UFC 49 Payroll Breakdown
By Jeremy Wall [9.03.04 - 12:35 AM EST]

I was finally able to send a fax to the Nevada State Athletic Commission regarding the fighter purses for UFC 49. The chart below is broken up into three columns, with the fighter's name, what their guarantee was for the fight, and what their winning bonus was (which of course was only paid to them should they be fortunate enough to win). An asterisk is marked beside the winning bonus of fighters who weren't able to collect because they lost. The chart is ordered from highest total pay down to lowest. Here they are:

NAME GUARANTEE BONUS TOTAL
R. Couture $150,000 $75,000 $225,000
C. Liddell $60,000 $60,000 $120,000
V. Belfort $100,000 $40,000* $100,000
M. Lindland $20,000 $20,000* $20,000
Y. Edwards $7,000 $7,000 $14,000
D. Terrell $3,000 $5,000 $8,000
J. Thomson $6,000 $6,000* $6,000
N. Diaz $6,000 $5,000* $6,000
J. Eilers $3,000 $3,000 $6,000
C. Lytle $3,000 $3,000 $6,000
K. Parisyan $3,000 $3,000 $6,000
M. Kyle $4,000 $4,000* $4,000
V. White $4,000 $4,000* $4,000
J. Riggs $2,000 $2,000 $4,000
R. Jhun $3,000 $3,000* $3,000
J. Doerksen $2,000 $2,000* $2,000

Total Payroll: $534,000
Total Guarantees: $376,000
Average purse (guarantee and bonus):$33,375
Average Guarantee: $23,500

The total was relatively in line with the other UFC shows this year, with UFC 48 having a total payroll of $586,000, UFC 47 having a total payroll of $333,000, and UFC 46 having a total payroll of $540,500. Every match aired on pay per view, so there was no payroll wasted on dark matches. The payroll for dark matches at UFC 48 was $26,000 (dark matches being fights that did not air on the pay per view).

The average purse of $33,375 was slightly down from UFC 48's $36,625, up from UFC 47's $20,812 (they did a great job of managing money at UFC 47) and down very slightly from UFC 46's $33,781.

The average guarantee of $23,500 was way down from UFC 48's average guarantee of $31,654, up from UFC 47's $15,688, and down from $27,031 at UFC 46. The difference between the average guarantee and the average purse for the event was 29.6%. There was an overall drop of 8.9% in payroll from UFC 48 to UFC 49.

The payroll for UFC 49 represented 41.3% of the gate, down from the terrible 65% of UFC 48's gate which that event's payroll chewed up, but up from 23.1% for UFC 47 and slightly up from 39.2% for UFC 46.

Here is a chart breaking down all of these figures for each event:

EVENT TOTAL PAYROLL TOTAL GUARANTEES AVERAGE PURSE AVERAGE GUARANTEE
UFC 49 $534,000 $376,000 $33,375 $23,500

UFC 47 $333,000 $249,000 $20,812 $15,688
UFC 46 $540,500 $431,500 $33,781 $27,031
