Interview: Ole Baguio Laursen
March 22, 2006

ME: Fighting Sammy Presents HEROS March.15.2006, what was the rules breakdown?

Ole: Rules breaks down to no kickin /kneeing/striking downed opponent in face,
no biting, eye gouging. Think that’s pretty much the most important things.

Compare Muay Thai/kickboxing with MMA please.

Well, it’s way different as the whole fight could end up being fought purely
submission wrestling on ground. These days standup fighters are makin
some good fights and are learning to get away from grapplers game plan
on ground and manage to stand and strike with them.

Which do you prefer fighting Muay Thai/kickboxing or MMA more?

Don’t think I can answer that question yet, I am still a Muay Thai fighter
first before MMA fighter but I did really enjoy last fight in MMA rules, was
really fun training for it also and I enjoy learning new things.

How are you feeling for this next K1 MAX rules fight vs., I believe your
opponent is tough/talented Gago Drago?

Feel good, it’s a big chance I been given, if I can get passed Drago
I’m in the finals so its now or never for me.

Are you preparing for this fight differently?

For sure yeah, K1 is not really Muay Thai. I’ve seen enough Thai
fighters loose fights which I thought they should have won to know
how they score fights, so yeah I’m training differently.

You have a shot at the K1 World MAX. Does this turning point in
your life represent something you’ve always wanted?

There’s a lot of guys in the MAX I would like to beat, so yeah,
it’s a big chance for me, some serious glory in being the last man
standing as winner of the tourney.

What would you like to see change most in your fighting career?

I would like to do more MMA, would like to get better at my
ground work, want to beat the guys with all the hype.

Back to the MMA:

Did you and Mr. Genki Sudo hangout outside of the press
conference much?

Not really, we did sit in sauna together for a chat as we were
both makin weight, he seems like a cool guy, very humble and respectful.

Did you ever say to yourself you wanted to be matched up vs. Genki Sudo?

Yeah for sure, he is a big name in my weight division so surely its only
natural for me to want to fight him.

Did you like Mr. Sudo’s entrance performance?

Haha, yeah, I always like Genki’s entrance but I seen some better ones
from him than this last one.

What was it like getting hit with MMA gloves by Genki Sudo?

A bit different to get hit with small gloves, more of hard snap instead of
a heavy shot, I don’t know really, at first was a bit strange, I thought a
few of those shots would take you out but I guess not.

What was it like punching with MMA gloves?

I liked it, more freedom, smaller glove.

Did you notice any hand speed changes?

Well, after all the grappling I got so tense in my muscles, that kinda took
away my handspeed, felt like I been lifting weight all day before goin into
that last xtra round.

During the fight, did going for a submission ever cross you mind?

Yeah, all the time I was thinking about it cos I saw the openings but I
figured I should play it smart and stick to game plan me and my
coach/friend/fighter had worked out, try to get way from his ground
game ,if possible setup shots from ground if not aim to get out and stand again.
But maybe if I fought him again I would feel brave enough to try some
moves on him, especially after watching our fight I saw there were many
things I could have done.

What inspired you, at that exact moment to go for the jumping spinning
double knee to the face, while Genki Sudo was in the guard position?

Haha Well to be honest with you it was infact Tony Jaa, saw him do a move
like it in his movie Ong Bak, it worked really well for me, had to modify it a bit as
the ref kept yelling out not to land them in face but different rules in future and
I’m goin all out ONGBAK STYLEEE!

You fought Genki Sudo, a World Class MMA fighter. Looking back and after watching
the fight, are you happy with your grappling performance?

I am, I listened to my corner, took the advice, stayed with plan we had, still I wanted
to show that I can actually roll a bit but taking chances with Genki, a brown belt, would
have been maybe to brave of me.

After your MMA debut, you have shown you have MMA skills.
Where do your skills come from?

My brother and I started training for MMA already from before UFC, when it was
called xtreme fighting championships, my brother would get tapes from all over
world and we would train, we were same weight same size so we always had each
other to work on ideas with. would watch a tape, rewind and watch it in slow motion
and go over it on ground in front of the TV while our mother was thinking her 2 sons
had lost it. This was back when I was 17.

Ok, before start asking you a million more questions, your overall vibe bout your
upcoming battle vs. Gago Drago.

Its now or never, this is biggest chance I will probably ever get so I better man up on 5th.

Are you looking for sponsors and how can they contact you?

Yes I am, would be great to have some sponsors, also would be good to have sponsors for
my gym. Also I’m trying something new, hoping to find someone to sponsor the kids in the
camp, a chance for someone to sponsor young poor Thai kids way to becoming a champion.

Any thanks yous Ole?

I’d like to thank Sammy Presents HEROS for giving me the chance,

My thanks to Super Pro Boxing Gear for sponsoring my gym,

Thanks to the few supporters I have.
