Werdum: I imagine I'll beat Cain on the ground, like I did Fedor

It was announced yesterday that Fabricio Werdum (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/f/584DB7540A5C83D4/Fabricio-Werdum/) will fight Cain Velasquez (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/f/C2080A16A554CE39/Cain-Velasquez/) at UFC 188 (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=news.search&phrase=UFC%20188) to unify the heavyweight title. Werdum won an interim title fight when Velasquez sat on the shelf injured, but is looking forward to the fight and believes he will finish Velasquez, most likely on the ground:

“I imagine not just the fight, but also my interview with Joe Rogan, and what I’ll be saying,” he said. “I think about all that. What I want is to finish the fight early, whether it be with a knee, a knockout, a high kick or a submission. I imagine it will be on the ground, just like when I beat Fedor.”
Velasquez is known as an aggressive striker and expert in ground and pound, but given Werdum’s reputation as a submission artist, it’s not unreasonable to think the champ might want to keep the fight standing. Werdum said he’s heard as much, but isn’t so sure Velasquez is worried about one aspect of the matchup.
“Many people have said that Cain Velasquez (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/f/C2080A16A554CE39/Cain-Velasquez/) won’t be playing his usual game, that he’ll avoid the ground,” he said. “I think he won’t avoid the ground. I think he’ll do his usual game, which is to strike on the feet, go for a takedown, and stay on top. But I’ve always felt at ease when doing jiu-jitsu.

A trip to Mexico City nearly cost UFC interim heavyweight title Fabricio Werdum (http://mmajunkie.com/tag/fabricio-werdum) his life before it brought the biggest accolade of his career.
With a second trip now set for the mountainous city, Werdum said he has no qualms about returning, despite the challenges it presented.
“If I have to spend two, three months there and (almost) die again, I’ll do it,” he said. “I’m bringing this belt home, one more time, with much pride. I always say that I represent Brazil and I’m very proud to be gaucho.”
Gaucho is the term for the natives of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Werdum (19-5-1 MMA, 7-2 UFC) was born in the capital city of Porto Alegre, which just two days ago hosted a UFC event where he spoke at a fan Q&A.
The interim champ will be a long way from home when he meets undisputed titleholder Cain Velasquez (13-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC) in the headliner of UFC 188, which takes place June 13 in Mexico City.
The two were supposed to meet this past November at UFC 181, but Velasquez suffered an injury (http://mmajunkie.com/2014/10/cain-velasquez-out-mark-hunt-fabricio-werdum-set-for-interim-title-at-ufc-180)that robbed the event of some of its luster and forced the promotion to put up an interim title. In the first week of training for the high-altitude headliner, Werdum was poisoned with carbon monoxide when a teammate brought a generator into the house where they were training. A doctor said he would have died if he hadn’t woken up feeling ill. The entire team went to the hospital.
Werdum made the best of it. He recovered and finished out his camp before going on to finish Hunt with spectacular flying knee and punches.
Although Velasquez is of Mexican-American descent and is expected to receive a hero’s welcome, Werdum said fans haven’t forgotten him in Mexico City. After all, the two spent a great deal of time on camera together as opposing coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America,” and Werdum is a Spanish-language commentator for the UFC.
“I have a great following in Mexico,” he said. “They know me well. I know that the crowd will be 80/20 percent in his favor. That only motivates me. I’ve always been the underdog, to tell the truth. And that motivates me to prove the opposite. I know I can, and I’ll do it.”
Some of Werdum’s biggest career highlights are upsets – a one-sided drubbing Travis Browne in a title eliminator, and his unforgettable triangle choke of Fedor Emelianenko under the now-defunct Strikeforce banner.
Werdum said he always visualizes his fights, from the actual combat down to the post-fight interview, and he sees a repeat of his signature win.

Ik denk ook dat hij een grote kans heeft op de grond, maar Cain is niet zo hersenloos als Fedor om na een close-call met een droge triangle secondes later precies dezelfde fout gaat maken. Cain zal snel merken dat hij met zijn ground en pound heel voorzichtig moet zijn en dan zal hij zich snel aanpassen. Waarschijnlijk staand houden en/of weer de kooi gebruiken.

Ik zie Werdum zeker winnen van Cain. Vond Werdum de laatste vijf gevechten juist stand-up ook erg sterk. Gun het Werdum ook zeker! Klaar met die blessures, drugs en smoesjes.

Werdum zal de hele kooi doorgeworsteld worden en regelmatig met zijn rug tegen de kooi gedrukt staan. Vanuit de clinch krijgt hij de ene na de andere poffer op zijn kop te verwerken.
Dat is niet zozeer wat ik hoop maar wel wat ik verwacht.

enkele kans. Zou het al superknap vinden dat Werdum 25 minuten blijft staan. Ook dat is maar een kleine kans.
Die Cain is zo verschrikkelijk goed, alleen jammer dat hij het veel te weinig laat zien.
