Quick results from WEC 31 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas:
Charlie Valencia def. Ian McCall at 3:19 of the first round with a guillotine choke. But not before throwing a back suplex that should end up on this year’s MMA year-end highlight reel.
Brian Bowles def. Marcos Galvao by TKO at 2:09 of the second round.
Ed Ratcliffe def. Alex Karalexis via ref stoppage at 1:26 of the second round.
Bryan Baker def. Eric Schambari via split decision.
John Alessio put in his usual 15 minutes and beat Todd Moore via unanimous decision.
Doug Marshall retained his light heavyweight title by tapping out Ariel Gandulla with an arbmar at 55 seconds of the first round.
In a controversial finish, Paulo Filho stayed unbeaten and retained his middleweight title by defeating Chael Sonnen by verbal submission at 4:55 of the second round. Sonnen dominated the first round, nearly to the point of a 10-8 round. Sonnen also controlled the second round, but Filho managed to sink in an armbar. Afterwards, Sonnen vehemently claimed he did not submit.
Former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver got a much-needed strong performance when he took out highly-regarded Cub Swanson with a choke in 35 seconds. Pulver stuffed a takedown attempt and then worked into position for the submission.
Urijah Faber made it 12 consecutive victories with a tremendous win over Jeff Curran to retain his WEC featherweight title. Curran had Faber’s back for better than three minutes in the first round, but Faber put on a clinic in ground defense to fend it off. In the second, Faber pushed the pace and landed a standing guillotine, which went to the ground before Curran tapped with less than a minute left in the round.
