Cool Winky ruins Trinidad return

Wright delivered a defensive but lethal display to down Trinidad
Winky Wright ruined Felix Trinidad's return from retirement defeating the three-time world champion by a unanimous points decision in Las Vegas.
Trinidad went into the bout favourite but the Puerto Rican had no answer for Wright's tactics and hefty punching.

The Florida southpaw took the early initiative and slowly unravelled Trinidad with his powerful left jab.

There was no title at stake but Wright could now tempt world middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins.

Wright became the undisputed superwelterweight champion after twice beating Shane Mosley last year but he went one better by beating Trinidad on his first bout at middleweight.

The 33-year-old inflicted a second career-defeat on Trinidad, who came out of his two-year retirement last October.

"Tito" has won titles in all three weight classes but he was not able to use his experience against Wright at the MGM Grand.

Wright kept up a solid defence throughout the 12 rounds, smothering Trinidad's best efforts while counteracting with his own powerful jabs.

The judges handed the southpaw a 120-107 119-108 119-108 decision to see him improve his record to 49-3.

And while Wright may now try and negotiate a fight with Hopkins, Trinidad will be left to decide whether to make Saturday's fight his last.

Wright dominates Trinidad!

By Mike Sloan and Trinidad Guzman at ringside

Former 154lb champion Winky Wright (49-3, 25 KOs) won a surprisingly easy twelve round unanimous decision over three-division champ Felix Trinidad (42-2, 35 KOs) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Not much action in round one, which the southpaw Wright controlled. In round twom Wright landed almost everything he threw, while Tito managed to get in a few good body shots. Wright again peppered Tito with a variety of punches, while most of Trinidad's power shots were blocked. Trinidad tried a flurry to the body in the fourth, but Wright controlled the rest of the round. More of the same in the fifth, Trinidad was given a warning for a low blow. Wright couldn't miss with his right jab in round six, Trinidad's only effective punch was a left hook. Winky kept popping the jab as the fight progressed. Nady deducted a point from Trinidad in round nine. The clinic continued over the last two rounds of the fight as Winky continued to connect with the jab while smothering Tito's attack. Scores were 120-107, 119-108, 119-108.

Winky Wright UD12 Felix "Tito" Trinidad
(becomes WBC middleweight mandatory challenger)
Right jab... right jab... left... right jab... left... right hook... right jab. Multiply that by twelve, and you get one of the most lopsided superfights in recent memory. Underdog Wright put on a boxing clinic, as Trinidad had no clue how to block Winky's jab - or seemingly any other punch. Trinidad landed single digit punches in every round, while Wright landed more than four times as many shots. Trinidad lost a point in the eighth round for low blows, to add insult to injury. The deduction had no effect whatsoever on the final scoring, which became a formality by fights end. Scores were 120-107, 119-108, 119-108 for Wright, who earned a career high payday and easily the biggest win of his fifteen year, fifty-two fight career. He improves to 49-3 (25KO). Trinidad, a mere two fights into his comeback, falls to 42-2 (35KO).

Wright: 'I'm a Pay Per View fighter now'

Ronald 'Winky' Wright's superb boxing winning performance against Puerto Rican legend Felix Trinidad earlier tonight is sure to elevate the likable Florida based fighter to superstar status and lucrative big money fights against the biggest names at middleweight

A delighted Wright said in the ring after his history making win: "Only in America, we are looking for the rematch then move on. I fought my fight and controlled the action . My jab is a dangerous weapon. Tito is a great fighter and I take my hat off to him. I'm a pay per view fighter now.

Promoter Don King was also very complimentary about Wright's dominant performance. "He did a great job tonight," said King. " He is a great boxer, this is what boxing is all about , his jab was excellent tonight."

You would have thought that Tito Trinidad would be devistated at such a loss but not so.

"Not devastated at all, I still have my health," said Trinidad immediately after the fight. "I knew Winky was a great fighter but Its too early to talk about rematch will learn from this fight."

Winky Wright lays waste to Trinidad legend

By Ant Evans:

Ronald 'Winky' Wright dominated every single minute of every single round in his super-fight with Felix 'Tito' Trinidad at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Saturday night. Expert opinion was split right down the middle going into this 12 round 160lbs eliminator with compelling arguments to be made each way but the judges scorecards told a remarkable story: 120-107, 119-108, 119-108 - an absolute rout.

