Two of the contestants from the Sylvester Stallone reality show "The Contender" square off in a middleweight title match Saturday at George Mason University's Patriot Center in Fairfax. Jimmy Lange (26-2-1, 17 knockouts) and Joey Gilbert (10-1, seven knockouts) will meet to compete for the North American Boxing Organization middleweight belt on Saturday. Lange, a Great Falls native, was upset and eliminated from "The Contender" by Gilbert, a Reno, Nev., native. The loss to underdog Gilbert was only Lange's second professional defeat.
Lange called Gilbert "the best athlete on the show," but said the loss was "a huge disappointment." Lange's excited, however, about fighting for a major championship belt "in my hometown." That's "a great opportunity for redemption," he said.
Gilbert, a former NCAA boxing champion, who called Lange "a great guy," said he's excited that for the first time ever, he's been allowed to devote himself exclusively to training for a fight. "It's the first time I've ever been able to just drop everything, put everything on hold," he said, "and train like I've never trained before--spend every moment sleeping, eating and dreaming it. I'm excited to see the difference in my performance."
He recommended amateur boxing for kids, saying protective gear makes it safe and that "it's an unbelievable tool for building self-discipline and a work ethic. "It's a sport," Gilbert said, "in which you can't cheat yourself or you'll find out real quick you shouldn't be in there."
