LAS VEGAS – You can go ahead and start making your plans now for next year’s “International Fight Week.” It has its anchor, and it’s another landmark.
UFC 200 will take place July 2, 2016, in Las Vegas – at the city’s new and still under-construction venue, MGM-AEG Arena, just west of MGM Grand Garden Arena.
UFC President Dana White made the announcement today at the UFC Fan Expo, which took place at Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas. No fights have been announced for the card.
“Every year, we just want to make this thing bigger and bigger,” White told fans at the expo after announcing the plans for the card.
Construction on what currently is called MGM-AEG Arena began a little more than a year ago. The finished facility will hold upwards of 20,000 fans for MMA and boxing events, as well as concerts. The venue sits just behind the New York-New York casino.
When the arena was announce in May 2014, White told MMAjunkie that he had been promised the ability to hold the first sporting event in the venue (http://mmajunkie.com/2014/05/dana-white-ufc-will-christen-375-million-las-vegas-arena-will-likely-add-sin-city-dates).
This year’s “International Fight Week” has Saturday’s UFC 189 as its anchor event with Conor McGregor vs. Chad Mendes in the headliner. Past UFC pay-per-views in the early July time period, around the Independence Day holiday, have included UFC 175, which saw Chris Weidman beat Lyoto Machida in a middleweight title bout; UFC 162, which saw Weidman upset Anderson Silva; UFC 148, a rematch between Silva and Chael Sonnen; and, of course, the landmark UFC 100 in July 2009 – heretofore the best-selling pay-per-view in UFC history.

One Of Ronda Rousey’s Coaches Says He Doesn’t Want Her To Fight At UFC 200

Perhaps the only thing more shocking than seeing Ronda Rousey laid out by Holly Holm at UFC 193 (http://uproxx.com/sports/2015/11/holly-holm-ronda-rousey-knockout-ufc-193/) was seeing how she reacted to defeat. Covering her face as she passed through LAX on the way home, Rousey disappeared from public view for weeks. When ESPN was granted access for a special feature, (http://uproxx.com/sports/2015/12/ronda-rousey-heartbroken-mess-falling-apart/) it revealed a devastated woman coming to grips with the feeling of letting everyone down.
Things weren’t just a mess for Ronda mentally. At the time of the interview, Ronda still had stitches in her lip and admitted that she “may not be able to eat an apple in six months, let alone fight.” (http://uproxx.com/sports/2015/12/ronda-rousey-apple-fighting-six-months/) One person that agrees with her in this assessment is her nutrition coach, Mike Dolce. Here he is telling MMA Junkie Radio what he thought (http://mmajunkie.com/2015/12/mike-dolce-i-dont-want-to-see-ronda-rousey-fight-at-ufc-200) of the UFC’s plan for a UFC 200 rematch in July:

“No way – absolutely not. Personally, it makes absolutely no sense for any athlete who is TKOd. … They need a minimum – a minimum – of three months no contact. And then they need another three-month period of light contact just getting back into the gym again. That puts us at six months, which is May (2016). And then you get into more intense training. That’s even before training camp kicks in.”

“I hear the quotes, and they’re running a business, so that’s right for the business, for sure,” he said. “Ronda will probably get paid more money if she fights on UFC 200 as opposed to UFC 204 or 206 or whatever happens because that will be the bigger event, the biggest, most stacked card, and she’ll get the pay-per-view points as a result of that.
“But this isn’t about money. From our perspective, it’s about the health and safety of the athlete.”

Speaking as someone who has covered the sport of MMA since 2006, all I can volunteer is the fact that tons of fighters have taken the same sort of damage, if not worse, and come back sooner than the eight months Rousey would have. I’m not saying it was the right or wrong thing for these men and women to do … but a lot of them did it, and no one made a huge deal about the timing when they did.

That being said, injury layoffs like this are obviously on a case by case basis. Only Ronda and her team know exactly how hurt she was by that kick to the head, whether she suffered a concussion or had her jaw seriously damaged. That one comment about the apple sounded bad, and it is definitely worth asking whether the UFC is trying to push Rousey back sooner than they should to bolster their marquee UFC 200 card.

So what will it be? Will Ronda recoup and return to the cage by July, or will she listen to those around her who worry it is too soon? The UFC already has the Rousey vs Holm rematch penciled in for UFC 200, so you know which way they’re leaning. It’s going to be up to Ronda Rousey to put her foot down and call off the fight if she doesn’t think she can make it.

Coach says Conor McGregor not waiting for UFC 200, wants lightweight title next

Conor McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/7/jose-aldo) at UFC 194 (http://www.mmafighting.com/fight-card/681/ufc-194-aldo-mcgregor) in spectacular fashion and now people are asking what's next for the newly minted undisputed featherweight champion. During the press conference Conor didn't reveal much on his plans, but says he wants to balance title bouts in two divisions. Now, his coach John Kavanagh has laid out more details on what they're thinking at the moment.

"I do think the next one will be lightweight for the belt," Kavanagh told MMA Fighting (http://www.mmafighting.com/2015/12/14/10123202/coach-conor-mcgregor-considering-lightweight-title-fight-in-april). "Maybe that's going to be around April. March, April -- something like that. ... Maybe that and then July, UFC 200 (http://www.mmafighting.com/fight-card/746/ufc-200). Maybe he'll defend the featherweight belt against Frankie on that card."
"He's never gonna wait until July," Kavanagh said. "Even if I was to suggest it or encourage it, I know it's a pointless effort."

Dana White (http://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/2230/dana-white) earlier suggested that McGregor drop the featherweight belt if he plans to challenge for the lightweight title. McGregor shut down that idea (http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2015/12/13/10021898/ufc-194-mcgregor-no-way-in-hell-i-vacate-belt-when-i-move-up?_ga=1.224328283.1316089814.1435047869), which was also reiterated by his coach on this show as well.
"Everybody's time will come," he said. "Everybody will get their shot against him. People have to be a little patient, but it definitely will come."
