KLITSCHKO-RAHMAN OFFICIALLY CANCELLED
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

05 Nov 2005
Top Rank Press Release: The world heavyweight championship fight featuring Vitali Klitschko vs. Hasim Rahman on November 12 is postponed and will be rescheduled, Bob Arum of Top Rank announced today.

Klitschko, the WBC heavyweight champion, was injured while sparring in Los Angeles on Thursday. He wrenched his right knee and did not continue training.

On Saturday, Klitschko was examined by famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tony Daly of Los Angeles. He diagnosed the injury as a sprain and suggested the use of a rigid brace on the right knee. However, while sparring in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon, Klitschko reported the knee did not respond to either medical treatment or the use of the brace.

Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank and Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotions, announced that Klitschko vs. Rahman will be rescheduled. A new date, Arum said, will be announced next week.

No Surprises Here from Klitschko

Ask a professional boxer if he or she has ever entered the ring in perfect shape, and if they answer in the positive, they’re probably lying.

“I’ve yet to meet a fighter that went in there 100%, said former lightweight contender and amateur star Brian Adams. “As a professional, there’s always something.

Hasim Rahman, the heavyweight challenger in limbo after the fourth postponement of his bout against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko due to an injured knee suffered by “Dr. Ironfist Friday in Los Angeles, is probably not 100% right now. The former world champion most likely has bumps and bruises somewhere on his body, his muscles are probably sore and maybe for a meaningless non-title fight, he would pull the trigger on a fight.

But this isn’t just a fight. This is for the heavyweight championship of the world, and at some point you have to consider what you are fighting for. The heavyweight championship used to be the crown jewel of sports, and one writer once described a heavyweight champion as being “Boxing’s Mister President.

No longer. Now it’s a joke because a) no one knows who the real champion is among the four titlists, and b) no one really cares.

Klitschko was supposed to be the one to change all that. He was supposed to be THE champion above the rest, the one who would unify the crown and make it safe again to tell people that you were a boxing fan.

He hasn’t been even close to that so far. He defended the title once against Danny Williams (who earned his shot by beating a shot Mike Tyson) almost a year ago, and since then he has done everything in his power to get out of fighting Rahman, citing a laundry list of ailments along the way. This is just the latest.

But that shouldn’t surprise anyone because Klitschko is just a man who happens to box for a living. It’s allowed him to travel the world, make a lot of money, and ensure his future. But at the end of the day, he’s still a sportsman. Sportsmen don’t see boxing for what it could be – a life and death struggle. If he’s got an aching knee or a bad back, he’s not going to fight. End of story. He won’t lose any sleep over it either because when boxing is over for him, he can get into politics, write books, and help charitable organizations. The boxing fans up in arms over this latest postponement - the ones who would be buying the pay-per-views next Saturday - don’t really matter when it comes down to it. This is a sport, he would probably argue, not my life.

Conversely, Rahman is a fighter. There are no fall-back plans for him, so when he’s getting perhaps his final shot at the championship and all the fringe benefits that come with it, he puts aside those aches and pains he probably has, and he fights.

He has to fight. Klitschko doesn’t.

That’s the difference.

So when Klitschko hobbles to a podium somewhere to explain his latest physical mishap, don’t call him a liar – he probably is legitimately hurt. You can save the ‘liar’ tag for every other fighter who steps in the ring and says ‘I’m in perfect shape, the best of my life.’ They’re the ones lying, but they’re also the ones we admire for playing hurt and putting it all on the line in spite of their various aches and pains.

Guys like Hasim Rahman.

Vitali speaks about injury!

"I want to apologize once again to everyone involved in this fight. Hasim Rahman, the promoters, HBO, all the fans," says heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, who was forced to withdraw from his November 12 title defense against Hasim Rahman because of a knee injury suffered Thursday during sparring in Los Angeles.

"All of this is very devastating to me," said Klitschko. I am not sure anyone can imagine how very sad and depressing this year has been for me because of all of the injuries. Next year can only be better. For now, I am just hoping that I will know more by the end of this week when I will be able to return to the ring."

Klitschko, who was set to earn in excess of $8 million for defending against Rahman, said entering the ring less than 100 percent was never a consideration.

"There was no absolutely no way I would go into the ring in my current condition," Klitschko said. "Maybe others would have gone in, just for the money. But I am too much of a sportsman for that. I could never betray my fans and the sport of boxing just for a payday, no matter how much it was. I have too much character to enter a fight knowing I am hurt, try and fight a round or two, then quit and go home.

"I would never take the money and run."

Klitschko plans to fly to Vail, Colo., in the next few days to have his right knee examined by renowned knee specialist and pioneer in cartilage regeneration, Dr. Richard Steadman.

"I want to get another opinion on my knee and Dr. Steadman is known as the best in the world," said the WBC heavyweight championAn MRI was taken Thursday night.

"After reviewing the MRI Friday, Dr. Bert Mandelbaum (of Santa Monica, Calif.) told me that I have at least a torn meniscus and a bone bruise," Klitschko said. "I was examined again on Saturday by (orthopedic surgeon) Dr. Tony Daly. I was fitted with several knee braces and tried to spar. But nothing worked. My knee was just too unstable."

