1. Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva (27-3-1)
If you fight Silva, you see the doctor. It's that simple. The awful experience begins with a world-renowned psychotic stare down, then Silva's dinner bell rings signifying the beginning of a short-lived predator/prey relationship. Then there's pounding, cutting and choking. Towels are thrown, doctors rush in, and the next question you're alert enough to ask is, "Can't this ambulance go any faster?" Silva's last 23 fights include only one decision loss to Tito Ortiz in April, 2000 and 16 consecutive wins. But Penn wasn't satisfied being the best at 155. He yearned for a new challenge. So what does he do? He moves up in weight to challenge the most dominant champion in MMA, Matt Hughes. Few experts gave Penn any chance at all. Fans called him crazy. In the face of all that, B.J. Penn showed up at UFC 46 and completely dominated Matt Hughes. He beat Hughes to the punch, defended the takedown, put Hughes on his back and then choked him out. Penn's skills are so well rounded that it's scary. When you combine elite takedown defense with knockout power and a blackbelt in jiu-jitsu, you create a fighter that's almost impossible to beat. And that's B.J. Penn. 3. Emelianenko Fedor (18-1)
Heavyweights don't typically find themselves on pound-for-pound lists, but Emelianenko Fedor is far from typical. Since suffering his only professional loss in December 2000, Fedor embarked on a reign of terror over Pride FC's and Rings's heavyweight divisions. With dominant wins over Antonio 'Minotauro' Nogueira, Kevin Randleman, Mark Coleman, Gary Goodridge, Heath Herring, Semmy Schilt, and Naoya Ogawa, there's only two names left for him to fight: Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic and Josh Barnett. Fedor's beaten everyone else. An unfortunate clash of heads in the finals of the Pride Heavyweight Grand Prix robbed fans of the opportunity to see Fedor and Nogueira fight to a conclusion in their much-anticipated rematch. Plans are in the works to have the two finish their battle at Pride's New Year's Eve spectacular. 4. Matt Hughes (33-4-0)
The 2-time UFC Welterweight Champion is a devastating combination of power and conditioning. He controls his opponents on the ground with his superior strength, while dropping deadly forearm and elbow strikes. On their feet, Hughes' opponents need to be watchful of his devastating body slams. Hughes was on a 12 fight winning streak before running into the B.J. Penn express at UFC 46. That loss to the top fighter in the world does nothing to diminish Hughes' dominance. After beating Charuto Verissimo (close decision) and Georges St. Pierre (armbar), Hughes reigns as the champion once again. A future date with Frank Trigg gives Hughes the opportunity to once again clean out the UFC's welterweight division. Last: Submission win (armbar) over Georges St. Pierre. 5. Randy Couture (13-5)
Where do we start? Only a year ago, Randy Couture looked to be on his way out of MMA after suffering back-to-back beatings by Josh Barnett and Ricco Rodriguez. After competing his whole career as a 225 pound heavyweight, Randy decided to move down to his more natural weight of 205 pounds and take on the UFC's LHW class. Well, in back-to-back fights he dominated Chuck Liddell (TKO) and out wrestled Tito Ortiz (UD). Unfortunately for Couture, he suffered a bizzare loss to Vitor Belfort after sustaining a severe cut to his eyelid from the first punch of the fight. Randy avenged that loss with a dominant win over Belfort at UFC 49. That sets the stage for a rematch with the Ice Man in a possible retirement match. 6. Dan Henderson(15-3-0)
Where do we start with "Hollywood" Henderson? This man rarely, if ever, reaches the 200 pound mark, yet he is quick to fight virtually any man at almost any weight. Hendo has world class wrestling skills to go along with a granite chin and a sledge hammer right hand. He was the first man to put a dent in the brilliant Minotauro's record. In his last two bouts, he summarily dispatched with former pound-for-pound king, Murilo Bustamante, by knockout in less than 2 minutes, and he followed that up with a dominant stoppage win against Kazuhiro Nakamura. Tito Ortiz calls Henderson the "Baddest 190-Pound Man on the Planet." That's good enough for us as Hendo makes his long-awaited, and much-deserved, debut on our pound-for-pound list.
