In darkened clubs and halls across London and the South East, a rowdy new spectator sport is emerging. It is called Cage Combat.
In a specially-constructed octagonal cage, two fighters face each other with no holds barred. Combining boxing, kick-boxing, wrestling and martial arts, cage combat is a brutal, but intoxicating, spectacle.
Mixed martial arts or caged fighting is an American import. It was so extreme that when it first arrived in Britain it was almost banned, but that was over seven years ago. Since then, the sport has been cleaned up and its popularity has rocketed. Cage Combat examines this fast-growing sport, following ten men and two women through their punishing training regime to the big fight.
Among the contestants are Jeremy Bailey, who once served ten months for actual bodily harm; Glenn Appleby, a civil servant with the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs; current Thai boxing world champion Karen Ousey; and former Hollyoaks actor Alex Reid. Narrated by Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels star Nick Moran, Cage Combat is produced by an all-female production team.
