Vargas to fight Joval
After a long injury plagued absence from the ring, Fernando Vargas will face tough veteran Raymond Joval in his March 26 return fight in Corpus Christi, Texas. "He's fighting a true middleweight," Main Events Vice President and matchmaker, Carl Moretti, said. "Joval's record is 33-3, he had a solid amateur career and I think it's a real good test for Fernando coming back."

Vargas tix going fast!
Tickets went on sale today for Fernando Vargas' return against Ray Joval at the American Bank Center Arena in Corpus Christi, Texas. If early ticket sales are an indication, Vargas is still one of the most popular fighters in the game. In the first four hours, over $100,000 in tickets were sold. Tickets range from $25 to $100

Dougie’s FAT Feroz Mail Bag
By Doug Fischer (March 3, 2005)

http://www.maxboxing.com/media/Feroz_main_hogan.jpg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fernando Vargas has not fought since December of 2003 and his last significant fight was his dramatic loss to Oscar De La Hoya in 2002. And even though back injuries sidelined Vargas and put his career in question in 2004, “El Feroz is back, healthy, and with new trainer Danny Smith in his corner, ready to tackle the top names in the sport once again.

Needless to say, the Ferocious One still commands attention when he speaks and his ability to bring out the best and the worst in boxing fans remains constant. Four weeks before his comeback bout vs. Raymond Joval, fight fans respond with a mixture of excitement, admiration, skepticism, and venom to a recent article on Vargas. Read on and enjoy!

VARGAS ON THE WAY BACK

Hello Dougie I just read your interview with Vargas and I enjoyed it very much.I hope Vargas comes back and is successful, but I think he is right when he says that Tito is big name draw over Wright. I would like to see Vargas and Wright fight again. I think he will be champion again. Write back let me know you opinion on his future. Oh yeah Vargas does talk a lot of smack, but he is an exciting fighter to watch and he puts behinds in the seats. — eduardo

Vargas sounds good. I haven’t seen him in person yet (he looks sharp in the video), but I think he will take care of business on March 26, and I hope he follows-up with that WBC title win he wants so bad because he can make for some bigtime fights at 154 pounds. I’d pay to see Nando vs. Mayorga, Mosley, De La Hoya or Wright. Those are all great fights.

FEROZ SOUDS GOOD, BUT HOW DOES HE LOOK?

How would you compare the way vargas is lookin now to the way he's looked in the recent past? He looked real sharp in that video.— Larry

Judging by the way he was hitting those pads – with speed and technical accuracy – I’d say he’s looking better than he did in his two post-De La Hoya fights in ’03 (Fitz Vanderpool and Tony Marshall). But the mitts don’t hit back, Larry. I’m guessing the year layoff will recharge Nando’s batteries in much the same way the time out of the ring was beneficial for both Felix Trinidad and Kostya Tszyu, but we won’t know if he can really become a major a player in the game again until we see how he reacts to taking a solid punch.

“PUNCHY

Read your article on Vargas. I liked it very much. But he is punchy. I've seen his last few interviews; the poor kid will be in a lot of trouble in a few years. It's the price of the game, but it is the price. I commend you for not having pushed the issue with him. There is a fine line between journalistic integrity (i.e. confronting him on the "punchiness) and fear (i.e not confronting him on the "punchiness), but I sense you gave him a pass for his contributions and I respect that.— Leving

Nando sounded very clear and lucid on the phone. I talked to him for about an hour and there was no slurred speech, no drawn out words, no stuttering or stammering, no loss of words or incomplete thoughts. Perhaps the year off has given his body AND mind enough of a rest to heal.

I’ve seen this happen before. In the last interview I saw with Riddick Bowe (following his second DQ win over Andrew Golota) the former champ’s speech was so slow and slurred, I could not understand a word of it. But he’s sounded good in interviews I saw of him last year (I missed his appearance on FNF, Feb. 11th).

