Jussier Formiga faces Dustin Ortiz in flyweight bout at UFC Fight Night 95 in Brazil

A flyweight bout between Jussier Formiga and Dustin Ortiz is the latest addition to September’s UFC Fight Night 95 lineup.

UFC Fight Night 95 takes place Sept. 24 at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. The card airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass, though the bout order hasn’t been finalized.

Formiga (18-4 MMA, 4-3 UFC), No. 5 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA flyweight rankings, is coming off a split decision loss to former title challenger Henry Cejudo at UFC Fight Night 78 in November. A victory could have earned him a title shot, but instead it snapped the 28-year-olds three-fight winning streak against Wilson Reis, Zach Makovsky and Scott Jorgensen. Nonetheless, he’ll have the chance to get back on track when he fights in his native Brazil for the fifth time in his UFC tenure.

No. 10-ranked Ortiz (15-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) most recently suffered a unanimous decision loss to Reis at UFC on FOX 18 in January. It’s been an up and down past few years for Ortiz, 28, because he’s alternated wins and losses over his past four octagon appearances with his most recent victory being a come-from-behind TKO of Willie Gates at UFC Fight Night 73 in August 2015.

The latest UFC Fight Night 95 card now includes:
Cristiane Justino vs. Lina Akhtar Lansberg
Renan Barao vs. Phillipe Nover
Erick Silva vs. Brandon Thatch
Michinori Tanaka vs. Rani Yahya
Mike De La Torre vs. Renato Moicano
Paul Felder vs. Francisco Trinaldo
Alan Patrick vs. Stevie Ray
Jussier Formiga vs. Dustin Ortiz

Anzai vs. Chagas and Luque vs. Urbina latest additions to UFC Fight Night 95 in Brazil

The card for UFC Fight Night 95 has come together quickly and the UFC has announced two more bouts for the event.

Shinsho Anzai (9-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will face Luan Chagas (14-1-1 MMA, 0-0-1 UFC) and Vincente Luque (9-5-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) will battle Hector Urbina (17-9-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in a pair of welterweight bouts.

The bouts were announced on the official UFC Brasil twitter account.

The event takes place Sept. 24 at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia. It airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass, though the bout order hasn’t been finalized.

Anzai picked up his first octagon victory in his most recent bout, defeating Roger Zapata at UFC Fight Night 75 due to TKO via hand injury. Prior to the victory over Zapata, Anzai had a six-fight winning streak snapped when he lost by TKO to Alberto Mina in his UFC debut.

Chagas became the rare fighter to battle to a draw in his octagon debut when he faced Sergio Moraes at UFC 198. He has now fought 10 consecutive bouts without suffering a loss.

Luque is riding a two-fight winning streak after dropping his first UFC bout. In his most recent bouts, he submitted Hayder Hassan and Alvaro Herrera by anaconda choke and brabo choke, respectively.

Urbina had a two-fight winning streak snapped in his most recent outing, losing a decision to Bartosz Fabinski at UFC Fight Night 78. The loss was also his first in the UFC after submitting Edgar Garcia at UFC 180 in his first bout for the promotion.

The latest UFC Fight Night 95 card now includes:
Cristiane Justino vs. Lina Akhtar Lansberg
Roy Nelson vs. Antonio Silva
Renan Barao vs. Phillipe Nover
Erick Silva vs. Brandon Thatch

Roy Nelson vs. Antonio Silva added to UFC Fight Night 95 in Brazil

A bout between veteran heavyweights has been added to the UFC’s return trip to Brazil.

Officials today announced Roy Nelson (21-13 MMA, 8-9 UFC) and Antonio Silva (19-9-1 MMA, 3-6-1 UFC) have joined UFC Fight Night 95’s lineup.

The event takes place Sept. 24 at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia. It airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass, though the bout order hasn’t been finalized.

Nelson is currently in 1-4 skid and could be fighting for his job. After a three-fight skid that included losses to Mark Hunt, Josh Barnett and Alistair Overeem, the 40-year-old rebounded with a decision victory over Jared Rosholt. However, in his most recent bout, the former IFL champion and “The Ultimate Fighter 10” winner suffered a split-decision defeat to Derrick Lewis. He now heads to Brazil for the first time in his 12-year pro career.

Silva, a 36-year-old Brazilian, also is in a rut and is 1-5-1 in his past seven bouts. The former Strikeforce fighter and ex-EliteXC champion has suffered four knockout losses in his past five fights, including recent first-round defeats to Hunt and Stefan Struve. The latter lasted just 16 seconds.

