Michael Chiesa out at UFC Fight Night 91, UFC seeks new opponent for Tony Ferguson

A high-profile lightweight contest between two top contenders has been scrapped, as Michael Chiesa (14-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) has been forced to withdraw from UFC Fight Night 91.

UFC confirmed officials that the promotion is now seeking a replacement opponent for Tony Ferguson (20-3 MMA, 10-1 UFC) willing to step in on a little more than two weeks’ notice.

Back troubles forced Chiesa out of the fight, and Cheisa took to Facebook to say he’s hoping eight weeks of rehab will be enough for him to heal.

To my family, friends and fans. As reported below, a back injury has forced me out of my scheduled fight for July 13th against Tony Ferguson. During a routine training session, I felt a pop and shift in my lower back followed by very very sharp pains that left me on the floor.

I found out today I have a fully ruptured disk, I will undergo 8 weeks of physical therapy and rehab to hopefully avoid having to go under the knife and get back surgery. Thanks to everyone that supports me, my teammates and coaches, the city of Spokane and all my fans around the world. I’ll be back stronger. – Mav

UFC Fight Night 91 takes place July 13 at Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. The main card airs live on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sport 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

It’s familiar territory for Ferguson, who was expected to face Khabib Nurmagomedov at this past December’s The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale card, only to see his opponent injured and replaced by Edson Barboza. Ferguson and Nurmagomedov were then slated to meet again at April’s UFC on FOX 19 event, but “El Cucuy” was the one who had to withdraw.

“Maverick,” who won season 15 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, has become one of the most dangerous submission threats at 155 pounds. His six UFC wins by rear-naked choke are the second most in company history, just one shy of Kenny Florian’s all-time record of seven.

With the change to the card, UFC Fight Night 91 now includes:
Tony Ferguson vs. opponent TBA
John Lineker vs. Michael McDonald
Tim Boetsch vs. Josh Samman
Alexey Oleinik vs. Daniel Omielanczuk
Keita Nakamura vs. Kyle Noke
Ben Nguyen vs. Louis Smolka
Ryan Hall vs. Alex White
Cortney Casey vs. Cristina Stanciu
Sam Alvey vs. Eric Spicely
Matthew Lopez vs. Rani Yahya
Devin Clark vs. Alex Nicholson
Scott Holtzman vs. Cody Pfister

Ryan Hall vs. Alex White featherweight bout scrapped from UFC Fight Night 91 in Sioux Falls

More changes have arrived for the UFC’s debut event in South Dakota next month.

A featherweight bout between Ryan Hall (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Alex White (11-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) has been scrapped from the UFC Fight Night 91 lineup due to a White injury.

UFC officials recently announced the news and said Hall will not get a new opponent for the card.

UFC Fight Night 91 takes place July 13 at Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. The main card airs live on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. On Tuesday, the main event changed to a bantamweight bout between Michael McDonald and John Lineker after a featherweight fight between Tony Ferguson and Michael Chiesa was scrapped with a Chiesa injury. Ferguson remains on the main card against Landon Vannata.

Hall hasn’t competed since December, when he won Season 22 of “The Ultimate Fighter” with a unanimous decision win over Artem Lobov.

White has been part of the UFC roster for more than two years and has split wins and losses over his four-fight tenure. His most recent octagon appearance also was against Lobov. He outworked “The Russian Hammer” over three rounds for a unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 82 in February.

With the change to the card, UFC Fight Night 91 now includes:

John Lineker vs. Michael McDonald
Tony Ferguson vs. Landon Vannata
Tim Boetsch vs. Josh Samman
Alexey Oleinik vs. Daniel Omielanczuk
Keita Nakamura vs. Kyle Noke
Ben Nguyen vs. Louis Smolka
Cortney Casey vs. Cristina Stanciu
Sam Alvey vs. Eric Spicely
Matthew Lopez vs. Rani Yahya
Devin Clark vs. Alex Nicholson
Scott Holtzman vs. Cody Pfister

Lineker-McDonald now headlines UFC Fight Night 91, Tony Ferguson gets Landon Vannata in co-main

With the Monday announcement that a Michael Chiesa injury would scrap the planned main event for UFC Fight Night 91 next month, the UFC acted quickly to right the ship.

Tony Ferguson (20-3 MMA, 10-1 UFC), who was set to meet Chiesa (14-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) in the lightweight main event, will stay on the card against UFC newcomer Landon Vannata (8-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC). But Ferguson now will slide down to the co-main event.

Moving up into the headlining spot is a bantamweight fight between Michael McDonald (17-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) and John Lineker (27-7 MMA, 8-2 UFC). UFC officials announced the changes today.

UFC Fight Night 91 takes place July 13 at Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. The main card airs live on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Vannata, a New Jersey native who trains at the Jackson-Wink MMA camp in Albuquerque, N.M., has started his pro career a perfect 8-0 with seven stoppage wins. In April, he stopped Ramico Blackmon in the first round. His highest-profile fight to date was a first-round TKO of Chad Curry this past November at RFA 32.

McDonald, currently ranked No. 8 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA bantamweight rankings, returned from more than two years on the sidelines with a come-from-behind submission of Masanori Kanehara at UFC 195 in January. The bout was his first since a December 2013 guillotine choke submission loss to Urijah Faber at UFC on FOX 9.

Lineker won his second straight fight since returning to bantamweight and fourth consecutive bout overall with a unanimous decision victory over Rob Font at UFC 198.

Mooi dat Ferguson een tijd geleden Khabib nog afbrandde omdat hij het tegen een debutant opnam toen hij zelf uit viel...

Lauren Murphy vs. Katlyn Chookagian added to UFC Fight Night 91 in Sioux Falls

The UFC’s debut event in South Dakota, less than two weeks away, has another fight for the lineup.

Former Invicta FC bantamweight champ Lauren Murphy (9-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has been added to the card against promotional newcomer Katlyn Chookagian (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC). UFC officials recently made the new booking official for UFC Fight Night 91.

UFC Fight Night 91 takes place July 13 at Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. The main card airs live on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Murphy won Invicta’s 135-pound title in 2013 with a TKO win over Miriam Nakamoto, which kept her unbeaten at 8-0. She vacated the belt in 2014 to sign with the UFC, but dropped her debut with a split-decision setback against former title challenger Sara McMann at UFC Fight Night 47. SHe followed that up in April 2015 with a loss to another former title challenger, Liz Carmouche.

But in February, she got back in the win column in a big way at UFC Fight Night 82 in Pittsburgh. There, the Phoenix-based fighter stopped Kelly Faszholz late in the third round with a TKO, and the victory earned her a $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus award.

The 27-year-old Chookagian, who trains with Renzo Gracie on the East Coast, will put her unbeaten record on the line. In her seven wins, she has three stoppages. Four of her wins have come under the New Jersey-based CFFC banner, including a 45-second knockout of Stephanie Bragayrac at CFFC 57 in March. In September 2014, she picked up a knockout win over Brigitte Narcise at WSOF 13, her lone fight for that promotion.

With the addition to the card, UFC Fight Night 91 now includes:

John Lineker vs. Michael McDonald
Tony Ferguson vs. Landon Vannata
Tim Boetsch vs. Josh Samman
Alexey Oleinik vs. Daniel Omielanczuk
Keita Nakamura vs. Kyle Noke
Ben Nguyen vs. Louis Smolka
Katlyn Chookagian vs. Lauren Murphy
Sam Alvey vs. Eric Spicely
Cortney Casey vs. Cristina Stanciu
Scott Holtzman vs. Cody Pfister
Matthew Lopez vs. Rani Yahya
Devin Clark vs. Alex Nicholson
