Ex-champs Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum likely to meet at UFC 207

Cain Velasquez will likely get his rematch with fellow ex-UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum in December.

Werdum (21-6-1 MMA, 9-3 UFC) and Velasquez (14-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC), respectively No. 2 and No. 3 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings, are targeted for a long-awaited rematch at UFC 207.

The fight isn’t signed but has been offered to the competitors, according to people close to both camps who requested anonymity because they aren’t authorized to discuss the booking publicly.

UFC 207 takes place Dec. 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. As with other major year-end UFC events, it airs on pay-per-view.

Velasquez, knowing current heavyweight titleholder Stipe Miocic (16-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) has requested some time off following his recent title defense over Alistair Overeem (41-15 MMA, 6-4 UFC), actually proposed the bout during Wednesday’s edition of “UFC Tonight”

The proposed Velasquez vs. Werdum rematch comes less than a week after Werdum’s co-main-event win at UFC 203 over Travis Browne (18-4-1 MMA, 9-4-1 UFC), who stepped in for injured Ben Rothwell at this past Saturday’s pay-per-view event at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Werdum afterward requested a title shot against Miocic. However, the champ instead said he’s hoping for a break after three fights in 2016, leaving the promotion to queue up his second title defense.

In this case, Werdum would get a likely title-eliminator after losing the title to Miocic at UFC 198, which was his first attempted title defense after capturing the belt from Velasquez at UFC 188.

Werdum and Velasquez previously were set for an immediate rematch at UFC 196 in February, but the injury bug once again bit Velasquez, and he was forced to withdraw. One day later, Werdum withdrew citing an injury, and the entire fight card was downgraded to a FS1-televised event, UFC Fight Night 82. (UFC 196 was pushed to March and wound up hosting the first blockbuster fight between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.)

Interestingly, Werdum’s UFC 203 win over Browne comes two months after Velasquez stopped the same opponent – in the first round at UFC 200 – to rebound from his title loss to Werdum.

Staand wel. Op de grond geef ik Rousey met haar judo achtergrond toch het voordeel. Maar wat timing betreft maak je wel een goed punt. Tegen Holm ging het bergafwaarts naarmate de partij langer duurde (de ronde langer duurde haha). Rousey is niet gewend om langere partijen te draaien en dan kan ze het gaan afleggen.

Two significant welterweight bouts have been ended to the year-end UFC 207 lineup.

Former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks (17-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) will take on Neil Magny (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) while former Strikeforce champ Tarec Saffiedine (16-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) meets Matt Brown (20-15 MMA, 13-10 UFC).

UFC officials tonight announced both matchups.

UFC 207 takes place Dec. 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Hendricks, No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA welterweight rankings, will attempt to snap the first two-fight losing skid of his career when he returns to the octagon following back-to-back defeats against Kelvin Gastelum and Stephen Thompson earlier this year. The former 170-pound champion has lost two of three fights since dropping the title to Robbie Lawler at UFC 181 in December 2014, and even missed weight prior to his UFC 200 loss to Gastelum.

No. 13-ranked Magny also aims to get back in the win column after he had a streak of 10 wins in 11 fights suddenly halted with a first-round stoppage courtesy of Lorenz Larkin at UFC 202 in August.

Saffiedine has also struggled, but UFC 207 will mark the first time since 2010 that the Belgian fighter has competed three times in a calendar year. He picked up a unanimous decision victory over Jake Ellenberger at UFC on FOX 18 in January before dropping a fight on points to Rick Story at UFC Fight Night 88 in May.

Brown, meanwhile, is perhaps in need of a victory more than any of the recent UFC 207 additions. “The Immortal” has come out on the losing end of four of his past five octagon appearances, albeit to elite competition in Ellenberger, Demian Maia, Hendricks and Lawler. He most recently competed at UFC 201 in July, succumbing to a quick first-round TKO defeat against Ellenberger.

Ray Borg vs. Louis Smolka booked for UFC 207 in December

A pair of flyweights looking to rebound from recent disappointing losses has been added to UFC 207.

