Driving down Sahara Avenue away from the famous Las Vegas strip is an experience in itself.
As one gets farther and farther away from the bright lights and perpetual life of the casinos and strip clubs, the Las Vegas rapidly transforms from the city that never sleeps to a suburb that appears to be in locked in hibernation.
Sure, there are some cars on the road, but it seems more like a Sunday morning than Friday at noon. Everything feels sleepy and slow, except for the noonday sun, which is already blasting down on the strip malls, car lots and other businesses than line Sahara en route to the corner of Lamb Street.
Parking lots are mostly empty and what people who are out don’t seem to be moving around with any great sense of purpose. It is a stark contrast to the constant casino driven hustle only a few short miles away.
We finally arrive at the location for today’s assignment. With barely a handful of cars scattered around the long parking lot, the smallish business park houses several businesses and what appears to be a warehouse of some sort, although none of them appear to be open at the moment, except for two – a slot machine repair shop located in the back of the building and One Kick Nick’s Gym, which is where the action is set to go down for the afternoon.
After all, today is a training day for the “New York Bad Ass Phil Baroni as he prepares for his Pride debut at Bushido 7 this coming weekend.
Baroni arrives a few minutes later with his boxing coach. After stretching out and shadow boxing for a few rounds just to get loose, it’s time to spar.
“It’s really hard to get top guys to spar 10-minute rounds with me, unless they fight in Pride, Baroni explained about the round structure of his sparring session. “So what I do is get some UFC guys like Mayhem Miller and Jay Hieron and rotate them after five minutes. If I’m sparring top boxers or kickboxers like Dewey Cooper, I’ll go three-minute rounds with 30-second rest periods. So I feel that the 10-minute round won’t be a problem or an issue. I think Minowa will be the one who gets exhausted trying to take me down and failing.
