‘His style is so hard to prepare for’

It seems the Brazilian Lyoto Machida really is gaining space among the best fighters in his category. Besides the praise heaped on him for his win at UFC 79 over Cameroonian Thierry Sokodjou, the karateka undefeated in MMA has been gaining the respect of many important people in the field. At a press conference after the bout on the 29th, the Brazilian of a Japanese father was already thinking big when asking that his next adversary be a big name in the American scene.
The fighters named were Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell, two MMA stars that could, in the event of a win, clear the way for Lyoto to dispute the title. John Hackleman, Chuck Liddell’s coach, considered one of the best in the world of MMA, doesn’t seem to have fancied the idea too much.
“He’s one of the guys I’d least like to fight. Not for his toughness or anything. It’s just his style is so hard to prepare for. I knew he would beat "The African Assassin" (Sokodjou). He’s so boring, but he’s like the Larry Holmes of MMA. He’ll f----- beat everyone. Machida is a scary guy. He's going to be a hard guy to beat,” said Hackleman to the site Fighthype.

American fight fans are still getting used to applauding Lyoto Machida, his first three wins in the UFC, all by judges’ decision, left fans in doubt as to the Brazilian karateka’s capacity to put on a show. However, the way Machida dominated Rameau Sokodjou at UFC 79 showed the Brazilian has what it takes to figure among the best in the division. Little is said as well of the fighter’s great triumphs.
The first against BJ Penn, at K-1 Heroes, and the second a knockout over the former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin, who in 25 MMA fights lost only to Lyoto and Anderson Silva (twice). To jog the memories of those who witnessed it and open the eyes of those who haven’t, GRACIEMAG.com went to Youtube to retrieve one of Lyoto’s presentations, the combat with Rich Franklin, at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye in 2003. It’s worth checking out:
