As the much of the United States and the world shelters in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the UFC’s schedule resumes starting with UFC 249 (https://www.mmafighting.com/fight-card/1094/ufc-249-khabib-vs-ferguson).
That’s according to UFC President Dana White (https://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/2230/dana-white), who outlined a bold plan that includes weekly fights, a private island and longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan (https://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/2232/joe-rogan).
In a Monday interview with TMZ (https://www.tmz.com/2020/04/06/dana-white-ufc-249-private-island-fights-joe-rogan/), which followed the announcement of UFC 249’s new headliner and the final 12-fight card (https://www.mmafighting.com/2020/4/6/21209211/ufc-announces-updated-lineup-for-ufc-249-andrade-vs-namajunas-2-still-co-headlines) for the April 18 pay-per-view event, White kept the location of the event under wraps, as he has since questions of its viability swirled in the media. But he said the venue is set, and he’s “setting up shop here” for two months.
“We’re gonna be pumping out fights every week,” White said.
White said the UFC’s temporary home will host U.S.-based fighters who aren’t barred from traveling domestically, unlike several international fighters who were shut out of the April 18 event because they were unable to fly stateside.
For those fighters, White said, they’ll be squaring off in a venue that’s closer to the stuff of action movies than the actual plan of a multi-billion dollar fight promotion.
“I’m also a day or two away from securing a private island,” White said. “I have a private island that I’ve secured. We’re getting the infrastructure put in now, so I’m gonna start doing the international fights too with international fighters. Because I won’t be able to get international fighters, all of them into the US, so I have a private island and I’m gonna start flying them all into the private island and doing international fights from there. ... We have all our own planes and everything.”
One international fighter White isn’t taking issue with is UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (https://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/1480/khabib-nurmagomedov), the highest profile casualty of the pandemic shutdown. Nurmagomedov said he was unable to travel from his native Russia to make a fight with Tony Ferguson (https://www.mmafighting.com/fighter/538/anthony-ferguson) after getting shut out of Abu Dhabi, which he said the promotion originally targeted as UFC 249’s location.
Nurmagomedov defended himself against critics (https://www.mmafighting.com/2020/4/1/21203328/khabib-nurmagomedov-releases-statement-status-ufc-249-khabib-still-has-to-fight-that-what-you-saying) who felt he should brave the global pandemic for the fight. And unlike several occasions where pay-per-view headliners were scratched at the last minute, White went to bat for his champion.
“Khabib was caught in the middle of this thing as the world continued to change, day by day, and I was trying to book venues,” White said. “It’s not Khaib’s fault – it’s not anybody’s fault. This is something you could never prepare for, plan for, or even dream that any of this is possible.”
Nurmagomedov hasn’t been the only target of critics. Multiple media outlets have called the UFC’s rush to return to business a foolhardy and dangerous exercise, citing medical experts who’ve urged the public to shelter in place to avoid the spread of the highly contagious virus.
White has alternately defended his promotion’s safety record and attacked his critics. But for the first time since addressing the coronavirus threat, he appeared to indicate the promotion would rigorously test everyone involved in the event, which doesn’t include spectators.
Exactly what kind of testing will be employed remains unclear at the moment. As the coronavirus has spread, the U.S. has lagged behind other first-world countries in the availability and accuracy of testing. But the promoter declared everyone at the event would be protected.
“Everybody is going to be pre-tested and tested and tested,” White said. “We’re going to make sure that 100 percent healthy athletes, healthy athletic commission people, healthy judges, referees, my production people, that everybody there is healthy. We’re going to make sure that everybody is safe before, during and after the fights.”
Safety concerns appeared to be at the center of Rogan’s stance on commentating at UFC 249 when he said “it’s not gonna be me.” But White said that wasn’t what the popular broadcast personality really meant.
“They heard him writing on a podcast, so they start writing stories off the podcast that are full of sh*t,” he said. “Rogan will be there.”
As of Monday night, the promotion is well underway with rebooking fighters who were left off the originally scheduled UFC 249 card or were scheduled for future events. Several MMA managers and fighters MMA Fighting spoke to still did not have an idea of where they are fighting. But they didn’t plan to miss out.

Toch geen UFC 249. En terecht. Ik mis sportevenementen behoorlijk, maar dit was te gek voor woorden. Dana moest echt teruggefloten worden.
Ik vond het wel een tof idee. Beetje entertainment in deze dagen is toch niet weg.

Disney is de eindbaas
Naar het schijnt de gouverneur. Die heeft Disney gebeld toen Dana niet wilde luisteren.
Als je nog wat wilt in een staat is het niet handig om ruzie te hebben met de gouverneur dus die waren snel om.

