Ishe Smith

On May 6th one of boxing's biggest stars will return to the ring for the first time in over a year, when Oscar de la Hoya faces Ricardo Mayorga. But, there will be another fighter on that card who hasn't fought in year as well. This fighter is Ishe Smith, the Contender that sometimes gets forgotten about. Unlike his Contender counterparts, Smith has not stepped into the ring since the show, and will finally do so when he meets 16-3 Alexis Divison on the Danger Zone undercard. Smith's return is an intriguing addition to the Danger Zone card.

Ishe Smith turned into the forgotten Contender since the show ended. He was one of the top fighters on the show, yet little has been heard from him since the show. While Sergio Mora, Peter Manfredo Jr. and Alfonso Gomez have gained even more fame since the show, Smith kind of faded into the limelight. There is of course a big reason for this; Smith chose not to fight in any of the Contender cards that followed the show. Ishe stayed out, while his counterparts continued to profit and continued to expose themselves on Contender themed cards. Smith was never there, Smith was never mentioned. Why was this the case? Well there's probably a couple of answers to that question.

First, Smith was probably tired of fighting short fights, and wanted to get back to fighting in eight and ten round fights. Secondly, Smith wanted to get back to his career, which was rolling along before he ever joined the show. Outside of Manfredo, Smith was probably the most hyped fighter going in, and also besides Manfredo, Smith had the best pro-record coming into the show; going into the show Smith was one of the favorites to win. With a 14-0 record, and had beaten some big name fighters already like David Estrada and former champion Randall Bailey. Unfortunately for Smith and Manfredo, it's harder winning 5 round fights, where anything can happen.

Sure Smith didn't win, but he had a pretty good showing. Remember he dominated previously unbeaten Ahmed Kaddour, and lost a split decision to the eventual champ Sergio Mora. He then came back in the finale, and easily beat Anthony Bonsante.

After the show ended Smith avoided making more money, and cut ties from the show, unlike his counterparts who continued fighting Contender themed shows. Instead, he wanted to get back to his regular career. It's taken him awhile, but finally on May 6th the forgotten Contender Ishe Smith will return to ring action.
