Tyson quits boxing after defeat

Former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson said he will quit boxing after losing to Irish journeyman Kevin McBride in Washington on Saturday.
Tyson looked far from comfortable during his fight which many expected him to win, and referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight before round seven.
McBride, from Monaghan, was awarded the bout on a technical knockout.

"I'm not going to fight again. I haven't got the fighting guts or the heart any more," said the 39-year-old.

Tyson, who has a record of 50 wins, including 44 knockouts, six defeats and two no-contests, said he did not want to disgrace the sport.
"I was just fighting to pay off the bills," he added. "I'm not an animal anymore."

Referee Cortez halted the bout after a manic sixth round which ended with Tyson hesistatingly rising and walking to his corner after being pushed down to the floor by McBride.
"This win was for the pride of Ireland," McBride said. "I proved everyone wrong."
Tyson was penalised two points for a head-butt in the sixth round that opened a cut under McBride's left eye. McBride then had Tyson against the ropes in the same round and pushed him to the canvas, where he remained until after the bell rang. Tyson returned to his stool, before his trainer Jeff Fenech signalled to the referee that his boxer would be unable to continue.

Two judges had Tyson leading 57-55 after six rounds while the third had the 32-year-old McBride ahead by the same margin.

McBRIDE STUNS TYSON

SportingLife UK

Irish heavyweight Kevin McBride stunned the boxing world in Washington DC with a sensational stoppage victory over American legend Mike Tyson.

Tyson retired on his stool at the end of the sixth round at the MCI Center after a desperate performance against the Clones 32-year-old.

The 38-year-old Tyson, who lost his last fight against Briton Danny Williams in July last year, had been docked points in the sixth round for what appeared to be an intentional headbutt as the fight slipped from his grasp.

The first round started slowly with Tyson cautious against the towering Ulsterman, who was similarly tentative.

As McBride tried to use his reach advantage with the jab, Tyson found a way through on a handful of occasions with two rights to the body proving most successful.

Widespread predictions of a second-round stoppage for Tyson proved incorrect with the Clones fighter holding his own, arguably winning both of the opening rounds as a low-blow warning for the American proved the most interesting exchange of the second.

A left hook snapped McBride's head back mid-way through the third as the New Yorker found his range to win the round.

He stepped up a gear in the fourth, 6ft 6ins McBride shrugging off a number of power shots as Tyson threw single punches to the head and body, claiming the round despite a suspect clash of heads and two more punches below the waist.

The bout swung back towards the lumbering Irishman's favour, however, when Tyson visibly tired in the fifth and was forced to take a number of solid shots.

The increasingly-desperate Tyson was docked two points for another headbutt in the sixth round which split McBride's left eyebrow open. At the end of the round Tyson was pushed onto the canvas and as the bell went, appeared to struggle to his feet.

And when trainer Jeff Fenech signalled to referee Joe Cortez Tyson had had enough with the fight slipping from his grasp, McBride's corner leapt to their feet in celebration.

Tyson quits in 6th, loses to McBride

Boxer says ‘I don’t have it anymore,’ will probably retire

WASHINGTON - Mike Tyson’s career may have ended in shocking fashion Saturday night when he quit on the stool after taking a beating in a foul-filled sixth round against unheralded Kevin McBride.

Tyson lost for the third time in his last four fights, and once again he faded badly as the rounds went on before head butting McBride in a desperate attempt to end the fight in the sixth round.

“I don’t have it anymore, Tyson told Jim Gray afterward.

Gray then asked Tyson if he would retire, to which Tyson answered yes.

Tyson was pushed to the canvas when the round ended, his head stuck between the first and second ropes. He got up very slowly, wobbled back to his corner and sat on his stool.

When referee Joe Cortez came by to look at him, his corner told Cortez the fighter could not continue. Cortez then went over and raised McBride’s hand in victory.

The 38-year-old Tyson was a huge favorite over McBride and won the early rounds. But as the fight went on, it was McBride landing the bigger punches as Tyson desperately tried to score a knockout.

Tyson was weary by the fifth round and, in the sixth round, he was penalized two points for deliberately head butting McBride and opening a cut over his left eye. The head butt came after Tyson appeared to try to break McBride’s arm in a clinch like he once did against Francois Botha and after he hit him with several low blows.

In a career filled with tremendous highs and terrible lows, Tyson may have reached a new low in the loss to McBride, who came into the fight with no credentials.

