Euphoria Fighter: Spain's DAVID GAONA
Submitted by: Keith Mills
Posted On 10/03/2004

On October 15th Euphoria MFC returns to Atlantic City, New Jersey for a card that so far has floored most fans, especially those of the Lightweight fighters. Former HOOKnSHOOT Welterweight Champion and ADCC News #2 ranked Lightweight Yves Edwards, former HOOKnSHOOT Lightweight Champion and #9 ranked Hermes Franca, former Shooto Champion Joakim Hansen, former KOTC Champion and Abu Dhabi North American trials runner-up Alberto Crane…this tournament is on the verge of ridiculously packed with top talent as a fighter the level of Rich Clementi is “only a UFC vet!

And the alternate bracket? The first fight of the night is Team Quest shooting star Ryan Schultz against David Gaona from SHOOT Spain. Not much is known about Gaona other than he is one of several international fighters on this card, a fact itself which makes this show stand out. On the verge of his big break we caught up with David by e-mail.

KM: You are fighting Ryan Schultz at Euphoria MFC. What do you know about Schultz? DG: The fact that he is a member of Team Quest assures that he is an excellent fighter. He is, also, a very experienced fighter.

KM: What do you think of fighting him? DG: I am very proud and satisfies me a lot facing such a good fighter.

KM: All I found on you on the internet as far as MMA is one fight against Augusto Frota. I saw on the shootfightingspain.com you are the European Pankration runner-up. Can you tell us more about your background? DG: Really, my activity is centered more on my job as an Instructor than in Competition. On the other side, Augusto Frota is the official representative of Rodrigo “Minotauro in Europe and that was my first fight at MMA, because before this I had only fought in Pankration.

KM: How are you training for this fight? DG: I train with the other partners of my Team and I follow the habitual routine that our coach Alejandro Iglesias imposes us. I have excellent training partners in our Team such as, Daniel Tabera, M-1 Champion and he stays UNDEFEATED; Tulio Palhares, UFC-Brazil Champion; Julián González, 3 x Ultimate Combat Champion or Javier Garcia, who is the most experienced Spaniard in MMA. I must thank all of them their support and help during the training.

KM: I think this is your first fight in the US. Ever been here before? What are your thoughts on returning/coming to the States? DG: This is the first time I go to the US and I am very excited. I am very happy because of that and I must thank his confidence to Miguel Iturrate, Euphoria MFC matchmaker, for having selected me as for taking part at his event.

KM: I think the time zone difference between Spain and New Jersey is six hours. Do you think this is a factor and if so how are you planning on adjusting? DG: I am not worried for that at all. I will fight wherever, however and against anyone.

KM: Please tell us what it is like being a fighter in Spain. How far do you have to travel to see or fight in a show? Are there a lot of fans or are you on your own? Can a fighter in any martial art (including boxing etc) make a living at competition? DG: I think it is not important the fact of talking about Spain or any other country. I really think that it is very hard to make a living at competition in any country of the world. I have the luck of being Instructor in the IVAD, the Biggest MMA Center in the world and as for that I am an MMA professional because I only make a living at fighting. But I consider that it is really hard to make a living at MMA and as for that every people who try it have all my admiration and respect.

KM: In the US we haven’t seen any fighters in MMA from Spain. I’ve seen Daniel Tabera in Russia twice but don’t recall any others. Do you think the world has been overlooking Spain? DG: Team S.H.O.O.T. represents the IVAD at MMA events all over the world. We are the MMA pioneers in Spain and our team takes part at approximately at one international event per month in different countries because we don´t take part at any event in our country. As regards Daniel Tabera, who you saw in Russia twice (I think one of them fighting against Gilbert Yvel), he will take part at Euphoria MFC at the event on December and we are very excited for this.

KM: What does being from Spain mean to you regarding this next show?
Do you feel you are representing Spain or just your gym/team? DG: Of course, I will represent both. I am very proud because of this!

KM: Any sponsors to thank or anything else to get across to the fans? DG: Yes, I want to thank my Instructor, Judá Palmero for all his support and to you, Keith, for being so kind and interview me. Thank you.

Fedor Emelianenko MAKES A STOP ON THE ROAD TO THE TITLES
PRIDE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION TO ATTEND EUPHORIA

Atlantic City, New Jersey -- PRIDE Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko makes a stop on The Road To The Titles in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Red Devil Fight Team stand out will attend Euphoria at the Tropicana Casino and Resort on Friday, October 15, 2004. When asked why he would take time away from training for his upcoming PRIDE fight, Emelianenko replied, "I look to support a quality production" in Euphoria. This will be the first visit to the United States for the 28-year-old who won the title in March 2003, ending the 3-year undefeated streak of Antonio Rodrigo Noqueira.

Euphoria looks to bring world class fighters to their ring "one day maybe I fight in Euphoria," said Emelianenko, from his home in St. Petersburg, Russia. The European and World Sambo champion shows he believes Euphoria has great potential by personally attending the first round in a series of tournaments to crown Euphoria champions.

Euphoria fans will have an opportunity to meet one of the hardest hitters in the sport of MMA at an autograph session scheduled before the start of the fights.

Judges must evaluate mixed arts techniques, such as:

Effective Striking

Effective Grappling

Ring Control

Effective Aggressiveness/Defense

Evaluations shall be made in the order in which the techniques appear above, giving the most weight in scoring to effective striking, grappling, ring control and aggressiveness/ defense.

* Mixed Martial Arts Techniques are defined below as:

Effective Striking: The total number of legal heavy strikes landed

Effective Grappling: he successful execution of a legal takedown and/or reversal including the following maneuvers:

___Takedowns from standing position to mount position

___Passing the guard to mount position

___Bottom position fighters using an active, threatening guard

Ring Control: Dictating the pace, location and position of the bout using the following maneuvers:

___Countering a grapplers attempt at takedown to remain ___standing and legally striking effectively;

___Taking down an opponent to force a ground fight:

___Creating threatening submission attempts pass the guard to ___achieve mount, while on the ground:

Effective Aggressiveness/ Defense: Moving forward and landing a legal strike, while avoiding being struck, taken down and/or reversed while performing the maneuvers described above.

**OBJECTIVE SCORING CRITERIA

10-10 Round

1.When both contestants appear to be fighting evenly and neither contestant shows clear dominance in a round;

2.When both contestants suffer equal numbers of legal knockdowns, takedowns, and strikes and neither shows clear dominance in a round.

10-9 Round

1.When a contestant wins by close margin, landing the greater number of effective legal strikes, grappling and other maneuvers;

2.When a contestant remains in the guard position with no fighter having an edge in striking or grappling, the fighter who scored the legal takedown wins the round.

10-8 Round

1.When a contestant overwhelmingly dominates by striking or grappling in a round.

2.When a contestant adversely affects his opponent by knocking him down from a legal strike, threatening submission attempts, throwing, legal striking while standing or grounded.

10-7 Round

1.When a contestant totally dominates by striking or grappling in a round.

2.When a contestant detrimentally affects his opponent by knocking him down from a legal strike, threatening submission attempts, throwing, legal striking while standing or grounded.

*******************

Judges should use a sliding scale and recognize the length of time the fighters are either
standing or on the ground, as follows:

* If 90% of a round was spent on the ground, then:

Effective Grappling is weighed first

Effective Striking is then weighed

* If 90% of a round was standing, then;

Effective Striking is weighed first

Effective grappling is then weighed

* If a round ends with 50% standing and 50% grounded, striking and grappling are weighted more equal.
