With three straight losses on his record, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis has decided to shake things up.

Pettis (18-5 MMA, 5-4 UFC) today revealed his plan to drop down a weight classes to featherweight, a division he has never competed in over the course of his more than nine-year, 23-fight professional career.

“Showtime” announced the move on his official Instagram account. MMAFighting.com reported he will enlist the services of nutritionist Mike Dolce to oversee the weight cut.

Although Pettis, No. 8 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA lightweight rankings, doesn’t come across as particularly undersized at 155 pounds, the idea of shaving 10 pounds off his frame for competition isn’t exactly foreign to him at this point.

Pettis, 29, was announced for a drop to featherweight three years ago when he was booked to fight former featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 163 in August 2013. Pettis suffered injury training for the fight, though, and ultimately Chan Sung Jung replaced him against Aldo.

Shortly thereafter, the UFC granted Pettis a title shot at lightweight, which he won with a first-round submission of Benson Henderson at UFC 164. He defended it once before he ran into Rafael dos Anjos and lost the belt by dominant unanimous decision at UFC 185 in March 2015.

From there, it’s been straight downhill for Pettis. After taking time off to recover from a broken orbital bone from the dos Anjos fight, Pettis returned at UFC Fight Night 81 and lost a razor-thin split decision to Eddie Alvarez. He made a quick turnaround for UFC 197 in April, but delivered a lackluster performance and was outstruck by Edson Barboza, who took a unanimous decision.

Despite spending some time at Jackson-Wink MMA in Albuquerque prior to the Barboza fight, the Pettis that was known for producing a highlight-reel in essentially every fight failed to show up. That clearly sparked something in his mind, because Pettis seems to believe the fix will come through dropping weight off his frame.
