It was reported by Steve Springer of the Los Angeles Times that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Ricky Hatton has a tentative date of November 10, with Las Vegas being the most logical site.
After days of back and forth verbal battles through the media, both fighters are ready to make the fight a reality. The biggest obstacle appears to be the amount of money each fighter will receive.
Hatton received $2.5 million for the four-round stoppage of Jose Luis Castillo last weekend in Las Vegas, while Mayweather made $20 million for his split decision win over Oscar De La Hoya on May 5. Mayweather is almost sure to demand a significant chunk of money for the fight. Art Pelullo, Hatton's promoter in America, told the paper that if both sides can agree on money - the fight will happen.
"If we can reach agreement on the money, there's no reason it can't happen," said Pelullo.
Mayweather, 30, "retired" after his May win over De La Hoya, and says that Hatton's taunts over the last few weeks have given him the motivation to return. It was noted in The Times that De La Hoya called Hatton after his recent win to congratulate him and made comments in the press with respect to a fight between him and Hatton filling up England's Wembley Stadium. The call from De La Hoya may have been the real reason why Mayweather jumped for the Hatton fight so quickly.
Leonard Ellerbe, advisor to Mayweather, disagrees.
"What prompted [negotiations with Hatton] is, over the last couple of weeks, Ricky Hatton has been saying a lot about Floyd Mayweather," said Ellerbe, "He's used Floyd's name to promote himself. He's calling Hatton's bluff, and now the whole world will see if this guy wants to fight and sign a contract now. ... We can definitely make it happen this year. The ball's in their court."
