Police have charged mixed martial artist BJ Penn, 26, with suspicion of assaulting a law-enforcement officer in the first-degree after the star Hawaiian fighter allegedly punched a uniformed police officer, a Class C Felony, during an altercation at the after party for Saturday's Rumble on the Rock in Honolulu, Hawaii, according to the Honolulu Advertiser.
After pepper spray was used to disperse a large fight outside Waikiki’s Zanzabar Night Club, Penn allegedly hit officer Oscar Pauoa, 42, with a blind-side punch to his left eye and tried to run away, police told the Advertiser. However Pauoa managed to track down and tackle Penn before he was pulled off the fighter by a group of men.
If convicted, the Advertiser reports, Penn, whose bail was set at $20,000, could face five years in prison. Pauoa, was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