Injuries force several changes to UFC Fight Night 95 in Brasilia

Injuries force several changes to UFC Fight Night 95 in Brasilia

Next month’s UFC Fight Night 95 event in Brazil has undergone a trio of changes, the UFC has announced.

Brandon Thatch (11-4 MMA, 2-3 UFC) is out of his welterweight fight with Erick Silva (18-7 MMA, 6-6 UFC). Luan Chagas (14-1-1 MMA, 0-0-1 UFC) will move up to fight Silva because his opponent, Shinsho Anzai (9-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC), is out with an injury.

Renato Moicano (10-0-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has been forced out of his featherweight fight against Mike De La Torre (14-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and will be replaced by Godofredo Pepey (12-4 MMA, 4-4 UFC).

And Joaquim Silva (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is out of his lightweight fight against Gegor Gillespie (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and will be replaced by Glaico Franca (13-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC).

UFC Fight Night 95 takes place Sept. 24 at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. The card airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

After finally putting together his first winning streak in the UFC with submissions of Mike Rhodes and Josh Koscheck, long-time prospect Silva has suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in his career. Nearly a year ago in Canada, he dropped a split decision to Neil Magny. Then in March, he was knocked out by Nordine Taleb at UFC 196 in an upset. Chagas became the rare fighter to battle to a draw in his octagon debut when he faced Sergio Moraes at UFC 198. He has now fought 10 consecutive bouts without suffering a loss.

De La Torre bounced back from a TKO loss to Maximo Blanco 13 months ago and took a split decision from Yui Chul Nam this past November in South Korea. Pepey will be trying to rebound from a unanimous decision loss to Darren Elkins at UFC on FOX 21 in July in Chicago. The setback snapped a three-fight winning streak.

Gillespie will be making his UFC debut and will be trying to stay unbeaten in his pro career. After six straight-first-round finishes under the Ring of Combat banner on the East Coast, the New Yorker finally had to go the distance for a win over Sidney Outlaw in June, when he took a split decision. Brazil’s Franca had a three-fight winning streak snapped in April when he lost a decision to James Vick at UFC 197 – his first setback in the UFC.

With the changes, the latest UFC Fight Night 95 card now includes:

Cristiane Justino vs. Lina Lansberg
Renan Barao vs. Phillipe Nover
Roy Nelson vs. Antonio Silva
Paul Felder vs. Francisco Trinaldo
Gilbert Burns vs. Michel Prazeres
Mike De La Torre vs. Godofredo Pepey
Michinori Tanaka vs. Rani Yahya
Jussier Formiga vs. Dustin Ortiz
Vicente Luque vs. Hector Urbina
Glaico Franca vs. Gregor Gillespie
Luan Chagas vs. Erick Silva
Alan Patrick vs. Stevie Ray
Pedro Munhoz vs. Justin Scoggins

Thiago 'Marreta' Santos vs. Eric Spiceley heads to UFC Fight Night 95 in Brasilia

The UFC’s return to Brazil next month has one more fight added to the lineup and with 14 bouts likely is filled.

Thiago “Marreta” Santos (13-4 MMA, 5-3 UFC) will fight in front of his home fans against Eric Spicely (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in a middleweight matchup. UFC officials recently announced the new booking for UFC Fight Night 95.

UFC Fight Night 95 takes place Sept. 24 at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. The card airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

Santos had a four-fight winning streak snapped in July when Gegard Mousasi took him out with a first-round TKO at UFC 200. Prior to that, he had rebounded nicely after losing two of his first three in the promotion. He had first-round knockout wins over Andy Enz at UFC 183, Steve Bosse at UFC Fight Night 70 and Nate Marquardt at UFC 198, as well as a decision over Elias Theodorou at UFC Fight Night 80. His head-kick KO over Bosse was a fight-night bonus winner.

Spicely started his career 8-0, all for the East Coast-based CES MMA promotion. Seven of his first eight wins came by stoppaged, and six of those came in the first round. But in his promotional debut against Sam Alvey at UFC Fight Night 91 in July, he was submitted with a first-round guillotine choke for the first setback of his career.

With the addition, the latest UFC Fight Night 95 card now includes:

Cristiane Justino vs. Lina Lansberg
Renan Barao vs. Phillipe Nover
Roy Nelson vs. Antonio Silva
Paul Felder vs. Francisco Trinaldo
Gilbert Burns vs. Michel Prazeres
Mike De La Torre vs. Godofredo Pepey
Michinori Tanaka vs. Rani Yahya

Vicente Luque vs. Hector Urbina
Glaico Franca vs. Gregor Gillespie
Luan Chagas vs. Erick Silva
Alan Patrick vs. Stevie Ray
