Oei!

Bowe edges Zumbrun in controversial win!

April 8, 2005

By Ralph Gonzalez

Former world Heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe made few if any believers in his comeback bid as he barely edged out Ogden, Utah’s Billy Zumbrun in the main event at the Pechanga Entertainment Center in Temecula. The card was promoted by Goossen-Tutor and broadcast as part of Fox Sports “Best Damn Sports Show Period.

The split decision which read 95-93 Zumbrun and Bowe 96-92 (twice) was greeted with disgust by most of the 2,000 plus in attendance. Fightnews had the fight scored 95-93 for Bowe. The Brooklyn native scored a knockdown as he landed a brutal body shot in the fourth round and Zumbrun managed to get himself a point deduction for holding. “I was making the whole fight, said Bowe afterwards. “He would try to steal the rounds in the last few seconds but I was doing all the fighting. The fifth round was Zumbrun’s best as he corralled Bowe against the ropes and unleashed several heavy shots at the end of the round that shook Bowe and went uncontested. In the eighth, Bowe’s superior size and firepower were taking a toll on Zumbrun as he started retreating. The tenth was also a good one for Zumbrun as he landed more head snapping, dramatic shots just before the final bell rang. Jimmy Lennon Jr. announced the decision and immediate cries of anger were heard throughout the venue. Bowe is at this point a shadow of the once great warrior that battled Evander Holyfield in the early ninety’s.

Jirov blasts Neal!

Former cruiserweight champion Vassiliy Jirov knocked out Forrest Neal at 1:10 of the third round in a heavyweight clash. After an even and competitive first round, Jirov began pounding at Neal’s midsection which did damage right away. A straight right from Jirov dropped Neal for the first knockdown. Neal went down again from an overhand right that seemed to graze him. In the third Neal went down twice from body shots before the contest was waved over. Jirov improves to 34-3, 30 KO’s. Neal drops to 16-6, 12 KO’s.

Ward beats up Ashworth, wins by DQ!

2004 gold medal Olympian Andre Ward of Oakland beat up on Roy Ashworth of Lake Charles, Louisiana in a bout slated for four rounds. The first round was an ugly one as Ashworth charged out showing little respect for Ward’s abilities. The action got uglier as both men tangled up each other and trash talked with the faster Ward landing some hard body shots. In the second, Ward established his superior class by showcasing his speed and excellent foot movement. A round that clearly went his way. The third was all Ward as he landed blazing fast combos including a left uppercut that floored Ashworth. It was in this round that the over dramatic Ashworth tried to land some shots and practically ended up on top of Ward in an effort to land some cheap shots. They tangled up once again only to have Ashworth start punching Ward in the back of the head. It was at this point that referee Ray Corona stopped the fight and gave Ward the disqualification win. Time of the stoppage was 2:56 of the third. Ward improves to 3-0, 1 KO. Ashworth drops to 3-2.

Reynolds shuts out Ortiz!

Lorenzo Reynolds won a four round unanimous decision from Ramon Ortiz. Reynolds outclassed the scrappy San Diegan who managed to land a couple of good shots throughout the fight. The scores were 40-36 all the way across. Reynolds, a former Olympian improves to 4-0, 2 KO’s. Ortiz drops to 1-9-3.

Other results:

Heavyweight Travis walker wins a unanimous decision over Carl Davis with scores of 59-55, 58-56, 60-54.

Former world champion Steve Forbes knocked out Sergio Macias in one round. The usually light hitting Forbes improves to 27-3 and Macias drops 14-17.

Bowe Jabs His Way to Split Decision Win; Ward Moves to 3-0
By David A. Avila (April 8, 2005)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TEMECULA-Though Riddick Bowe struggled to a split-decision victory against the determined Billy Zumbrun, it was his trademark jab that proved his savior at the Pechanga Resort and Casino on Thursday.

"I was a little rusty but that will change," said Bowe (42-1, 33 KOs) after the fight.
It was Bowe's second fight after an eight-year absence and the cobwebs of inactivity kept the last undisputed heavyweight world champion from displaying his world class ability.

From the onset Zumbrun fought cautiously, not letting the bigger and 60 pounds heavier Bowe get too close. Once the former champion closed in, the Apple Valley High alumnus grabbed his arms and held tight.

In the fourth round, a left hook to the liver dropped Zumbrun in the neutral corner.

"I took an eight count after that body shot," said Zumbrun (17-6-1, 10 KOs), who was visibly in pain from the blow. "But maybe that was a mistake cause that point cost me."

Bowe began the fifth round more aggressively and began using a strong jab to score from what seemed the other side of the room. His jab was that effective.

Zumbrun, a former linebacker in college, stopped using the holding tactics and began firing three and four punch combinations that stunned Bowe.

"I was shook a little, but my experience kept me in the fight," said Bowe, who used his large frame and arms to block most of the punches.

Bowe began using the stiff jab more frequently, snapping Zumbrun's head back. The smaller fighter grabbed and held, causing referee Pat Russell to deduct a point in the eighth round.

In the 10th and final round, Zumbrun launched an all out attack that fell short of the knockout he needed.

