What Joey Spina lacked in skill (and he lacked A LOT), he made up in heart and determination, rallying back to stop "The Contender" semi-finalist Jesse Brinkley midway through the eleventh round.
The bout was the main event of ESPN2's Wednesday Night Fights, aired live from Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, CT.

Spina (18-0-1, 13KO) started out looking to set a fast pace, an odd move considering that Brinkley was the smaller fighter moving up in weight. Brinkley fought smart, throwing less but landing more punches and at a much higher percentage. Lather, rinse and repeat for the first 5 1/2 rounds. It took for Spina to get rocked midway through the sixth to wake up.

Spina came back with a left hook toward rounds end, and followd it up with a right that opened up a huge cut over Brinkley's left eye. The tide turned for good, as Spina dominated the second half of the fight. Brinkley benefitted from several breaks, as referee Michael Ortega summoned the ringside physician to examine the cut on three separate occasions. There was no saving Jesse in the eleventh, when Spina worked over Brinkley's body. Accumulation led to the bout's lone knockdown, as Brinkley voluntarily took a knee. He beat Ortega's count, but was given extra time to recover and replace his mouthpiece. The doctor spent the entire time talking to Brinkley, giving Jesse nearly a full minute total time to recover.

It wasn't enough - Spina smelled blood and went in for the kill. Brinkley couldn't get the heat up off of him, so Ortega intervened, 1:50 into the eleventh. Spina was down on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage. Instead, he gave the hometown crowd and ending to cheer about, in a fight that seemed better served on the club circuit than on national television.

While Spina remains unbeaten, Brinkley's career heads in the opposite direction. After having won 22 straight at one point, the Vegas-based boxer has now dropped three of his last four, the lone win a controversial decision over Anthony Bosante last October.
