This week Jon Jones (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/fighter/Jon-Jones:54494EFC3CC798A0) joined 'Tiki and Tierney on CBS Sports Radio (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/news/search?search=CBS%20Sports%20Radio)' to preview UFC 197, talk about his legal issues, his Twitter beef with Chuck Liddell, and his fight with Daniel Cormier (http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/fighter/Daniel-Cormier:53958F286CF4E375):
On how he's changed: "New level of maturity, new level of focus, new level of professionalism. Ready for the 2nd half of (my) career."
On his past issues: “I don’t think I handled (the limelight) the best that I could have. I matured on the slow side. So to have things end with that car accident and getting my belt stripped away, I think it’s the way my life has gone and I’ve grown so much from it. I can’t even really have any regrets. I just need to be grateful for the ups and the downs and be grateful for the ability to grow and mature and just go through life and get that experience under my belt. I’m grateful for my past. It’s making me who I am today and I’m really happy with the person I am today. That’s life.”
On how to gain his fans back: “I don’t worry about it too much. With time, people will come around. The people that I’ve lost will come around. All I have to do is continue to do the right things, continue to develop and make positive life changes, continue giving back and trying to help others and continue winning. At the end of the day, everything will take care of itself.”
If he'll be rusty after over a year away from the Octagon: “I’ve never really taken this much time off, so I don’t know how I’ll react to it. I believe it won’t be an issue for me because of the mental approach I take to fighting. I’m a guy who’s really big into visualization, meditation. I spend a lot of time in the mind, and because of that, I have a lot of confidence in the way I will react when the fight starts.”
On why he hates Cormier so much: “I definitely don’t hate the guy. We don’t like each other because we’re both really elite in our sport. We’re at the highest level you can get when it comes to being a UFC fighter. He’s only lost to me. I’ve never lost to anyone. So I know that he’s a capable guy (who can) possibly defeat me. He knows that I can defeat him because I’ve already done it. There’s just a competitiveness there that only we can bring out of each other.”
On fighting Cormier: “This guy consumes my mind all day long. Everything I do has been focused on him. I’ve been thinking about this guy over a year. Every single day I think about him.”
On the recent twitter beef with UFC Legend Chuck Liddell: “We should have a healthy, respectful relationship. But I’m like, ‘You keep calling me out. I want to respect you for what you did, but if you want to be competitive, I’m going to call you out.’ It’s going to make me look like a**hole for calling out a legend, but let’s call it what it is. I’ll beat that ass.”
As for Tate, she absolutely obliterated Ronda Rousey and questioned (more doubted) her heart:
If she thinks she can beat Rousey this time: “Oh yea, 100%... I look at the way that Ronda lost and I have to wonder, ‘Is she ever going to come back the same?' And to me, I don’t think so.”
On Rousey's heart and motivation: “Ronda likes things to go the way she wants them to go. It’s awesome when you’re winning and have the world at your fingertips, but now not only does she lose in brutal fashion, but she also wanted Holly to beat me and now that’s not happening, so now I don’t if she’s going to have a whole lot of true motivation coming back. She’s making movies, she’s in love with Travis (Browne) and really interested in having have his kids or whatever"
On Rousey coming back from brutal loss: "Whenever I’ve been down and out, my motivation was to come back and be better, stronger, bigger, faster . . . and I haven’t heard her say that one time. I don’t recognize that comeback warrior. I recognize that ‘I’m in it to win it and if I’m not in it to win it, I’m done. I don’t want to lose and learn from it.’ And that’s not how this sport goes.”
