CES MMA will return to Connecticut next month, and its next card will include a pair of UFC veterans squaring off at featherweight.
Levan Makashvili (11-2-1) will take on Sean Soriano (9-4) at CES MMA 38, promotion officials today announced. In addition, a featherweight bout between Calvin Kattar (15-2) and Chris Foster (9-4) was announced, as was a flyweight fight featuring Carlos Candelario (4-0) vs. Brandon Warne (1-1).
CES MMA 38 will take place Sept. 23 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. The main card will air live on AXS TV. No main event for the card was announced, though all three fights are expected to be part of the main card.
After an 8-0 start to his career, Soriano signed with the UFC. But his time there, over a little more than a year, didn’t go as planned. He dropped all three of his fights with the promotion – by submission to Tatsuya Kawajiri, decision to Chas Skelly and submission to Charles Rosa – and was released. After a first-round knockout of Josh Quayhagen at Legacy FC 48 this past November, he was stopped with a third-round TKO by Thomas Webb in March at Legacy FC 52, leaving him in search of a trip back to the win column.
Makashvili went 1-1-1 during his three fights in the UFC. After a split-decision win over Mark Eddiva in May 2015 in his promotional debut, he dropped a split call to Hacran Dias at UFC Fight Night 70. After a majority draw with Damon Jackson in January, he found himself looking for work outside the promotion. He found it at CES MMA 36, where he got his hand raised by unanimous decision against Ryan Sanders.
“This is going to be a fight where we stand and bang,” Soriano stated. “He comes in with some wild hooks, and I don’t step back against anyone. It’s going to be exciting. There are going to be a lot of fireworks at Foxwoods.”
Kattar will bring a seven-fight winning streak into the event – a streak that stretches back to 2010. In April, after nearly three years away, Kattar fought Kenny Foster at CES MMA 34 and took a split decision. Foster will be fighting in front of his home state fans in Connecticut and will be looking to build on a decision win over Vovka Clay at Bellator 153 in April. That got him back on track after a split-decision loss to Saul Almeida a year prior at WSOF 20.