Wright, who gave up his undisputed junior middleweight championship in order to finally get the mega fight so long denied him, gave as commanding a performance you will ever see in a big time pay-per-view main event. He dominated the entire 36minutes of action with his rapier-like southpaw jab and - to the palpable shock of the 13,000 pro Tito fans in attendance - even looked like scoring a stoppage at times.

The sad, forlorn looking Trinidad, meanwhile, could do little better than land four punches per round. Never once did Trinidad's feared left hook or pulverising right hand get anywhere near Wright and it must have been heart-breaking (and, later, even humiliating) for a former three-weight, five-time world champion like Felix Trinidad, an icon of the modern age, to have an opponent constantly grinning at him from behind the safety of his bullet-proof defensive shield.

Such was Tito's frustration that he began to throw low and, in round nine, that cost him a point from referee Jay Nady. Points were redundant, of course, as the fight had all the intrigue of a game Russian roulette played with a sawn-off shotgun at that point. But it was impossible not to feel sorry for Trinidad, a genuine superstar who first captured every fight fan's heart with a breathless second round KO of IBF welterweight champ Maurice Blocker 12 years ago.

It is difficult as it was for his devoted followers to see a similar drumming to the one Tito endured v Bernard Hopkins four years ago, it is harder still to envision Trinidad continuing on. He is only 32, sure, but his comeback after a two and a half year absence has impaired rather than enhanced his reputation.

Those who believed that a man who started his career weighing 138lbs and always had a lithe look to his legs, arms and back did not belong at middleweight have been proven right. Winky made a mockery of pre-fight suggestions that he would be too small for former 160lbs title-holder Trinidad.

Despite having his first fight at middleweight, the oft-avoided southpaw was enormous next to the Puerto Rican puncher and actually looked like the heavier hitter in there - if only because Trinidad simply could not hit anything with glove or air all night.

Wright sneaked a cautious opener by picking several crisp jabs. Trinidad was circling to his right - the traditional attack against a southpaw - but Winky is no ordinary lefty.

In the second, Wright stood right in front of Tito, parrying and catching everything thrown at him, and despite a solitary body shot landing for Trinidad, Wright is landing in 2s, threes and even a four punch combination.

Harry Simon, the talented African who beat Wright back in 1998, did so by pouring on enormous pressure on the southpaw's almost water tight defence. Trinidad never once tried to overwhelming Winky's high gear with volume and instead naively opted to go for one or two huge shots at a time.

In the third - and for much of the rest of the fight - Ttio simply couldn't throw anything because he was getting stiffed by a southpaw jab every three or four seconds. Trinidad's face was already puffy in the fourth and he was bossed around the ring once more.

There was a case for giving Trinidad the fifth; the former WBA middleweight title holder did fire off several combinations and even though they were all at least partially blocked it was a good as Tito did all night.

Refusing his baffled foe any foothold whatever, Wright is more assertive in the sixth. He rips in hooks to body and head and Trinidad's slender legs momentarily stiffened. In the middle rounds it was obvious that had Wright wanted to go through the gears and risk a sustained shelling of the smaller fighter, he could well have earned a later round stoppage. But that's not Winky's style and so he continued to dominate without trying to exterminate; although Tito's legs stiffed at least thrice more in the bout.

By the eighth Trinidad needed a knockout to win and Winky, as if to take even that slender hope of victory away, loosened his defence to encourage a series of hard shots only to respond with a superb jab, jab cross combo which send Trinidad scurrying backwards. The fight was won and lost right there.

Once again Trinidad's legs buckled in the ninth after a one-two, a left hook seems to stun him in the tenth, Trinidad finally allows some much-needed desperation into his work in the 11 but still - still - absolutely everything is blocked. Wright has thoroughly enjoyed his evening and caps the fight off by buckling Tito's legs once more.

There is a rematch clause but, really, Trinidad couldn't hit Wright with a handful of rice. This is why Oscar De La Hoya avoided Wright like the plague, this is why Fernando Vargas never gave him a rematch after getting gifted a 12 round decision back in 1999, this is why Bernard Hopkins thought better than to take him on in early 2004.

This is why he had to take fights in outposts like Luxembourg, France, Germany, Monaco, England, Argentina and South Africa - Ronald 'Winky' Wright is the defensive genius of his generation.