Ik denk dat Bigi Boy hem sloopt op alle fronten in het staande gevecht en dat Ngannou op een paar verdwaalde maaiers niets te vertellen heeft. Hoewel ik hem wel heel groot vind lijken vergeleken met Bigi.
Als ik het goed begrijp wordt het nu wel gewoon uitgezonden ;) gelukkig maar ;)
Dit lijkt me wel weer een leuke event ;) Ik heb ook het idee dat veel partijen elke kant op kunnen gaan.
Ferguson vs gaetje lijkt me 50/50 . Ik hoop op ferguson maar Gaethje kan erg veel hebben en slaat erg hard, dus die maakt toch wel kans denk ik.
Ik denk dat cruz wel de betere vechter is, maar het is maar afwachten hoe die terug komt van weer lange tijd lay off ;)
Ngannou vs rozenstruik is denk ik ook 50/50.
Verder denk ik dat kattar, hardy, cerrone, werdum, waterson, luque, rosa en span gaan winnen.
Ben benieuwd hoe veel ik er dit keer weer fout ga hebben ;)
Word het uitgezonden op Veronica/SBS9 dan ?? In de tv gids staat namelijk niets vermeld.
Dit is uiteraard een evenement wat elke liefhebber graag wil zien... zeker in deze sportloze tijd.

Ik heb er wel zin. Tijd geleden dat ik op zondagochtend met oortjes in en kinderen op de achtergrond een flinke beukpartij heb zitten kijken - :)

Ik had veel meer verwacht van rozenstruik. Eerste ronde goed in verdediging en technische met veel lowkicks.2de ronde het sloopwerk .Zat ik er daar effe naast.

Hype train is gestopt. Mooie knock out voor Ngannou.
Van Ferguson had ik het niet verwacht, voorlopig geen titelpartij tegen Khabib.
Ik had niks anders verwacht dat Francis ze kop van ze romp af zou slaan.
Tegen Alistair had ie zwaar mazzel,met alle respect hoor.
Elke vechter krijgt uiteindelijk een keer een partij die een ommekeer in zijn carrière is en dit is die partij voor Ferguson denk ik. Deze hoeveelheid klappen weg koppen doet wat met je lichaam. Hij is gewoon 25 minuten lang gesloopt. Die staat in July niet tegen Khabib.

Tony vs Khabib ging er nooit komen, is al te vaak mislukt. En nu Gaethje eindelijk z'n verstand gebruikt, is het echt een gevaarlijke klant. Zou hem nu graag tegen Conor zien. En dat zou Gaethje accepteren, ookal zegt ie enkel Khabib te willen...

Tony vs Khabib ging er nooit komen, is al te vaak mislukt. En nu Gaethje eindelijk z'n verstand gebruikt, is het echt een gevaarlijke klant. Zou hem nu graag tegen Conor zien. En dat zou Gaethje accepteren, ookal zegt ie enkel Khabib te willen...Denk toch wel dat hij oprecht alleen tegen Khabib wil.. hij wil die belt. Daarna eventueel pas Conor. Maar als hij puur voor het geld ging, had hij die interim belt niet gelijk weggedaan... Hij gaat voor de titel, en als hij die heeft, kan hij natuurlijk ook veel meer vragen voor een partij tegen Conor..
Als hij die belt wint is dan Conor wel een logische stap? Die lijkt voor de trilogie tegen Diaz te gaan. Daarna een title shot lijkt me wat overdreven.
Ik zou zeggen dat Khabib-Justin de volgende op de agenda is. Interessante pot want Justin schijnt een top worstelaar te zijn. (van horen zeggen).
Tony is voorlopig even uit de picture want die heeft teveel klappen gehad. Als hij ooit nog terug komt op zijn leeftijd.
Qua ranking zou Conor tegen Dustin moeten maar dat is geen money fight. DE enige manier om dat voor elkaar te krijgen is ze op dezelfde kaart te zetten en bij het uitvallen van Khabib of Justin de opengevallen plek aan Conor te geven. Dat risico wil hij wel lopen denk ik.

Degene die het meest indruk heeft gemaakt is Trevor Wittman
Wat de combinatie goed maakt is dat Justin ook coachbaar is tijdens de partij. Tijdens de training alles goed ingeslepen door een topcoach en tijdens de partij de aanwijzingen direct uitvoeren zonder nadenken. Korte duidelijke instructies.
Als je dat vergelijkt met Struve die alles is vergeten wat hij heeft geleerd zodra de scheids de partij begint en een Schreiber die uit de top van zijn longen dingen roept te schreeuwen dan is dat het verschil tussen prima en top.
Dat heeft Alistair nooit meer terug gekregen toen hij bij Golden Glory weg ging.