"I didn't know it was the end of the fight," Zumbrun said. "If I had known, I would have opened up earlier. I had all kinds of energy."

Bowe's trainer Joe Goossen, said it was experience and skill that proved the difference for his fighter, who only prepared three weeks before the fight.

"I knew he had a little time to prepare but Bowe said he felt he could beat him," said Goossen his trainer.

The judges scored the fight 95-93 for Zumbrun, and 96-92 twice for Bowe.

"It was the jab that was the difference," Goossen said.

Though the crowd booed and shouted "you lost!" Bowe seemed comfortable with his performance.

"I weighed 320 pounds before I started training," said Bowe who weighed in at 280 on Wednesday. "I want to fight every three or four weeks. Then I'll be ready for anybody."

In a super middleweight bout, Andre Ward ended up in a barroom brawl with Roy Ashworth. Despite repeated warnings by referee Ray Corona, the Louisiana native refused to follow instructions. In one instance he tackled Ward and hit him from behind while on top of him. Corona disqualified Ashworth at 2:56 in the third round.

Riddick Bowe SD10 Billy Zumbrun
In the main event, aired live from the Pechanga Resort and Casino on FoxSports' "The Best Damn Sports Show, Period", Bowe barely escaped with a ten round split decision over a very game Zumbrun. Bowe's jab was the main weapon of choice, though it was a left hook to the body of Zumbrun in the fourth which produced the bout's lone knockdown. To his credit, Zumbrun shook it off, survived the round, and came right back to rock Bowe late in the fifth, earning a two point round of his own.

The second half of the bout boiled down to Bowe's jab and setting the pace versus Zumbrun's flurries and harder punches. A point deduction for hitting Bowe with his shoulder wound up completely taking the fight off of the table for Zumbrun on two scorecards. Zumbrun rallied down the stretch to earn a 95-93 verdict on one card. It was overruled by the other two judges, who saw the contest 96-92 for the former undisputed heavyweight champion.

Bowe, who weighed in at a career high 280 lb, improves to 42-1 (33KO) with the win. Zumbrun, despite having his six fight win streak come to an end, saw his stock rise considerably in defeat, as he leaves the ring with a record of 17-7-1 (9KO).

BOWE FURTHER TARNISHES NAME ON FOX

Temecula, CA-Riddick Bowe is a giant man with a miniscule brain. Never was that more evident then earlier tonight when Bowe fought on Fox Sports against journeyman Billy Zumbrun. Weighing in the neighborhood of 285 lbs., Bowe could hardly put two punches together. Now 42-1, (33 KO’s), the former heavyweight champion struggled (putting it nicely) to win a ten round Split Decision over the now 17-6-1, (9 KO’s) Zumbrun who scaled 228. The split scores read Bowe 96-92 twice, and Zumbrun 95-93. Any Commission licensing Riddick even thinking about licensing Bowe should be shut down!

Bowe nearly looses to unknown Zumbrun

By Ant Evans: The controversial comeback of former world heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe so nearly hit the skids at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in California on Thursday night. After 10 rounds a determined journeyman named Billy Zumbrun was awarded the fight by a score of 95-93 by one judge while the other two, swayed by the fact Bowe had scored a fourth-round knockdown and that Zumbrun had also had a point taken off for holding in the eighth, plumed for 'Big Daddy' 96-92 (twice).

The fight started off very slowly as Bowe, now 42-1 (33), ambled forwards towards a very cautious Zumbrun, 17-6-1 (10). At 280lbs Bowe outweighed his opponent by just over 50lbs and Zumbrun didn't want Bowe to get close and, in he did, Zumbrun employed a vice-like grip for defence.

In the second Bowe, 37, seemed to loosen up a little and his jab, the very best in the division an age ago, was heard from. Two rounds later another Bowe hallmark - the body work - was reactivated and a left to the liver dropped Zumbrun, who'd been chased into a natural corner. It looked like 'the opponent' elected to seek eight seconds of refuge rather than was slammed to the canvas - and he later regretted his decision to allow Bowe a 10-8 round.

Buoyed by his success, Bowe was more aggressive in the fifth but he clearly doesn't trust his fitness after nine years of inactivity. And Zumbrun, who scored an upset over another overweight attraction in Butterbean years ago, began firing his shots in threes and fours. Once or twice, Bowe was visibly hurt.

Big Daddy got back to his jab - which he seemingly could land from his stool - and snapped his man's neck back again and again. Stunned several times, Zumbrun went back to his holding and was deducted a point for it.

Game, though, Zumbrun went looking for the KO in the last two rounds but didn't get it. Bowe, just like new trainer Joe Goossen said he would, looked like George Foreman in blocking most of the punches which his huge arms.

"I was a little rusty but that will change," Bowe said afterwards. "I got shook a little, but my experience kept me in the fight. I weighed 320 pounds before I started training. I want to fight every three or four weeks. Then I'll be ready for anybody."

Goossen added: "It was the jab that was the difference."

Yes, but those who state Bowe should never have been issued a licence will argue anew that the overweight ex-champ should be re-retired for his own good.
