Some heavyweight vets will headline the UFC’s return to Halifax.
Officials today announced former champion Junior Dos Santos (18-4 MMA, 12-3 UFC) will rematch Stefan Struve (28-8 MMA, 12-6 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night 105 main event.
UFC Fight Night 105 takes place Feb. 19 at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The rare Sunday card airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass, though the bout order hasn’t been finalized.
Dos Santos, who’s No. 4 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings, first defeated unranked Struve via 54-second TKO at UFC 95 in 2009.
Dos Santos, a 32-year-old Brazilian, has alternated wins and losses over his past seven fights, which included a dominant unanimous-decision win over Ben Rothwell in April. He’s now looking for his first back-to-back wins since 2012, when he won the title from Cain Velasquez and then posted his first title defense with a victory over Frank Mir – both via knockout.
Struve, meanwhile, was in a 1-3 skid that included a brief layoff due to a heart condition. However, the 28-year-old 7-footer has gotten his career back on track, and he now looks for his third straight victory following stoppage wins over Antonio Silva (“Performance of the Night”) and Daniel Omielanczuk in his two most recent bouts.
Other bouts announced for the card include welterweights Nordine Taleb (12-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio (23-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and bantamweights Reginaldo Vieir (13-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC) vs. Aiemann Zahabi (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC).
The latest UFC Fight Night 105 card now includes:
Junior Dos Santos vs. Stefan Struve
Cezar Ferreira vs. Elias Theodorou
Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Nordine Taleb
Jack Marshman vs. Thiago “Marreta” Santos
Alvaro Herrera vs. Alessandro Ricci
Reginaldo Vieira vs. Aiemann Zahabi