I’m gonna keep it real. I heard his speech get thicker and slower immediately following his losses to Trinidad and De La Hoya and I wrote that when asked about it in mail bags. But I don’t think Vargas is punchy. “Punchy is slang for pugilistic dementia, which is a serious condition. That’s the condition that Muhammad Ali and Bobby Chacon are in. Vargas isn’t there — yet. If he stays in the game beyond this year or takes another brutal beating, he could be well on his way, but I believe if he retired tomorrow or even at the end of this year (without engaging in a brutal contest) he will be able to live a healthy rest of his life. Despite those two losses to Trinidad and De La Hoya, he hasn’t taken near the amount of ring punishment that Ali, Chacon and most of the fighters who have made to the hall of fame absorbed during their careers.

GOOD INTERVIEW WITH FEROZ

You're right, he does sound ready. And sincere, not just the same ol' b.s. What do you think would happen in a Wright rematch? How did you score the first one? — John

I scored the first fight 7-5 in rounds for Vargas. It could have easily been a draw or 7-5 in favor for Wright. What would happen in a rematch depends on how much damage Wright absorbs versus Tito and what Vargas looks like vs. Raymond Joval. If they were to fight tomorrow I would have to go with Wright, who seems to be at his peak right now.

FEROZ IS FINISHED

He's Meldrick Taylor after Chavez destroyed him. Vargas is finished. After seeing him fight a "whip" in LA and some Telemundo fighter in Texas or Arizona, Vargas will never be a factor at 154. Weight, suspect chin, steroids abuse and prior beatings have destroyed him. He's like a rabbit, easy prey. He'll probably get by this "Jovial" guy and in his first real test, probably Mayorga for his swan song, he'll inevitably get KO'd.
Regardless, his input for the Wright/Trinidad fight gives good insight. At 2-1, Trinidad looks as good a pick as a Rahman 4-1 underdog against Vitali. I know you have little faith in the Rock because he either disappoints or disproves you, but Vitali has been Ko'd by Maskaev and some K-1 guy. So the notion that he can't be Ko'd cannot be equated. The Rock, when properly motivated as evidenced in his last outing against Meehan, can be a very live dog. .— Qncyk

Vargas losses to two future hall of famers in competitive fights and he’s done? Why does Rahman get a free pass with you? After being KTFO’d by Lennox Lewis, and somehow losing to both Evander Holyfield and John Ruiz, Rahman struggles with a fighter who actually IS done (Al Cole) and beats three stiffs in a row and now he’s the heavyweight heir apparent in your mind. OK. That makes a lot of sense. Klitschko lost to Maskaev in the amateurs. So what? Rock Head got KTFO’d (out of the freakin’ ring) by Maskaev in a real pro fight.

And you think Trinidad is a sure bet over Wright, a naturally bigger guy with who’s never been knocked out. Oooooo-kee-doki.

Are you willing to go on record — stating your real name and the town and state you live in — with your prediction that Vargas is, indeed, “finished or in your words “will never be a factor at 154? Because I want to start working know-it-all fans into my stories.

You see, I think Vargas will beat Joval (who is a solid middleweight) and I also think he can win the WBC title if he’s pitted against Javier Castillejo (who is no slouch, either). If he wins the WBC title you better believe that he is a “factor in the 154-pound division. When that happens, I want to put a section in my story on the fight that lists all the fans who thought he couldn’t do it; the sub-head to the section will be THEY WERE WRONG.

I don’t know if Vargas beats Mayorga, Mosley or Wright in a rematch, but I know he’ll make a fight of those bouts.

HATE VARGAS, LOVED THE ARTICLE

Hey Doug - I just finished reading your piece on Fernando Vargas. Now, I've got to let you know – I don't know a single Mexican boxing fan that hates Vargas as much as I do, but that was definitely a great article. A very fun read. Thanks .— HaglerFan (aka R. Garcia)

Thanks. The great thing about Vargas is that he’s one of those fighters, whether you love him or love to hate him, you watch when he fights and he usually delivers excitement. So if he’s healthy, he’s a welcome addition to the middleweight or 154-pound divisions this year.

GREAT ARTICLE

Dear Doug,
Great article on Vargas. You got to admire the guy. I would only want Mosley to beat him because I am a Sugar Man fan but I love Vargas because he is real. The game needs him. What he said about Wright is so true. If I was Wright I would fight Nando again just for the money alone and to avenge a loss. You are a great writer with fresh concepts and information. Keep up the good work. .— Aaron (Precise) Blount

Thanks for the kind words. I think Vargas vs. Mosley at the Staples Center would pack the arena and give fans a great fight.