Afterwards the man of the hour said: ""I moved up to middleweight. He is a great fighter and he's strong. I hit him with some great shots. He has a great hook. I kept moving to avoid the hook. I take my hat off to him. He has a heart of a champion. I'll exercise the rematch clause. That was tonight. Next time may be different.

"I don't know what's next. We got to fight. Don King will deliver us another big fight. If the rematch doesn't happen, then yes I'll fight the winner of Hopkins-Taylor. I am a man of my word and he's (Trinidad) a great champion.

"That was the game plan and I executed it perfectly. It was a complete victory. I've had to keep proving myself over and over again. I think he underestimated me a little bit because of the weight gain and moving up in class. I hit him with some great shots. I hit him in the face. He has a great hook. I kept my eye on his hook the entire fight. "Tito will be better prepared the next time. He won't under estimate me the next time. Tito is my first honor but hell yeah would I take the winner of Hopkins v Taylor."

TRINIDAD TAMED BY WRIGHT STUFF
Sunday 15th May 2005
Ronald 'Winky' Wright handed Felix 'Tito' Trinidad only the second defeat of his career with a unanimous points victory in their WBC middleweight eliminator in Las Vegas.

After fighting in such glamorous locations as Millwall, Monaco and Luxembourg for much of his career, Wright elevated himself to superstar status in the boxing world as he easily outclassed the former middleweight champion.

His watertight defence and clinical combinations wowed the crowd at the MGM Grand as he picked apart his hapless opponent.

Puerto Rican Trinidad returned to the ring after a 15-month absence last year and victory over Ricardo Mayorga last October hinted at a late renaissance for a man who is a national hero back in his homeland.

His power was thought to be the key to victory, but the 32-year-old never even saw his foe's chin let alone locate it as Wright's huge arms seemed to deflect away every one of his punches.

Before the first bell sounded Wright looked to be the more impressive of the two fighters as his cut physique made Trinidad look like a young boy going up against a grown man.

A one-sided opening three minutes set the tone for what was to follow as the Washington-born boxer consistently found the target with his powerful jab and clinical straight left.

Trinidad attempted to change his style as the fight wore on but nothing he tried seemed to turn things in his favour, his attacks greeted with smiles from Wright as he replied with telling blows that left Trinidad with a bloody nose.

As the rounds wore on confidence clearly grew in the 33-year-old as his barrage of jabs was complimented with the occasional hook or uppercut that all found their intended target with unerring accuracy.

The frustration in Trinidad, a former welterweight champion, bore out in his attempts to land low blows and, after several warnings, referee Jay Nady had no option but to deduct a point in round nine.

Ever the professional, 'Winky' refused to get carried away in the closing stages as he ignored the opportunity to go for a knockout win, instead choosing to continue his opponent's misery to the very end.

Not even a final round flurry from 'Tito' could stop him slipping to a second loss in his illustrious career and questions will now be raised over his future after suffering such a humiliating defeat.

The judges scorecards confirmed what everyone who had witnessed the bout already knew as Wright comfortably won out on all three cards, 120-107, 119-108, 119-108.

The victory extend his professional record to 49-3 and puts himself in line for a showdown with undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins for what would be an intriguing battle between two of the very best boxing technicians in the business.

Winky has Wright stuff as Trinidad loses badly May 15, 2005
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

LAS VEGAS -- Winky Wright made it seem easy, just like he said he would.
In the biggest fight of his long career, Wright gave Felix Trinidad both a beating and a boxing lesson Saturday night to win their middleweight showdown.

Wright so dominated the fight that Trinidad won only one round on two ringside scorecards, and none on a third. He did it by negating the power that carried Trinidad to 35 knockout wins with great defense, and by showing some surprising punching power of his own in his first fight at 160 pounds.

"All the critics, you must hush and give me your praise," Wright said.

Trinidad, the big puncher and biggest sports hero in Puerto Rico, seemed befuddled and unable to adapt. He couldn't land his right hand and dropped a decision so lopsided that it had to damage his hopes of avenging his only other loss, to middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins.

"It was a tough fight. He's got a beautiful jab and it reached me a lot," Trinidad said.

Wright controlled the fight with his right jab, landing it at will and landing it hard. When the two got in exchanges, he landed first, and often followed it with a straight left that backed Trinidad up.

