ANAHEIM, CALIF. -- Although the public gathering for "Affliction: Banned" has come to a close, the day's work for the debut promotion may not yet be over.
A large public gathering of more than 1,000 people stood in line outside the Honda Center waiting for the doors to open. Once inside they were treated to a procession of MMA stars on stage -- but the afternoon did not go on without challenges.
Starting about 20 minutes behind schedule, world-famous emcee Michael Buffer led the evening's proceedings. Things were a bit slower-paced than most major events, but the crowd on hand did not seem to mind.
There were huge cheers for ex-UFC fighters Vitor Belfort, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett. Affliction partner and business mogul Donald Trump also received a warm welcome from the crowd.
But the evening's loudest cheers were undoubtedly issued to "The Last Emperor" himself, Fedor Emelianenko. His opponent, Tim Sylvia, was met met with an equally loud address, though split quite noticeably between positive and negative chants.
Emelianenko's brother, Aleksander, did not have nearly as desirable of an evening. Moments before Aleksander was scheduled to take to the scales, California State Athletic Commission officials pulled him from the lineup after declaring he didn't meet licensing requirements.
Aleksander was replaced by veteran Gary Goodridge, who will take on Paul Buentello.
