A middleweight title fight between champ Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort is likely headed to Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Feb. 28, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation today told MMAjunkie.

The UFC informed the California State Athletic Commission of the possible date, though the promotion has yet to submit a formal event request for what is likely to be UFC 184, according to CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster.

“I’ve heard a few things about this, but I’ve received absolutely nothing in writing,” he said.

After an initial postponement due to injury, the middleweights were expected to clash in Las Vegas sometime early in 2015, and Belfort agreed as a condition of his licensure that he wouldn’t fight anywhere else.

But according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the UFC couldn’t secure a venue for the proposed date and informed the commission it was moving the fight to California.

“It was negotiated and I think we worked it out that he’s going to be able to fight over there,” NSAC Executive Director Bob Bennett told MMAjunkie. “We had things ready to go (with Belfort), and then we had conversations with Andy ensuring that out-of-competition testing will take place.”

A Feb. 28 date in Los Angeles could mean yet another dual event day for the UFC. The promotion earlier this year announced plans for a return to London’s O2 Arena on Feb. 28. That event, if it goes forward, likely would stream in full on UFC Fight Pass in the States, while the UFC 184 event would air on pay-per-view, FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

MMAFighting.com first reported the event’s likely move. Stay tuned to MMAjunkie for more on the story as it develops

Belfort not drug tested since July hearing

Chris Weidman @ChrisWeidmanUFC
wow! Thought he's been getting tested countless times. Hasn't been tested once since fight announcement 3 months ago!?
In July Vitor Belfort appeared before the Nevada Athletic Commission and was told he would be licensed to fight UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman in Las Vegas as early as December, subject to stringent drug testing. However, Weidman was injured in September, and the fight was tentatively rescheduled for California, early in 2015.
Although he has made his availability at all times known to the NAC, to date Belfort has yet to be tested.
On Wednesday, Ariel Helwani spoke to NAC executive director Bob Bennett, who said he currently has no plans in place to randomly test Belfort because the UFC recently informed the commission that the Weidman vs. Belfort fight would probably take place in California next year. Bennett also said the commission had yet to test Belfort, despite the fact that the title fight was official for two months before Weidman had to pull out.
Bennett was confident that California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster "will spearhead" the Belfort testing, if the fight does in fact end up in California.
Foster then told MMAFighting.com that the UFC informally informed him of their current plan to hold the fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, however, they have yet to officially make that request.
Foster said his tentative plan is to test Belfort three-to-five times randomly before the fight, as well as the night of the event. He also plans on making Belfort pay for all drug testing costs "as a condition of licensure."

Foster also said he has not determined the extent to which Weidman will be tested. Weidman has of course never failed a drug test.
Weidman and Belfort are believed to be fighting at UFC 184 in Los Angeles at the Staples Center on February 28.