Wright, who toiled in relative obscurity for 14 years before finally getting a chance last year against Shane Mosley, won 120-107 on one scorecard and 119-108 on the other two. The Associated Press also had Wright winning 119-108.

"I've been proving myself over and over again," Wright said. "I think he underestimated me a little bit. He didn't think I was that strong."

No title was at stake, but there were plenty of other subplots in a fight that drew a near-sellout crowd of 14,176 to the MGM Grand hotel-casino arena. Trinidad came in as the big puncher, while Wright built a reputation as a slick southpaw with the ring savvy of a veteran.

Trinidad was in the second fight of his comeback after a 29-month retirement, while Wright was fighting at middleweight for the first time and getting his biggest payday ever, $4 million. And both fighters had an eye on middleweight champion Hopkins, who handed Trinidad his only defeat in September 2001.

Trinidad was an 8-5 favorite, but Wright came in determined to give him a boxing lesson, and he did. He landed 262 of 756 punches, including 185 jabs, to 58 of 557 for Trinidad, who was credited with landing only 15 jabs.

The rounds piled up one after one in Wright's favor as Trinidad was unable to land more than a handful of punches in any one round against the gloves-held-high defense of Wright.

I executed the game plan beautifully," Wright said. "I hit him with some great shots in the face."

The tone of the fight was set in the opening round as Wright used his right jab to keep Trinidad off balance. Wright kept the jab in Trinidad's face all night, frustrating Trinidad and keeping him from getting off his big punches.

Wright had promised to let fans know with a smile at the end of the first round if he had Trinidad figured out, and, sure enough, he grinned as he walked back to the corner. After the end of the second and third rounds, Wright was feeling so good he urged the crowd to cheer him on.

In the fourth round, Trinidad threw his first meaningful punches, a combination that backed Wright up. But Wright shrugged it off, motioning to Trinidad as if to say, "Is that all you've got?"

Wright (49-3, 25 knockouts) worked with his hands high, moving in behind the right jab that landed with such force that it snapped back Trinidad's head almost every time. When the two got in exchanges, he followed the right with straight left hands to Trinidad's head.

"You're making this fight so one sided, man. Keep it up," trainer Dan Birmingham told Wright after the sixth round.

Meanwhile, in Trinidad's corner there was growing desperation as the rounds went on and Wright piled up points on the ringside scorecards.

"Get closer," Trinidad's father and trainer, Tito Sr., repeatedly told his son between rounds. "Are you listening to me?"

Trinidad (42-2) was listening, but had no answers. Almost every time he tried to set himself to throw a right hand, he got a jab by Wright in his face.

The more aggressive Trinidad became as the rounds went on, the more he paid for it. Trinidad was supposed to be the big puncher, but he rarely landed anything clean through Wright's defenses while Wright seemed to shake Trinidad with both his right jab and his lefts down the middle.

The frustration was evident as Trinidad, finding no targets upstairs, repeatedly hit Wright below the belt. By the ninth round, referee Jay Nady had seen enough, and took a point from Trinidad for the low blows.

Trinidad never went down, but he seemed hurt a number of times as Wright peppered him with the stiff jab, left hand and an assortment of other punches including a big right uppercut in the 10th round.

Wright made a name for himself last year by beating Mosley twice to unify the 154-pound title. That not only got him the fight with Trinidad, but a $4 million payday that was his biggest ever.

Trinidad, who knocked out Ricardo Mayorga in his first comeback fight in October, earned $8 million.

Trinidad to box on despite defeat

Felix Trinidad ruled out retirement after a humbling loss to Winky Wright in a WBC middleweight title eliminator.
"The fighter who beats me has to be one of the best in the world, and Wright is one of the best," said "Tito" Trinidad after his second career defeat.

"He has an uncomfortable style and a stiff jab. I was in the best condition ever and couldn't land power punches."

Wright claimed an emphatic points win in Las Vegas and may now be looking to fight undisputed king Bernard Hopkins.

But Trinidad revealed he is considering activating a re-match clause against Wright, although he admitted he would have to think about his career direction.

"I'm not devastated because I'm still in good health and I'm not thinking about retirement," said the 32-year-old.

"I will have a rematch, but I have to speak with my father and manager, my wife and family about my future in boxing.

"I will accept any challenge in the future against Winky or any other champion."