McBride stops Tyson, and a career

After a sluggish six rounds against would-be fodder Kevin McBride, Mike Tyson decided he’s had enough and declined to come out for the seventh, losing by technical knockout Saturday night in Washington D.C.’s MCI Center.

Starting slow in the opener, Tyson, 233, lobbed wide punches and kept McBride on the defensive, with the 271-lb. Irishman covering up content to work uppercuts and rights on the inside. But by the third and fourth rounds it was apparent that Tyson’s fury wasn’t in the ring with him, and McBride survived headbutts, low blows, and an arm-wrenching in the sixth round to toss in enough punches to make Tyson think the better of continuing.

McBride upped his record to 33-4-1 (27 KO), while Tyson dropped to 50-6 (44 KO) with two no-contests.

“I don’t have any desire for this anymore, Tyson said afterward to Showtime’s Jim Gray. “I saw that I was getting beat on. I’ve go the ability to stay in shape but not the ability to fight anymore.

Tyson lost two points for a headbutt in the sixth round from referee Joe Cortez.

McBride was all smiles afterwards, his strategy of hanging in early paying off big as Tyson visibly waned. After the sixth, pushed down off a clinch, Tyson looked as though he wanted Cortez to help him up.

“Every day I’m learning something different. It’s great for Ireland. We’re crying out for a heavyweight for a long time. I’m not a pretender, I’m a contender, McBride said.

Tyson’s performance showed little of the fire he built his reputation on, even in late-career blowouts of foes like McBride brought in to be hit and fall down. His combinations were virtually non-existent, and even when able to land decent body punches, he consistently fell into clinches, where McBride would pop him with uppercuts and lean on him.

Tyson’s veneer of intimidation never manifested itself, as McBride took several good shots to the body and the head with little effect.

“I’m just fighting to take care of my bills, basically. I don’t have the stomach for this anymore. I don’t have that ferocity, Tyson said. Asked if this was the end of his career, he proferred an on-the-spot response which may or may not hold up in the coming months and years, but hopefully will.

“Most likely I’m not gonna fight again, he said. “I’m not gonna disrespect the fight game anymore by losing to this caliber of fighter.

McBride didn’t seem to hold a grudge despite the rough stuff that transpired in the fight.

“He’s trying to break me arm and head butt me. That’s the rough tactics of boxing. He wasn’t getting his way with me, McBride said. “I’m just coming into my prime.

Tyson added that he wished there was some way that fans could get their money back and apologized to them. Whether he stays out of the game remains to be seen, but his days as a pay-per-view franchise ended tonight. On his way out of the arena, he was pelted with a piece of debris from a fan, a champion making what hopefully will be the last of ungrateful exits from paying customers who should’ve known better.

M'n hart geeft me dat in."

K-1 iemand?? :maskills:

TYSON: I'VE LIVED A LIE
Humbled ex-champ has not wanted to fight for 15 years!
By David Anderson in Washington

MIKE TYSON has admitted he had been living a lie for 15 years after finally quitting the ring.

The former undisputed world heavyweight champion retired in the wake of his six-round defeat to Kevin McBride here - and then revealed his heart has not been in fighting since 1990.

That was when James 'Buster' Douglas shocked the boxing world by beating Tyson in Tokyo to shatter his aura of invincibility. Tyson, who will be 39 at the end of the month, claims he lost his hunger that night, even though he went on to regain the WBA and WBC belts.

"It really finished for me in 1990," he said. "It was the never the same for me after that and although I tried to kid myself, my heart wasn't in it.

"After that I only wanted to fight for money and to maintain my lifestyle. I was pretty shallow back then and I liked money. Girls liked the money and I liked the girls and that was why I fought.

"But I don't live like that now and I don't need this.

"That guy who had all those knock-outs in 1986...I didn't know that guy any more."

Tyson's shock defeat to journeyman Irishman McBride in Washington's MCI Center was his third in his last four fights and he knew there was no way back after this all-time low.

"I'd already decided if I lost this fight, that would be it and it is," he said.

McBride's win was totally overshadowed by Tyson's retirement, except in his home town of Clones which enjoyed its biggest party since Barry McGuigan won the WBA world featherweight title in 1985.

McBride, 32, whose £75,000 purse was less than that of Muhammad Ali's daughter Leila, who fought on the undercard, said: "This is fantastic for me. Now I want to go on and become the first heavyweight world champion born and raised in Ireland."
