFC-180-velasquez-vs-werdum-hunt) on Nov. 15 for the interim heavyweight title.

Mark Hunt!

First of all Cain is without a doubt one of the best HWs ever. But from a business perspective he's been a nightmare for the UFC

He destroyed Lesnar, eliminating the UFC cash cow. Remember how pissed Dana was post fight?

He then gets KTFO in 1 minute on Fox in front of millions of fans (how many potential newbies?)

He then comes back and destroys JDS, taking away his relevance. JDS has the perfect HW style to attract fans, his first defence v Mir did great PPV numbers. But with Cain champ, he will never get another shot.

Now he gets injured again, ruining the UFC debut in Mexico and gives Bellator far more viewers for their Bonnar Tito fight on free tv.

Dana must hate Cain...

The hits keep coming for next month’s UFC 180, which has lost another matchup, a source today told MMAjunkie.
Joe Lauzon (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/joe-lauzon) (24-9 MMA, 11-6 UFC) is out of a lightweight meeting with Diego Sanchez (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/diego-sanchez) (25-7 MMA, 14-7 UFC), a source close to the fighter confirmed. The source spoke on condition anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
The reason for Lauzon’s withdrawal is unclear, as the source declined to elaborate on why the fighter was forced to withdraw. There is no word yet on a possible replacement for Lauzon with the event less than a month away.
Lauzon had been a replacement for Northern Ireland’s Norman Parke, who withdrew from the event due to an injury.
UFC 180 takes place Nov. 15 at Arena Mexico. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. The event was scheduled to be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between champ Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum, but Velasquez suffered an injury that forced him to withdraw (http://mmajunkie.com/2014/10/cain-velasquez-out-mark-hunt-fabricio-werdum-set-for-interim-title-at-ufc-180). In his place goes Mark Hunt, who will take on Fabricio Werdum for the interim heavyweight title.
Lauzon recently picked up his second straight win after earning a TKO (doctor’s stoppage) over Michael Chiesa at UFC Fight Night 50 in Connecticut. Prior to his recent back-to-back wins, the 30-year-old was stuck in a 1-3 skid. With the Chiesa win, which netted “Fight of the Night” honors, Lauzon now has 13 fight-night bonuses, the most in UFC history. Going after his 14th will have to wait.
Sanchez, a longtime UFC fighter who first joined the UFC after winning “The Ultimate Fighter 1,” won one of MMA history’s most controversial split decisions (http://mmajunkie.com/2014/06/sanchez-pearson-decision-might-be-worst-in-mma-history-and-thats-saying-something) in June when he topped Ross Pearson in his home city of Albuquerque. That snapped a two-fight skid of decision losses to Myles Jury and Gilbert Melendez for the 32-year-old former title challenger.
With the change, the latest UFC 180 card now includes:

Mark Hunt vs. Fabricio Werdum – for interim heavyweight title
Jake Ellenberger vs. Kelvin Gastelum
Diego Sanchez vs. TBA
Dennis Bermudez vs. Ricardo Lamas
Edgar Garcia vs. Hector Urbina
Jessica Eye vs. Leslie Smith
Chris Heatherly vs. Augusto Montano
opponent TBA vs. opponent TBA – “TUF: Latin America” featherweight final
opponent TBA vs. opponent TBA – “TUF: Latin America” bantamweight final

The Spanish language fight site Indiscutido broke the story - just a day after Joe Lauzon was out of UFC 180 with an injury, his opponent Diego Sanchez is out with an LCL injury. Lauzon in turn had replaced an injured Norman Parke.
The main card of the event also suffered a dramatic change when UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez likewise was forced out by injury. Challenger Fabricio Werdum now fights Mark Hunt for the interim title.

Ah check. Dat zou wel wat verklaren.

@mario.