The Las Vegas Review Journal first reported that Ray Borg and Louis Smolka have agreed to meet at the Dec. 30 event, which takes place at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. UFC officials subsequently confirmed the booking.

Smolka is currently ranked No. 14 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA flyweight rankings. Borg checks in just behind at No. 15.

“Da Last Samurai” Smolka (11-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC), a 25-year-old Hawaiian, had built an impressive four-fight winning streak before being shocked by Brandon Moreno at October’s UFC Fight Night 96, losing by first-round submission.

“The Tazmexican Devil” Borg (9-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) is just 23 years old but already boasts five fights under the UFC banner. Most recently, Borg saw a three-fight winning streak snapped with a loss to Justin Scoggnis at February’s UFC Fight Night 82 event.

UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz meets Cody Garbrandt in UFC 207 co-headliner

“No Love” will get his shot at the UFC bantamweight belt.

UFC officials today confirmed with ESPN that, as expected, Dominick Cruz (22-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will put hit title on the line against Cody Garbrandt (10-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in the co-feature of UFC 207, which takes place Dec. 30 at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

The main card of UFC 207 airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass. In the main event, former champ Ronda Rousey tries to recapture the women’s bantamweight title when she returns from a layoff in excess of a year to meet new champ Amanda Nunes.

Cruz currently sits at No. 1 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA bantamweight rankings, while Garbrandt is No. 7.

Garbrandt has been pining for a title shot ever since he knocked out Thomas Almeida in the first round of the UFC Fight Night 88 main event in May, taking a fight-night bonus in the process. He didn’t get it after that, but further stated his case in August when he shut down former WEC bantamweight title challenger Takeya Mizugaki in just 48 seconds with a big TKO.

Cruz has not lost a fight in nine-and-a-half years. It’s been 13 straight since then, though that run has been punctuated with plenty of layoffs due to injury. He became the UFC’s first bantamweight champion after the merger with the WEC and beat Faber and Demetrious Johnson, who went on to become the UFC’s long-reigning flyweight champ.

But after the win over Johnson in October 2011, he was out for nearly three years with knee injuries. He was stripped of his bantamweight title, which eventually was claimed by Renan Barao, then Dillashaw. After a bonus-winning 61-second knockout of Mizugaki when he finally returned in September 2014, Cruz was sidelined for another 16 months.

But he returned in January to challenge Dillashaw and beat him by split decision in a “Fight of the Night” winner. And at UFC 199 in June, he defended the belt in a trilogy fight with Faber, the last man to beat him, moving to 2-1 against “The California Kid.”

Ik vind de pre breakdowns altijd interessant, wat mij opvalt is dat je de laatste tijd een aantal vechters hebt die hun stand tijdens het stoten steeds verwisselen om angles te creeren wat ook voor veel verwarring zorgt. Cruz is daar een meester in tel daar ook nog zijn uitstekende voetwerk bij op, de alpha males zoals dillashaw faber zijn er ook goed in, belfort verraste zijn tegenstanders weleens ermee, in het kickboksen moet ik denken aan andy ristie en in het boksen kan ik mij herinneren dat mike tyson het vaak deed als hij zijn rechterhoek gooide

Despite a quick 48-second loss, Ronda Rousey was the top earner at UFC 207.


Rousey (12-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC), who was no match for women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes (14-4 MMA, 7-1 UFC), earned a flat disclosed payday of $3 million. Nunes, meanwhile, earned $200,000 – $100,000 to show and another $100,000 as a win bonus.


MMAjunkie obtained the list of disclosed payouts from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversaw Friday’s pay-per-view event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.


Rousey earned 64 percent of the event’s total disclosed payout of $4,683,000.


Other top earners included new bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt (11-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) and fellow co-headliner Dominick Cruz (22-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC). Both fighters earned flat payouts, with Garbrandt, who picked up a unanimous-decision victory, earning $200,000 and Cruz $350,000.