VARGAS IS A COWARD

This guy is shot. If he's in such good shape...Why fight at 160 first? If he cares for his fans... Why mention Castillejo and not Ouma? Fact is, anyone who is anybody at 154 is either cleaning out the division or moving (up/down), while Vargas (like a buzzard) is only coming back to pick at the scraps. Question: IF WINKY LOSES TO TITO IS HE LOSING ALL HIS BELTS?.—JRM

Damn. And Vargas thought I drank a tall-ass glass of haterade one morning. You drank the entire pitcher, didn’t you?

“anyone who is anybody at 154 is either cleaning out the division or moving (up/down).

Bro, Mosley is moving down because he can’t beat Winky Wright. De La Hoya is moving down because he doesn’t want to fight Winky Wright. Vargas has gone on record saying that he is willing to fight Wright, who has stated that he’s not interested in that match anymore. Wright is not cleaning out the division (to do so, he would have to fight your boy Ouma, Travis Simms and Daniel Santos).

But I don’t blame Winky for going to 160 pounds and fighting Trinidad in a big money. The Floridian has earned his shot at glory and Tito is a peer of his.

Same deal with Nando. After his comeback fight with Joval, he’s looking at his peers (Castillejo, Wright, Mayorga, Mosley, De La Hoya, etc.) not new kids on the block like Ouma.

The guy’s been fighting at 154 since he turned pro. Why NOT fight at 160 if a title is not on the line? Vargas is a ’96 Olympian who fought the best welterweights and junior middleweights of the ‘90s and is one-half of one of the most successful PPV shows in history (Bad Blood w/ De La Hoya); Ouma just won his first world title last year and he fought on HBO for the first time this year. At this stage in his career, why the hell would Vargas be fighting Ouma? Sure, it would be a great fight and it would be a tremendous opportunity for Ouma, but what does Vargas get out of it aside from a lot of lumps and bruises? If you don’t think Nando has paid his dues by now, you never will. Vargas can put on fights that will be just as good as a fight with Ouma if he fights Mayorga and Mosley, but he’ll make at least three times as much money fighting those former champs than he would fighting the current IBF title holder.

There is no title on the line for Trinidad-Wright. It’s a middleweight fight and Wright holds the WBC 154-pound title (as well as The Ring’s championship belt, which he won’t be stripped of unless he elects to stay at 160 pounds after the fight).

LOVE FOR FEROZ

Doug: Man, the column and video about Vargas is the s__t. We really do miss him. Be sure to tell him that he not only got his Mexican fans but some Puerto Ricans too even though he talked smack about Tito after he loss. Still, I know it was just his pride talking and you can see in the video that he respects Tito and knows (first-hand may I add) the kind of fighter Tito is. Fernando, you are great also so keep it up.
Also, I remember the "punchy" mailbag. Man, I wouldn't have ever wanted to be in your position the day of the interview. I guess there should be an insurance plan for boxing writers that covers hospitalization. Anyway, since you know the guy for so long, I guess he went easy on you. (Just a couple of sparing rounds) Take care..— Bobby "Bobitongo"

Vargas calling me on my statement about his speech was uncomfortable, but it wasn’t as nerve racking as say when “Cool Vince Phillips and a crew of knuckle heads bum rushed me in the lobby of the MGM Grand a few years ago.

Thanks for the props on the story and the video, I think they complimented each other well. Vargas looks sharp on the mitts. I hope the hard work outside of the ring transfers to his fight with Joval next month.

I went to a local fight card Friday night (in Maywood, a small Southern California city that is about 99% Mexican), after the fights a bunch of MaxBoxing readers who run a well-known Mexican gym (Azteca, it used to be Julio Cesar Chavez’s favorite place to train back in the day) went to a Mexican restaurant to eat, drink Coronas and talk boxing for hours. Trinidad came up in the conversation over and over, and the young Mexican fight fans had nothing but respect for Tito. I’ve encountered similar situations when I’m in Puerto Rico where young fight fans there give a ton of respect to Fernando Vargas. I always thought one of the cornier things that El Feroz repeats over and over is: “Real recognizes real. I thought it was a silly Hip-Hop buzz phrase, but now I think I understand where the young man is coming from.
