Representatives of ProElite, Inc. on Thursday confirmed that the company has signed Kevin Ferguson (commonly known as Kimbo Slice) to a long-term contract. Exact details as to the length and terms of the contract were not disclosed.
The signing of Kimbo follows the cancellation of a scheduled bout with David “Tank” Abbott that was supposed to occur on Oct. 18 under the Cage Fury Fighting Championships banner.
Not only that bout; the entire event was cancelled by CFFC president Felix Martinez, who stated, “I could not overcome the loss of a major investor for (the) show who decided to pull out at the last moment.”
That Palace Fighting Championships in Lemoore, Calif., made an attempt to sign Kimbo and Tank to fight on its Oct. 18 event, but Kimbo instead agreed to terms with ProElite.
Though ProElite representatives would not comment, sources close to the situation indicate that Tank has also signed with the promotion and that the two will fight at ProElite’s Nov. 10 EliteXC event in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Commenting on the signing, Gary Shaw, EliteXC’s president of live events, stated, “We have had our eye on Kimbo from day one and have been actively pursing him since. We struck when the time was right, and now we have our man.”
The signing of Kimbo follows the news that ProElite has also signed a contract extension, which adds two years to the current deal of Cesar Gracie fighter Nick Diaz, who will fight KJ Noons for the new EliteXC 160-pound title on the Nov. 10 event.
“Nick is a tremendously talented young fighter,” said Shaw, who made the announcement Thursday. “He is a very humble young man and dedicated athlete with an enormous wealth of talent.’’
