Groetjes,

Team Golden Glory

In a last minute scramble to restore some star power to the July 15 card at Korakuen Hall, leading Shooto promoter Sustain has added a match between recently dethroned Shooto world champion "Lion" Takeshi Inoue (Pictures) and Holland's Marc Duncan, completing the card.

The event was originally scheduled to be headlined by an anticipated world 132-pound title clash between former champion Ryota Matsune (Pictures) and current ace Akitoshi Hokazono (Pictures). However, as Sherdog.com reported earlier this week, Matsune sustained both a partially torn bicep and broken left rib in training, and was forced to pull out. With the considerably less vogue title bout between 183-pound king Shikou Yamashita (Pictures) and Siyar Bahadurzada, Sustain quickly dug into its bag of tricks to bring in Bahadurzaga's teammate Marc Duncan to face Inoue.

Inoue is coming off his upset loss to Akitoshi Tamura (Pictures) this past May, in which he lost the Shooto 143-pound championship, while Duncan has won five of his last six, with the lone loss coming to star prospect turned UFC standout Thiago Tavares (Pictures). A regular in Shooto Europe, this will be Duncan's second trip to Japan, having been submitted by Koutetsu Boku (Pictures) in Nov. 2001.

Due to the short notice of the bout and compounded by Inoue's recent weight issues, the fight will be contested at a catch-weight of 150 pounds. The former champion struggled to make weight for his title defense against Tamura two months ago, needing additional time to weigh-in, citing the fact that his day job, which consists of washing boats, created the difficulty of keeping his weight down in training.

Leading pro Shooto promoter Sustain is back, with the fourth installment of 2007's "Back To Our Roots" series.

If the sentence above excites you, then you've come to the right place. If not, well it should, and so you should read onward anyhow.

The evening's main event will see virtually unknown Shooto world 183-pound champ Shikou Yamashita (Pictures) make the first defense of the title he won in April 2006, against another stranger to the general MMA populace in Dutch-bred Afghan Siyar Bahadurzada.

Almost comical in the fact that it's the top billing, the bout should offer some excitement. Both are tough, scrappy fighters, and although Bahadurzada has a height, reach and power advantage over the squatty Yamashita, the champ has shown he has no qualms about standing around and slinging leather with guys who are better strikers than him.

However, Yamashita typically adheres to the Al Davis M.O. of "Just win, baby." Having beat some decent fighters in David Bielkheden (Pictures) and Dustin Denes (Pictures), Yamashita can fight a little bit. Although Bahadurzada's grappling looks decent against the competition he's faced in Shooto Europe, time and time again Europeans are imported into Shooto Japan only for their groundwork to be shown to range between decent at best and woefully insufficient.

Where Bahadurzada's fits into that spectrum remains to be seen, however after he gets the better of the stand-up, look for Yamashita to take the fight to the floor where he can work his game to a submission or position-based decision victory.

Recently dethroned 143-pound king "Lion" Takeshi Inoue (Pictures) will make his return to action against Dutchman Marc Duncan.

The bout was hastily thrown together to add another bit of star power to the card, after the Matsune-Hokazono fight was cancelled. Inoue lost his Shooto world title to Akitoshi Tamura (Pictures) in a minor upset this past May, and was uncharacteristically sluggish throughout the bout. Lion later revealed that he had extreme difficulty making weight, largely due to his hours at his regular job washing boats. As absurd as that may sound, this bout will take place at a 150-pound catch-weight, as a result.

The fight is a tune-up for a fallen star, plain and simple. Duncan is fairly athletic and hits hard, but it generally ho-hum in the skills department. Lion has shown some vulnerability to power punching before, but his recovery is top notch, and he is generally a smart fighter in regard to getting out of danger. Moreover, Lion is likely the functionally stronger of the two fighters, in addition to being the better grappler.

In case it already hasn't been spelled out for you, look for Inoue and Duncan to trade shots standing, until the former champ takes the fight to the ground at will, and proceeds to pound and advance position until he locks up a submission early in the fight.

Stuk over Siyar's partij:
The night's finale saw reigning Shooto Light Heavyweight Champion Shikou Yamashita lose his title against the relatively unknown Siyar Bahadurzada, fighting out of Stephen Tapilatu's Tatsujin Dojo , also home to Women's MMA star Marloes Coenens.

Bahadurzada filled out the first round frustrating Yamashita's attempts to escape his stand-up. With a definite reach advantage and strong sense of timing, Bahadurzada saw Yamashita's shots coming a mile away, fiercely countering and overwhelming Yamashita in the stand-up.

The second round was a genetic replica of the first, the only mutation being Yamashita's attempt at a standing guillotine near the end which Bahadurzada escaped.

Luck seemed to finally be on Yamashita's side as he succeeding in taking down Bahadurzada, though even here his efforts were unfruitful as they met Bahadurzada's rubber guard. A return to the feet saw Yamashita attempt another takedown only to be grounded himself by Bahadurzada, who finished the round throwing knees to Yamashita's body from side control and earning himself the title of Shooto World Light Heavyweight Champion.

Stuk over Marc's partij
An over-matched Mark Duncan had little justification for the long flight to Japan as he was submitted by former Champion Takeshi Inoue. Turning his back to avoid Lion's ground and pound assault, Duncan succumbed to a rear naked choke. After the bout, Lion announced his intention to capture the Pacific Rim Lightweight title before attempting to regain the world title he lost to Akitoshi Tamura in May.

Hele verslag
