Showsport International in association with K-1 Fighting Network will staged Anarchy an MMA fight night at Aston Event Centre in Birmingham on Sunday 20th February 2005. The main event will feature England’s James Zikic a UFC and K-1 UK veteran he will face Holland’s answer to Mike Tyson the very aggressive Melvin Manhoef who started his career in Muaythai, turning to K-1 then finally MMA. Manhoef made his name in MMA with an epic battle against fellow Dutchman and freefight star Bob Schrijber. 2004 was a good year for James Zikic he almost caused an upset in the K-1UK tournament when he took the Champion Gary Turner two extra rounds but then loosing a questionable points decision. Zikic rallied with a string of victories including a win against Frenchman Matthias Ricco at Cage Rage 8 and more recently a stoppage of tough Russian Vasily Struchkov under K-1 Rules. Zikic is poised to step onto the heavyweight world stage Manhoef will be his first real test.
Valentijn Overeem’s rise to fame was highlighted by some impressive victories including the defeats of UFC Champion Randy Couture, Brazil’s Renato Babalu and the UK’s own Ian Freeman. Overeem a PRIDE veteran needs to get his career back on track and find the form that made him a champion standing in his way is England’s Ross Pointon. This is a big step up in class for Pointon a former two-time British San Shou Champion but he is undeterred saying his only worry is that Overeem doesn’t show up. Pointon switched from Shan Shou and Kickboxing to MMA where he has an undefeated record he also picked up a Gold medal at last years Gracie Jujitsu European invitational Championship. Pointon has the confidents of the under dog with nothing to lose and everything to gain.
A strong supporting card of MMA matches will feature Ross Mason, Paul Sutherland, Christian Smith, Joe Akano, Peter Hefford and Ronnie Mann.
Former WBO Intercontinental heavyweight Boxing Champion Pele Reid will face WAKO-PRO heavyweight Thaiboxing Champion Duncan Airlie James under K-1 Rules. Reid made his K-1 debut in 2003 loosing to Ray Sefo, despite the loss K-1 producer Mr.SadaharuTanikawa still considered Reid the best newcomer. A mixture of inexperience, bad preparation and plain bad luck saw Reid lose three fights back to back a very difficult learning curve. Reid now has to test his metal against domestic opposition and prove his worth if he wants to return to the K-1 World GP circuit. James who has competed on both K-1 UK and K-1 Japan events said ‘if Reid’s team think I am a stepping stone they are very wrong, I am coming to Birmingham with the intention of knocking Reid out, he will earn his money on the 20th February.
