PRIDE TARGETS MIDDLEWEIGHT GRAND PRIX IN 2005

Maxfighting's Scott Petersen reports from Japan that while Pride focuses on the October and the New Year's Eve show, they have already laid the groundwork for the Pride Middleweight Grand Prix. MMAWeekly has learned that there are already a few names being kicked around for the Middleweight Grand Prix that might take place in February.

As we reported yesterday Royce Gracie is a fighter that Pride is interested in for the tournament. Petersen reports that they plan on having an eight man tourney. In addition to Gracie, talk is that Hayato Sakurai, Carlos Newton, and a UFC fighter, not under a long term deal with Zuffa are possibilities for the Middleweight GP.

If the tournament does in fact start in February, then it could conclude in either April or May. This is in the early stages but the idea is that the first round and quarterfinal round would take place in one night, while two months later the semi-final and final would take place. $200,000 dollars on the line for the winner according to MMAWeekly.com.