Klitschko given 90-day reprieve

Vitali Klitschko has pulled out of fights with Rahman four times

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko must be ready to fight within 90 days or his title will be handed to Hasim Rahman. Klitschko cancelled a fight against Rahman for the fourth time in 2005 when he hurt his knee sparring on Thursday. The mandatory defence had been scheduled for 12 November in Las Vegas.

Rahman's camp claimed the belt was now his but WBC boss Jose Sulaiman has agreed to wait until Saturday for a full diagnosis of Klitschko's injury.

Sulaiman said: "You shouldn't lose your title because you get injured. A decision that is fair for everyone will come in time." If Klitschko isn't available to fight, Rahman will be declared the undisputed heavyweight world champion

The 34-year-old Ukrainian withdrew from the first scheduled fight against Rahman in April due to a thigh injury and a back problem has kept him out of two further dates. A former champion, Rahman, 32, chose to fight Monte Barrett in August and scored a convincing win to claim the WBC interim title and force Klitschko into a mandatory challenge.

Don King, Rahman's promoter, has accused Klitschko of "ducking" his man. "Anyone could tell that Vitali did not want to fight Rock (Rahman)," King said on Sunday. "This is why I lobbied for Rock's last fight to be for the WBC interim heavyweight title. The moment Vitali cancelled his mandatory defence he vacated his title and Rahman immediately assumed his crown according to the rules and regulations of the WBC."

But Sulaiman said: "We can't act under pressure from anybody when we think that pressure will force an injustice.

Vitali wants to keep the WBC belt - he's a proud champion and he loves the belt.

Bernd Boente Klitschko's manager:
"You all know there are economic interests all over the world that were pressuring us to stop recognising Klitschko as champion and give the title to Rahman. But it seems to me unfair not to give a fighter a chance to undergo medical examinations to determine if the injury is major or minor."

Sulaiman, however, also noted that this was the fourth time Klitschko (35-2, 34 knockouts) has backed out of a fight with Rahman (41-5-1, 33 KOs), and hinted the champion may be looking for excuses to stay out of the ring. "I think that perhaps this has more to do with physiological aspects, I don't know," Sulaiman said. "That's why we are going to wait for the results of a medical examination. If Klitschko isn't available to fight, Rahman will be declared the undisputed heavyweight world champion."

Earlier on Monday, Klitschko's manager Bernd Boente told BBC Radio Five Live that the boxer had spoken personally to Sulaiman. "I don't care what Don King says anymore - everybody knows who Don King is and I think that speaks for itself. Sulaiman said he will wait until Vitali has seen the doctor to see what is happening with the injury," said Boente. "We have to live with it. We have to see what the doctor says and hope for the best."

Boente insisted Klitschko, who has not fought since beating England's Danny Williams last December, would not be ready to fight until next year. "That is not only because of his body but because of the TV situation in general - you cannot reschedule a fight that easily," he added. "Vitali wants to keep the WBC belt. He's a proud champion and he told Sulaiman that he loves the belt."

And Boente denied King's claims that Klitschko was running scared. "I don't care what Don King says anymore. Everybody knows who Don King is and I think that speaks for itself," said Boente.

Rahman's manager Steve Nelson was reported to be "enraged" by the WBC's decision to give the champion more time, according to The Baltimore Sun newspaper.

Promoter Bob Aram, who won the bid to promote the 12 November contest, said the rescheduled event could still take place in February, March or April.

Champ Klitschko decides to retire
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/4420704.stm

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko has retired from the sport after failing to recover from injury. The 34-year-old Ukrainian made the decision after undergoing surgery on the knee injury which forced him to cancel his bout with Hasim Rahman.

"It's a hard decision to take, but I'd like to go out at the top and with my departure open the way for my successors," he said in a statement.
"Recently I have been bothered more by my injuries than opponents."

Klitschko's mandatory defence against Rahman had been scheduled for 12 November in Las Vegas. But he was forced to cancel the fight, the fourth time he had done so, after damaging his knee sparring on 3 November. The WBC gave Klitschko 90 days to fight otherwise Rahman would be handed the title. However, Klitschko decided that after the operation, he would not be able to make that deadline.

"I want to thank my team, the media and the fans for their co-operation and their support," he added. "I seek new social and political challenges in my home country the Ukraine."

Klitschko failed in his first attempt at winning the title when he was controversially stopped by Lennox Lewis in 2003. He won the world belt in April 2004 after beating Corrie Sanders but has not fought since December last year when he defeated Britain's Danny Williams. Klitschko was due to fight Rahman on 30 April, 18 June and 23 July, but back and thigh injuries forced him to pull out. Klitschko is the second WBC heavyweight champion in a row to retire while holding the title.

Lewis quit in February 2004, coincidentally having beaten Klitschko in his last fight. Lewis was the first reigning world heavyweight champion to quit since Rocky Marciano in 1956.
