Sengoku The World Road to Victory 24-08-2008 Tokyo Japan

The return of Valentijn Overeem

Alistair Overeem has found a new home in the heavyweight division, conquering the Strikeforce heavyweight title and winning a Ko victory (Dream 4) over Korean fighter Tae Hyun Lee Within 30 seconds in the first round , Alistair also finished mark Hunt with an arm bar within 40 seconds in round 1 (Dream 5). Would Mirko Cro Cop be next in Dream 6 ?

Alistair’s brother Valentijn is the only fighter in the world who can say he submitted Randy Couture, he also won against Renato “Babalu” Sobral, when Valentijn fought at Rings in Japan.

Then Valentijn sank into a rut , as he continued fighting in Pride , he was not successful, he had to deal with a different style of fighting and problems on the home front made for difficult times.

Valentijn now age 32 returned to the fight game by winning an 8 men tournament in Croatia. As fellow Golden Glory fighter Siyar made his debut at WVR in Japan, Valentijn was asked to fight in Sengoku 4.

Valentijn looked in great shape and when manager Bas Boon was asked what nick name or speciality Valentijn had, the answer was simple; The Phython. I explained that we could not bring a python snake on board the plane and that we would have plenty of problems explaining to the Japanese customs what he was doing carrying a massive snake on the plane. A real snake would cause some upset we believed and we had enough problems with Valentijn’s brother Alistair, bringing a massive hammer on the plane, through immigration. So the Sengoku organization made a nice prop for Valentijn to make his entrance with a snake around a wooden stick (see photo) and the atmosphere was set, Valentijn made his come back in Japan!
When entering the ring Valentijn looked concentrated, this was a big moment for the fighter from Golden Glory, who did not fight in a long time on Japanese soil.
The fight starts and the Japanese fighter takes Valentijn down, on the ground the Japanese fighter tries to take control but after about 2 minutes in to the first round Valentijn gets underneath his Japanese opponent and gets back to his feet. A flurry of punches back and forward and then another take down attempt by the Japanese fighter is answered with a huge flying knee from Valentijn. Winner by Ko in round 1 after 2.45 sec Valentijn Overeem.

An impressive opening fight of the night in the Saitama Super arena!

Flauw hoor.
